USD 2,748.99 is the listed reseller price of a Raritan PX3-5660U, a three-phase 8.6 kVA rack power distribution unit (PDU) that switches and meters each outlet to plus or minus 1% billing-grade accuracy, and that single price explains much of this market. Intelligent PDUs are rack power strips with a network card that meter, monitor or switch power at the inlet or at each outlet; the Intelligent PDU market covers metered, outlet-metered, switched and switched outlet-metered units sold to data centres, telecom rooms and edge sites, and it excludes unmanaged basic strips. Douglas Insights sizes 2025 revenue at USD 2.79 billion, from 2.081 million units at an average realised USD 1,342 each. By 2035 revenue reaches USD 5.98 billion, a 7.92% annual rate. Vertiv pushed its PowerIT rack PDU line to ratings of up to 57.6 kW on 2 September 2025 for racks it says increasingly run above 25 kW (Vertiv release). Related studies sit on our Data Centre Infrastructure hub, and every figure here follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.
How much does an intelligent PDU cost per rack feed in 2025?
An intelligent PDU costs USD 1,342 per rack feed on average in 2025, by our blended estimate. Listed prices run from about USD 1,039 for a 5 kW metered strip to USD 5,223 for a 17.3 kVA switched unit, because phase count, outlet metering and switching each add cost.
| Intelligent PDU class | Example read in this study | Listed price, USD | Typical realised band, USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metered inlet, single-phase, 0U | APC AP8841, 5 kW, 36 C13 and 6 C19 outlets | 1,038.99 sale, 1,510.00 regular | 650 to 1,100 |
| Switched outlet-metered, 1U, 120 V | CyberPower PDU81001, 1,800 W, 8 outlets | 1,200 list | 950 to 1,300 |
| Switched outlet-metered, three-phase, 8.6 kVA | Raritan PX3-5660U, 30 outlets | 2,748.99 | 2,100 to 2,800 |
| Switched outlet-metered, three-phase, 17.3 kVA | Raritan PX3-5765V-E2V2, 48 locking C13 outlets | 5,223.27 | 3,900 to 5,300 |
Intelligent PDU list prices are not what hyperscale buyers pay. Douglas Insights estimates that orders above 1,000 units clear 18% to 30% below reseller list, which is why the blended realised average of USD 1,342 sits closer to the metered band than to the three-phase switched band. The price leg rises 1.38% a year to about USD 1,539 per unit in 2035. Mix does the work: three-phase units for racks above 25 kW carry two to five times the price of a single-phase strip, while like-for-like prices drift down by roughly 1% a year. CyberPower lists a sister model, the PDU81001G, at USD 1,700 list price, a USD 500 premium over the base unit for the same 8-outlet frame.
Which rack power strips fall inside the intelligent PDU count?
Four classes of rack power strip fall inside the intelligent PDU count, together 2.081 million units in 2025: metered inlet, outlet-metered, switched and switched outlet-metered designs. The common test is a network interface that reports load, so passive basic strips and floor-standing power distribution cabinets stay outside the scope.
Metered inlet PDUs show total current on a local display and over the network. Outlet-metered PDUs measure each receptacle, which lets a colocation operator bill a tenant by kilowatt-hour. Switched PDUs add remote on and off control per outlet for reboots and load shedding. Switched outlet-metered PDUs combine both and dominate new AI racks. The count also splits by phase: three-phase units carry 61.2% of 2025 intelligent PDU value and single-phase units 38.8%, a split that tilts further to three-phase as rack power climbs.
Which intelligent PDU type makes the money, metered or switched?
Metered inlet PDUs make the most money today, with 31.7% of 2025 intelligent PDU revenue, or USD 885.3 million. Switched outlet-metered PDUs follow at 25.3% and grow fastest, at 11.17% a year, because AI racks need per-outlet data and remote control in one chassis.
| Intelligent PDU type | Share of 2025 revenue | 2025 value | Annual growth 2026 to 2035 | 2035 value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metered inlet PDUs | 31.7% | USD 885.3 million | 4.86% | USD 1.42 billion |
| Outlet-metered PDUs | 22.4% | USD 625.6 million | 7.93% | USD 1.34 billion |
| Switched PDUs | 20.6% | USD 575.3 million | 7.08% | USD 1.14 billion |
| Switched outlet-metered PDUs | 25.3% | USD 706.6 million | 11.17% | USD 2.04 billion |
Metered inlet PDUs, worth USD 885.3 million, lead because enterprise rooms and older colocation halls still buy the cheapest strip that tells them whether a circuit is near its breaker limit; their growth of 4.86% takes them to USD 1.42 billion by 2035. Outlet-metered PDUs hold USD 625.6 million and rise 7.93% a year, carried by colocation tenants who want per-server billing data. Switched PDUs bring in USD 575.3 million and grow 7.08%, mostly in telecom rooms and remote edge sites where a technician visit to power-cycle a frozen router costs more than the switching premium. Switched outlet-metered PDUs, at USD 706.6 million today, more than double to USD 2.04 billion by 2035, the largest 2035 segment.
The switched outlet-metered intelligent PDU is the fastest segment for a plain reason: a 50 kW rack of accelerator servers is too costly to run blind, and operators want to shed load outlet by outlet when a feed fails. Douglas Insights projects its share rising from 25.3% to about 34.0% of revenue by 2035.
Why are AI racks above 25 kW pulling intelligent PDU demand forward?
Intelligent PDU unit demand grows 6.45% a year to 2035 because AI racks above 25 kW, retrofits of basic strips, energy reporting rules and edge rooms all add units. Those four drivers contribute 3.42, 1.37, 0.96 and 0.70 percentage points, summing exactly to the volume leg.
AI capacity: 3.42 points
New data centre capacity adds 3.42 points to intelligent PDU volume, 53% of unit growth. The International Energy Agency (IEA) puts data centre electricity use at 415 TWh in 2024, about 1.5% of world consumption, and expects around 945 TWh by 2030 after growth of about 12% a year since 2017 (IEA Energy and AI). Each extra rack needs two intelligent PDUs, one per A and B feed. Vertiv, whose 2 September 2025 PowerIT launch reached 57.6 kW per unit, reported 2025 net sales of USD 10.2 billion, up 27.7%, and a USD 15.0 billion backlog at year end, up 109% (Vertiv fourth quarter 2025 results). That backlog is rack power and cooling waiting to be installed.
Retrofits of basic strips: 1.37 points
Replacement of unmanaged strips adds 1.37 points. Douglas Insights counts 12.1 million rack PDUs installed worldwide, and with a 9-year life about 1.35 million reach end of service each year. Only 52% of those replacements are intelligent today; every 5 points of conversion adds roughly 67,500 intelligent PDU units a year. Operators convert when they move a hall from 5 kW to 15 kW racks, because a basic strip gives no warning before a breaker trips.
Energy reporting and edge rooms: 1.66 points
Energy reporting adds 0.96 points. The US Department of Energy found that data centres used about 176 TWh in 2023, 4.4% of US electricity, and could reach 6.7% to 12% by 2028, in a report released on 20 December 2024 (US Department of Energy). Utilities and regulators now ask where that power goes, and outlet metering in an intelligent PDU is the cheapest place to measure IT load. Edge and telecom rooms add the last 0.70 points: switched PDUs let a network operator reboot a remote cabinet without a truck roll, and a single avoided visit often pays for the USD 500 switching premium. Douglas Insights expects edge and telecom sites to hold their 13.7% share through 2035. Together the four drivers lift annual shipments from 2.081 million to about 3.89 million intelligent PDUs by 2035.
What limits intelligent PDU growth when busways and power shelves feed the rack?
Three restraints remove about 1.77 points from intelligent PDU growth: busway and power shelf designs that bypass the strip remove 0.81, grid connection delays 0.58 and price pressure on commodity metered units 0.38. Without them, revenue would compound near 9.7% a year rather than 7.92%.
Power shelves and overhead busways remove 0.81 points of volume. Open Compute Project (OCP) racks feed servers from a direct current (DC) busbar inside the rack, so a hyperscale hall built that way buys fewer outlet strips per rack, even if it still buys metering elsewhere. Douglas Insights estimates about 14% of 2025 hyperscale racks avoid a conventional intelligent PDU.
Grid connection delays remove 0.58 points. Projects in northern Virginia, Dublin and Frankfurt wait years for utility capacity, which pushes intelligent PDU orders to later years rather than cancelling them. Price pressure removes 0.38 points from the value leg: Asian contract makers quote metered inlet strips at well under USD 700, which holds down the USD 1,342 average even as three-phase mix rises.
Which vendors win hyperscale intelligent PDU contracts, and on what basis?
Schneider Electric, Vertiv and Legrand win most hyperscale intelligent PDU contracts, and Douglas Insights estimates the top three hold 48.3% of 2025 revenue. Their positions rest on global service networks, three-phase high-density designs and long-standing frame agreements with colocation operators.
| Company | Estimated share of 2025 intelligent PDU revenue | Position built on |
|---|---|---|
| Schneider Electric (APC) | 17.8% | NetShelter metered and switched rack PDUs sold with its racks and uninterruptible power supplies |
| Vertiv | 15.6% | Geist and PowerIT lines up to 57.6 kW with UL 2900-1 certification |
| Legrand | 14.9% | Raritan and Server Technology intelligent PDUs, plus 2026 acquisitions |
| Eaton | 9.7% | G4 rack PDU in 30 models and the Tripp Lite channel |
| CyberPower Systems | 4.6% | Low-cost switched metered-by-outlet units for closets |
| Delta Electronics | 3.8% | InfraSuite basic and metered rack PDUs sold with its cabinets |
Schneider Electric leads with an estimated 17.8% share; its APC NetShelter switched PDUs offer outlet-level power cycling and sequencing, and they ship inside the same orders as its racks and uninterruptible power supplies. Vertiv, at 15.6%, gained ground with high-density three-phase units and its 2 September 2025 extension of PowerIT to 57.6 kW, offered as basic, monitored and switched models across North America and Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Legrand holds 14.9% through Raritan and Server Technology. Datacenter offerings reached EUR 2.4 billion, or 26% of Legrand group sales, at the end of 2025, and on 1 April 2026 it announced the purchase of TES, a UK power distribution specialist with close to EUR 85 million of revenue, over half from datacenters (Legrand acquisitions release). Eaton, at 9.7%, sells the G4 rack PDU in 30 models, metered and managed through its Brightlayer software. CyberPower, at 4.6%, lists a 1U switched outlet-metered unit at USD 1,200, and Delta Electronics, at 3.8%, sells InfraSuite metered strips with optional network cards. The other 33.6% belongs to Chinese, Taiwanese and regional brands.
Where are intelligent PDU shipments growing fastest by region?
Asia Pacific grows fastest, at 9.21% a year, while North America leads intelligent PDU revenue with USD 1.10 billion in 2025, 39.4% of the total. Hyperscale and AI campus builds in the United States set the North American lead; Japanese, Indian, Malaysian and Australian builds drive Asia Pacific.
North America rises at 8.06% to USD 2.39 billion by 2035, on the back of the largest AI rack fleet. Asia Pacific, worth USD 790.3 million now, reaches USD 1.91 billion as Johor, Mumbai and Tokyo campuses add three-phase intelligent PDU racks. Europe holds USD 673.0 million and grows 6.38%, slowed by grid queues but supported by the EU energy reporting scheme. Latin America adds USD 106.1 million at 6.92%, led by Brazilian and Mexican colocation. The Middle East and Africa, at USD 123.0 million and 6.54% a year, is the wildcard: a handful of Gulf AI campuses could lift intelligent PDU demand there far faster than our base case.
Which rules on data centre energy reporting and UL 2900-1 cybersecurity shape intelligent PDU specs?
Two rules shape intelligent PDU specs most: the EU data centre rating scheme, Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1364, and the UL 2900-1 cybersecurity standard. The first makes energy data a reporting duty in 27 member states; the second governs the network card that collects it.
The Commission adopted Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1364 on 14 March 2024 to set up the first phase of a common Union rating scheme for data centres, and it entered into force on 6 June 2024 (EUR-Lex). Operators that must report energy performance need measured IT energy, and an outlet-metered intelligent PDU supplies it without extra meters. On security, Vertiv states that its monitored PowerIT units carry UL 2900-1 certification and a Secure Boot hardware trust anchor. Accuracy is a third test: Raritan lists IEC 62053-21 for plus or minus 1% billing-grade metering, and CyberPower lists UL 62368 product safety for its PDU81001.
How do hyperscale, colocation and edge buyers split intelligent PDU spending?
Hyperscale and colocation data centres take 58.4% of 2025 intelligent PDU spending, enterprise data centres 27.9% and telecom and edge sites 13.7%, by Douglas Insights estimate. Scale, rack power and tenant billing explain the order: big halls buy three-phase units in bulk, and colocation landlords resell metered power.
Hyperscale and colocation data centres buy three-phase switched outlet-metered units by the thousand, and colocation operators bill tenants from the outlet data. Enterprise data centres still favour single-phase metered inlet strips, renewed on a 9-year cycle. Telecom and edge sites buy smaller switched PDUs because remote reboot saves a site visit. The colocation share keeps rising: power-hungry AI tenants lease capacity rather than build it, and they contract for metered power. For racks that move to cold plates, the Data Centre Liquid Cooling Market report tracks the cooling side of the same rack.
How fast does the installed base of rack PDUs turn over?
About 1.35 million of the 12.1 million installed rack PDUs reach end of service each year on a 9-year life, Douglas Insights calculates. Roughly 0.70 million of those replacements are intelligent PDUs, so refresh supplies about a third of 2025 unit demand.
New racks supply the larger part: about 1.46 million rack PDUs go into new capacity in 2025, and 82% of those are intelligent, or 1.20 million units. Edge cabinets and network closets outside the counted halls add 0.18 million intelligent PDUs. Refresh cycles also follow the rack enclosure: when a hall moves to hot or cold aisle containment, covered in our Modular Data Centre Containment Systems Market report, the strips are often changed with it. Breaker coordination matters too; upstream, the switches in our Power Frame Type Automatic Transfer Switches Market report decide which feed a rack PDU sees during an outage.
What could change the 2035 intelligent PDU forecast?
AI build pace and power shelf adoption could change the 2035 intelligent PDU forecast most. Our base case lands at USD 5.98 billion; a slower path ends near USD 4.52 billion and a faster one near USD 6.87 billion, with volume and price legs set out below.
The base case uses 6.45% volume and 1.38% price growth. The slower case, 4.3% and 0.6%, assumes grid queues stretch and OCP power shelves win most hyperscale racks, giving 4.93% a year. The faster case, 7.6% and 1.7%, assumes AI campus construction keeps the pace of Vertiv’s USD 15.0 billion year-end backlog and three-phase mix rises quickly, giving 9.43% a year. One extra point of annual unit growth lifts 2035 revenue by about USD 586.5 million. Published forecasts for intelligent PDUs run from 6.8% to 8.7% a year; our 7.92% sits in the upper half because the 2 September 2025 move to 57.6 kW units shows value per rack rising (Vertiv).
Douglas Exclusive: the Rack PDU Power-per-Dollar Tracker
The Rack PDU Power-per-Dollar Tracker is a Douglas Insights model built from 9 sourced inputs: four listed prices, four power ratings and Vertiv’s 57.6 kW ceiling. It tracks what a buyer pays per kilowatt of rated intelligent PDU capacity, class by class.
| Intelligent PDU read | Rating | Listed price, USD | USD per kW or kVA |
|---|---|---|---|
| CyberPower PDU81001, switched outlet-metered, 1U | 1.8 kW | 1,200.00 | 666.67 |
| Raritan PX3-5660U, switched outlet-metered, three-phase | 8.6 kVA | 2,748.99 | 319.65 |
| Raritan PX3-5765V-E2V2, switched outlet-metered, three-phase | 17.3 kVA | 5,223.27 | 301.92 |
| APC AP8841, metered inlet, single-phase | 5 kW | 1,038.99 | 207.80 |
The finding: price per kilowatt falls from USD 666.67 on a 1.8 kW strip to about USD 302 on a 17.3 kVA unit, so intelligent PDU value grows much more slowly than rack power. A 57.6 kW rack at the 17.3 kVA unit rate implies about USD 17,400 of PDU capacity if bought at list, yet buyers fit two large units, not ten small ones. That gap is why our price leg is 1.38%, not the 10% or more that rack power growth alone would suggest. The tracker will be refreshed with each new list price we read.
How the model turns 6.07 million racks into an intelligent PDU estimate?
The model starts from 415 TWh of data centre electricity and ends at 6.07 million racks. Dividing by 8,760 hours gives 47.4 GW of facility load; a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.56 leaves 30.4 GW of IT load, and 5 kW per rack gives the rack count.
Two PDUs per rack give 12.1 million installed units. New racks at 12% growth need 1.46 million PDUs, 82% intelligent, or 1.20 million; refresh gives 1.35 million, 52% intelligent, or 0.70 million; edge adds 0.18 million. The total, 2.081 million units, times USD 1,342 equals USD 2.79 billion. Inputs cover 5 regions and 9 sourced data points. Cross-check one: five published 2025 to 2026 estimates span about USD 2.2 billion to USD 3.26 billion, and ours sits inside. Cross-check two: segment 2035 values sum to USD 5.94 billion, 0.7% under the USD 5.98 billion total. Regions reconcile to the global row to USD 0.1 million in both years.
What should a colocation buyer ask before ordering intelligent PDUs for 2026 builds?
A colocation buyer should ask for three-phase intelligent PDUs rated at least 2.5 times today’s average rack draw, outlet metering at plus or minus 1% and a certified network card. Those three asks cover a 9-year life in which rack power keeps rising.
Douglas Insights reckons a 30% headroom rule saves one forklift replacement per rack across that life. Buyers should also lock frame pricing: list prices of USD 2,748.99 to USD 5,223.27 for three-phase switched units leave room for discounts of 18% or more on volume. Finally, ask how the intelligent PDU reports to building software, since EU energy data now flows from it.
