H.B. Fuller agreed on 25 June 2026 to buy Advanced Medical Solutions (AMS), the maker of LiquiBand skin adhesive, for 285 pence a share, an enterprise value of about GBP 715 million, lifting its medical adhesives revenue from about USD 68 million to about USD 370 million, its announcement filed with the SEC shows. The medical adhesives and sealants market covers the adhesives and sealants that touch skin, tissue or medical devices: skin-contact adhesives for tapes, dressings, ostomy products and wearable sensors; device assembly adhesives for catheters, needles and tubing; topical tissue adhesives such as cyanoacrylates; fibrin and other biologic sealants; and synthetic surgical sealants. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 9.20 billion in 2025, about 4.00 billion uses at an average USD 2.30, rising to USD 9.80 billion in 2026 and USD 17.23 billion in 2035, a 6.48% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits beside our Advanced Medical Dressings Market, Medical Adhesive Transfer Tapes Market and Medical Adhesion Barrier Market reports, and every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.
Which medical adhesive or sealant earns the most: skin-contact adhesives, fibrin sealants or cyanoacrylates?
Skin-contact adhesives earn the most, 44.0% of 2025 value or about USD 4.05 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Synthetic surgical sealants grow fastest, at 8.4% a year to USD 2.47 billion by 2035.
| Product | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2025-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skin-contact adhesives (acrylic, silicone, hydrocolloid, polyurethane) | 44.0% | USD 4.05 billion | 6.4% | USD 7.53 billion |
| Device assembly adhesives (light-cure, cyanoacrylate, epoxy) | 18.0% | USD 1.66 billion | 7.4% | USD 3.38 billion |
| Topical tissue adhesives (cyanoacrylate skin closure) | 9.0% | USD 828 million | 6.8% | USD 1.60 billion |
| Fibrin and other biologic sealants | 17.0% | USD 1.56 billion | 4.9% | USD 2.52 billion |
| Synthetic and semi-synthetic surgical sealants (PEG, albumin-glutaraldehyde, light-activated) | 12.0% | USD 1.10 billion | 8.4% | USD 2.47 billion |
Skin-contact adhesives lead because they sit under almost every tape, island dressing, ostomy flange, electrode and wearable sensor, a high-volume, low-cost layer used billions of times a year. Solventum, the former 3M health care business, sold USD 1.88 billion of advanced wound care products in 2025 and USD 528 million in the third quarter of 2026, up 8.9%, its results of 5 November 2026 show; Douglas Insights counts only the adhesive layer in such products. Their value grows 6.4% a year to USD 7.53 billion by 2035.
Device assembly adhesives, USD 1.66 billion, bond needles to hubs and tubing to catheters and are cured by ultraviolet or visible light in seconds. Topical tissue adhesives, USD 828 million, close skin wounds without sutures; AMS sold GBP 47.8 million of LiquiBand in 2025, up 10%, its preliminary results of 18 March 2026 show. Fibrin sealants, USD 1.56 billion, and synthetic sealants, USD 1.10 billion, stop leaks of blood, air and fluid in surgery. Product values for 2035 sum to USD 17.50 billion, 1.6% above the headline.
How does demand split between hospitals, device makers and home care?
Medical device and wound care manufacturers buy about 62% of 2025 value as formulated adhesives, roughly USD 5.70 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Operating rooms buy about 38% as finished tissue adhesives and surgical sealants.
Device makers buy skin-contact and assembly adhesives in drums, rolls and coated films from specialists such as Henkel, H.B. Fuller and Avery Dennison, or make them in-house. H.B. Fuller said the medical adhesives makers GEM and Medifill, which it bought for EUR 191.9 million, about USD 197.0 million, grew revenue 15% in 2025 against their 2024 level before the deal, its fourth-quarter 2025 presentation of 15 January 2026 shows.
Hospitals and ambulatory surgery centres buy topical adhesives, fibrin sealants and synthetic sealants as sterile finished devices or biologics, often through group purchasing contracts. Home care, where patients wear sensors, ostomy products and dressings, is served through the device makers’ channels and is counted in the first group. Douglas Insights estimates the device maker share rises to about 64% by 2035 as wearable sensors and drug-delivery patches multiply.
The two buyer groups behave differently. Device makers qualify an adhesive once, often over 12 to 24 months of skin and biocompatibility testing, and then reorder it for the life of the product, so supplier switching is rare and volumes follow the device’s sales. Operating rooms choose sealants case by case, guided by surgeon preference, hospital formularies and price, so share moves faster between brands, a Douglas Insights estimate.
What drives medical adhesives and sealants sales: surgery volumes, wearables or new approvals?
Revenue rises 6.48% a year in our base case: uses add 4.80% and price per use 1.60%. Four drivers add 6.20 gross points to unit growth before 1.40 points of restraints, Douglas Insights estimates.
Surgery volumes and sutureless closure: 1.70 points
Surgery is the largest driver because every operation ends with closure and many need a sealant. Baxter’s Advanced Surgery sales, which include Floseal, Tisseel and Coseal, rose 12% to USD 342 million in the third quarter of 2026 and 12% to USD 977 million in the first nine months, its results of 29 October 2026 show. AMS’s US LiquiBand sales rose 13% at constant currency to GBP 29.4 million in 2025 as LiquiBand XL gained traction, its results state. Douglas Insights estimates surgery and sutureless closure add 1.70 points a year to uses.
Wearables and advanced wound care: 1.60 points
Skin-worn devices add 1.60 points. H.B. Fuller put the medical adhesives market at about USD 6 billion growing about 8% a year when it agreed the AMS deal, its announcement states, and Solventum’s advanced wound care sales rose 8.9% in the third quarter of 2026. Continuous glucose monitors, cardiac patches and on-body injectors stay on the skin for 7 to 15 days, and each needs a breathable, skin-friendly adhesive with a medical-grade release liner, a Douglas Insights estimate.
New chemistries and FDA decisions: 1.40 points
New products add 1.40 points. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted TISSIUM a De Novo for COAPTIUM CONNECT, a light-activated polymer for sutureless peripheral nerve repair, on 17 June 2025, under number DEN240066; it approved Pramand’s SpineSeal dural sealant under PMA P240027 on 14 February 2025; and it cleared Resivant’s CUTIVA 2-octyl cyanoacrylate skin adhesive under 510(k) K250950 on 4 August 2025, the FDA database record shows.
Consolidation into specialist makers: 1.50 points
Consolidation adds the last 1.50 points, a Douglas Insights estimate, as adhesive makers buy closure and sealant brands and invest in medical capacity. AMS shareholders approved H.B. Fuller’s offer on 12 August 2026, with completion expected by the end of 2026, Fuller’s 10-Q for the quarter to 29 August 2026 states. Summed, 1.70 + 1.60 + 1.40 + 1.50 = 6.20 points; after 1.40 points of restraints the unit leg is 4.80%, and 1.048 x 1.016 gives the 6.48% revenue rate.
What holds back medical adhesives and sealants: hospital cost cuts, destocking or EU recertification?
Three restraints remove 1.40 points a year from unit growth: hospital cost control and portfolio pruning take 0.50 points, distributor destocking 0.50 points and European recertification 0.40 points, Douglas Insights estimates.
Cost control is the heaviest brake. Johnson & Johnson MedTech told US customers on 12 February 2026 that it would discontinue selected sutures, skin staplers and SURGIFOAM items, with final sales on 30 September 2026, while prioritising advanced wound closure and adjunctive hemostats, its customer letter states. Hospitals that standardise on fewer products buy cheaper sealants for routine cases, a Douglas Insights estimate. Value analysis committees in US hospitals now ask for evidence that a sealant shortens operating time or length of stay before adding it to a formulary, and in Europe national tenders award most skin adhesive volume to the lowest compliant bid. Douglas Insights estimates these rules trim about 0.50 points a year from use growth, mostly in routine general surgery rather than in cardiac, spinal and neurosurgery, where leaks are costly.
Destocking takes 0.50 points. Solventum’s sales fell 2.8% organically to USD 1.95 billion in the third quarter of 2026, which it put down to the reversal of orders pulled into the second quarter around its systems change, its results show, and Artivion’s surgical sealants sales were flat at USD 18.9 million in that quarter, its release of 5 November 2026 shows. Recertification takes 0.40 points, as makers move sealant and adhesive files to new certificates under the EU Medical Device Regulation and some smaller lines are withdrawn rather than re-approved.
Which region buys the most medical adhesives and sealants: North America, Europe or Asia Pacific?
North America buys the most medical adhesives and sealants, about USD 3.68 billion or 40.0% of 2025 value, Douglas Insights estimates. Asia Pacific grows fastest, at 8.0% a year to USD 4.77 billion by 2035.
| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2025-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| North America | USD 3.68 billion | 40.0% | USD 3.90 billion | 6.0% | USD 6.59 billion |
| Europe | USD 2.58 billion | 28.0% | USD 2.72 billion | 5.6% | USD 4.44 billion |
| Asia Pacific | USD 2.21 billion | 24.0% | USD 2.38 billion | 8.0% | USD 4.77 billion |
| Latin America | USD 460 million | 5.0% | USD 491 million | 6.8% | USD 888 million |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 276 million | 3.0% | USD 295 million | 7.0% | USD 543 million |
North America leads because it pays the highest prices for surgical sealants, uses sutureless closure widely in emergency and outpatient care, and is the largest market for wearable sensors. Artivion, whose sealant is used in aortic and cardiac surgery, grew 2025 revenue 14% to USD 441.3 million, its release of 12 February 2026 shows. North American value grows 6.0% a year to USD 6.59 billion.
Europe, USD 2.58 billion, grows 5.6% a year to USD 4.44 billion, held back by tight hospital budgets and recertification. Henkel, the largest adhesive maker, sold EUR 10.67 billion through its Adhesive Technologies business in 2025, up 1.5% organically, at a 16.7% adjusted operating margin, its results of 11 March 2026 show. Asia Pacific, USD 2.21 billion, grows 8.0% as Chinese and Indian device makers expand. Latin America and the Middle East and Africa grow 6.8% and 7.0%. Regional values sum to USD 17.23 billion in 2035, matching the headline.
Which companies lead medical adhesives and sealants, and how fragmented is the field?
Baxter leads medical adhesives and sealants with about 9.0% of 2025 value, a Douglas Insights estimate, ahead of Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon at 8.0% and Solventum at 7.0%. The top seven hold about 30%.
| Company | Base and products | Latest filed or announced figure | Estimated share 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baxter | Deerfield, United States; Tisseel, Floseal, Coseal | Advanced Surgery USD 342 million, Q3 2026 | 9.0% |
| Johnson & Johnson (Ethicon) | New Brunswick, United States; Dermabond, Evicel | US surgery portfolio letter, 12 February 2026 | 8.0% |
| Solventum | Maplewood, United States; medical tapes, dressings, adhesive films | Advanced Wound Care USD 528 million, Q3 2026 | 7.0% |
| Henkel | Düsseldorf, Germany; Loctite medical device adhesives | Adhesive Technologies EUR 10.67 billion, 2025 | 4.0% |
| Advanced Medical Solutions | Winsford, United Kingdom; LiquiBand, surgical sealants | LiquiBand GBP 47.8 million, 2025 | 0.8% |
| Artivion | Kennesaw, United States; aortic surgical sealant | Surgical sealants USD 76.6 million, 2025 | 0.8% |
| H.B. Fuller | St. Paul, United States; GEM, Medifill medical adhesives | Medical adhesives about USD 68 million, before AMS | 0.7% |
Baxter’s lead rests on biologic and synthetic sealants sold to operating rooms worldwide, and its Advanced Surgery line grew 11% organically in the first nine months of 2026. Artivion’s surgical sealants line sold USD 76.6 million in 2025, up 4%, but only USD 57.0 million in the first nine months of 2026 against USD 56.3 million a year earlier, its third-quarter release shows, while its 2026 revenue guidance was narrowed to USD 484 million to USD 492 million.
The field is fragmented. AMS grew 2025 revenue 29% to GBP 228.9 million, with surgical sales of GBP 183.5 million, its results show, and once H.B. Fuller completes the purchase, the combined business would rank among the top five, a Douglas Insights estimate. Avery Dennison, Dow, Elkem, Chemence, Integra, Corza Medical and many Asian makers share the rest; our shares count only adhesive and sealant value, not sutures, staplers, hemostatic powders or dressings as a whole.
How are medical adhesives and sealants priced, from a tape layer to a sealant kit?
Medical adhesives and sealants sell for an average USD 2.30 per use in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from cents in a tape to hundreds of dollars for a sealant kit, reaching about USD 2.70 by 2035.
Topical adhesives show the spread. The NHS Dictionary of Medicines and Devices lists Dermabond Advanced 0.7 millilitre at an indicative price of GBP 19.49, applying since 1 October 2023, its dm+d record shows, against GBP 5.50 for a 0.5 gram LiquiBand Flow Control, its dm+d record shows. That gap of about 3.5 times explains why value-focused brands win in public tenders.
Skin-contact and assembly adhesives are priced per square metre or per kilogram to device makers, at a fraction of a dollar per finished product, while biologic sealants carry a premium for human plasma proteins. Our 1.60% price leg blends a mix shift toward synthetic sealants and long-wear wearable adhesives with tender pressure in Europe and Asia.
Silicone adhesives, which peel off fragile skin with less trauma, cost several times more per square metre than acrylics, a Douglas Insights estimate, and their share of skin-contact value rises as wear times lengthen and older patients use more devices. Light-activated and synthetic sealants carry the highest prices per use because each kit is sterile, single-use and backed by clinical data, and every new approval in that group raises the average.
What if surgery slows or wearables boom: how large is the market in 2035?
The medical adhesives and sealants market ends 2035 between USD 12.87 billion and USD 21.70 billion across three cases, around a USD 17.23 billion base. Surgery volumes and wearable sensor adoption set most of the spread.
| Case | Unit leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slower | 3.00% | 0.40% | 3.41% | USD 12.87 billion |
| Base case | 4.80% | 1.60% | 6.48% | USD 17.23 billion |
| Faster | 6.20% | 2.60% | 8.96% | USD 21.70 billion |
In the slower case hospital budgets tighten, recertification removes more products and generic cyanoacrylates and sealants cut prices, removing 1.80 points from uses and 1.20 points from price. In the faster case wearable sensors spread beyond diabetes, light-activated and synthetic sealants replace sutures in more procedures and Asian surgery grows quickly, adding 1.40 points to uses and 1.00 point to price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 1.60 billion to 2035 value, Douglas Insights estimates.
Live signals sit near the base case. Baxter’s Advanced Surgery sales grew 12% in 2026 and AMS’s US LiquiBand sales grew 13% in 2025, but Solventum and Artivion reported flat or falling quarters in the autumn of 2026.
Which rules shape medical adhesives and sealants, from FDA classification to the EU MDR?
Three sets of rules shape medical adhesives and sealants: FDA classification, which puts topical tissue adhesives in class II and most internal sealants in class III; the EU Medical Device Regulation; and ISO 10993 testing.
In the United States, a tissue adhesive for topical approximation of skin is a class II device under 21 CFR 878.4010, the electronic Code of Federal Regulations shows, so new cyanoacrylates such as CUTIVA reach the market through 510(k) clearance, while internal sealants such as SpineSeal need premarket approval. The De Novo route used by TISSIUM in June 2025 created a new class II category, product code SFD under 21 CFR 882.5270, for light-activated nerve coaptation polymers, the FDA decision summary shows.
In Europe, Regulation (EU) 2023/607 extended the transition to 31 December 2027 for class III and implantable class IIb devices, which include most internal sealants, and to 31 December 2028 for other class IIb, IIa and I devices, and removed the sell-off date, the EUR-Lex text shows. Biocompatibility is tested to the ISO 10993 series, whose part 1 was revised as ISO 10993-1:2025 in November 2025, a standards record shows, which adhesive makers must reflect in their skin-contact files.
Douglas Exclusive: the Sutureless Closure Ledger
The Sutureless Closure Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 inputs: 8 company filings and releases, 3 FDA records and 1 NHS price record. It estimates how many skin closures adhesives perform.
| Date | Input | What it moves |
|---|---|---|
| 1 October 2023 | NHS dm+d: Dermabond Advanced GBP 19.49 | Price per use |
| 14 February 2025 | FDA: SpineSeal PMA P240027 | Internal sealants |
| 17 June 2025 | FDA: COAPTIUM CONNECT De Novo | New chemistries |
| 4 August 2025 | FDA: CUTIVA 510(k) K250950 | Topical adhesives |
| 15 January 2026 | H.B. Fuller: GEM and Medifill up 15% | Formulated adhesives |
| 12 February 2026 | Artivion 2025 sealants USD 76.6 million | Surgical sealants |
| 12 February 2026 | J&J US surgery portfolio letter | Hospital mix |
| 11 March 2026 | Henkel Adhesive Technologies EUR 10.67 billion | Supplier base |
| 18 March 2026 | AMS: LiquiBand GBP 47.8 million | Topical adhesives |
| 25 June 2026 | H.B. Fuller agrees to buy AMS | Consolidation |
| 29 October 2026 | Baxter Advanced Surgery up 12% | Surgical sealants |
| 5 November 2026 | Solventum Q3 2026 results | Skin-contact adhesives |
The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: at an average realised price of about USD 18 per topical adhesive device worldwide, between the GBP 5.50 LiquiBand and GBP 19.49 Dermabond list points converted at a Douglas Insights assumption of USD 1.32 per pound, the USD 828 million topical segment equals about 46 million skin closures in 2025. AMS’s GBP 47.8 million of LiquiBand, about USD 63 million, equals about 7.6% of that segment, and Fuller’s purchase brings a business with about USD 300 million of total revenue, including sutures and woundcare, into a company whose medical adhesives sales were only about USD 68 million before the deal.
That is why Douglas Insights expects more adhesive chemistry companies to buy finished closure brands: margins on a sterile closure device are far above the 16.7% Henkel earns across adhesives, and the formulation know-how is the same.
How does the methodology turn 4.00 billion uses into USD 9.20 billion?
How this report is built
- Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
- Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
- The next scheduled review of this study is May 2027.
- Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.
Our methodology multiplies about 4.00 billion uses of medical adhesives and sealants by an average USD 2.30 to reach USD 9.20 billion in 2025, then grows uses 4.80% and price 1.60% a year to 2035.
The model covers 5 products, 2 buyer groups and 5 regions, using 74 data points, 24 sourced and 50 modelled. A use is one finished product that carries an adhesive or sealant: one tape roll, dressing, sensor patch or bonded catheter, or one tissue adhesive or sealant kit, all Douglas Insights estimates. Prices for skin-contact and assembly adhesives are the adhesive layer’s share of product cost; prices for tissue adhesives and sealants are the finished device. Arithmetic: 4.00 billion x USD 2.30 = USD 9.20 billion; 2026: USD 9.20 billion x 1.06477 = USD 9.80 billion; 2035: USD 9.20 billion x 1.06477^10 = USD 17.23 billion.
Two cross-checks agree. First, H.B. Fuller’s view of a USD 6 billion medical adhesives market is close to our USD 5.70 billion for skin-contact and assembly adhesives. Second, Baxter’s Advanced Surgery sales of about USD 1.30 billion a year at the 2026 run rate, which include hemostats, are consistent with a 9.0% share of our total once hemostatic matrices are excluded. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our editorial standards explain.
