A Danfoss SZ161 scroll compressor leaves the factory holding 3.6 litres of polyolester (POE) oil, while a Tecumseh R410A rotary carries 250 ml and an Embraco R600a refrigerator compressor only 180 cm3. Refrigeration oil is the lubricant sealed inside those machines, and the refrigeration oil market covers POE, polyvinyl ether (PVE), polyalkylene glycol (PAG), mineral oil and alkylbenzene grades sold as compressor factory fill and as service oil. Douglas Insights puts 2025 sales at USD 1.46 billion, rising to USD 2.27 billion by 2035 at 4.54% a year: 204.08 million litres times a blended USD 7.14 per litre equals USD 1.46 billion. Chemistry is shifting because the US EPA set a 700 global warming potential (GWP) ceiling for new residential and light commercial air conditioning systems installed from 1 January 2025 under its Technology Transitions sector table. The study belongs to our specialty chemicals coverage, and every step of the build follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.
Why are R32 and propane compressor conversions lifting refrigeration oil demand?
Refrigeration oil volume grows 2.87% a year to 2035 because every new compressor needs a factory charge, and the switch to R32, R290 and hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerants forces fresh POE, PVE and PAG formulations. Four drivers add 1.21, 0.74, 0.58 and 0.34 points, which sum to the 2.87-point volume leg in our model.
Room air conditioner and heat pump compressors are the first driver, worth 1.21 points. The International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) summary of JARN data shows the global room air conditioner market grew 4% in 2024 to 140.58 million units, with India up about 35% and Southeast Asia up 13.9%. Each of those units carries a rotary compressor, and a 250 ml POE charge per rotary means 10 million extra rotaries add 2.5 million litres of refrigeration oil. R32 changes the oil as well as the volume: ENEOS says it has developed and launched refrigeration oils compatible with R32, whose GWP is 675 against 1,975 for R410A.
Commercial refrigeration replacement is the second driver, contributing 0.74 points. The EPA restriction table sets an interim 1,400 GWP limit for remote condensing units from 27 July 2026 and for supermarket systems from 1 January 2027, then 150 or 300 GWP from 1 January 2032. Each conversion means a new compressor rack and a new oil chemistry, typically POE for HFO blends or PAG for hydrocarbons. A semi-hermetic reciprocating compressor in such a rack holds roughly 4.0 litres in our model, so 100,000 rack replacements move about 0.4 million litres.
Service top-ups across a growing installed base supply the third driver at 0.58 points. Douglas Insights estimates that service and aftermarket channels sold 65.25 million litres in 2025, 32.0% of total refrigeration oil volume, because leak repairs, compressor change-outs and oil analysis programmes all consume fresh oil. The base keeps widening: the IIR compressor review counted 467.1 million refrigeration compressors sold in 2023 against 418.7 million in 2020, an 11.6% rise in three years.
Automotive air conditioning and electrified vehicles add the last 0.34 points. FUCHS lists mobile air conditioning PAG oils for R134a, R1234yf and CO2 circuits. Because that refrigeration oil sits inside sealed vehicle loops, the leg grows with car output rather than with service visits, which keeps its weight below 0.4 points. In our model automotive air conditioning holds 11.2% of 2025 refrigeration oil value.
Which lubricants sit inside the refrigeration oil scope, and which stay out?
Five refrigeration oil chemistries are in scope, worth USD 1.46 billion together in 2025: POE, PVE, PAG, mineral oil and alkylbenzene. They are sold into room air conditioners, domestic refrigerators, commercial refrigeration, automotive air conditioning and industrial refrigeration. General screw air compressor oils, vacuum pump oils and refrigerants themselves are excluded.
Polyalphaolefin (PAO) grades for ammonia and CO2 plants are counted inside the mineral oil line because volumes are small and price bands overlap. FUCHS lists RENISO grades based on POE, PAO, AB and PAG plus selected mineral oils on its RENISO product page, which shows how wide a single supplier range runs. The model counts litres, not drums, so a 20-litre pail and a 200-litre drum convert at face volume.
Which hurdles slow refrigeration oil volumes in compressor factories?
Three refrigeration oil restraints remove 1.00 point of volume growth a year, pulling an unconstrained 3.87% path down to the 2.87% base. Hermetic sealing removes 0.41 points, the Chinese room air conditioner slowdown 0.33 points and the fading R22 service pool 0.26 points.
Sealed hermetic systems take 0.41 points off. Domestic refrigerators and split air conditioners rarely receive an oil change in their working life, so refrigeration oil sold into those 472.49 million hermetic reciprocating and rotary compressors is a one-time charge. Tecumseh warns that excess oil can damage compressors and that the optimum charge is fixed on the bill of material, which caps any service upsell.
Weak Chinese domestic demand removes 0.33 points. The IIR market note reports that Chinese room air conditioner sales fell 2.3% in 2024 and packaged air conditioner sales fell 3.7%, even as exports grew nearly 30%. China builds most of the world’s rotary compressors, so a soft home market trims refrigeration oil factory fill before exports recover it.
The shrinking R22 pool removes 0.26 points. Mineral oil and alkylbenzene serve HCFC equipment, and every R22 system scrapped retires a service customer for those grades. Douglas Insights expects mineral oil revenue to grow only 1.85% a year, from USD 326.4 million in 2025 to USD 392.1 million in 2035.
Which oil type leads refrigeration oil revenue: POE, PVE or PAG?
POE leads refrigeration oil revenue with a 41.6% share, or USD 606.2 million in 2025, because hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) and HFO compressors in air conditioners, heat pumps and supermarket racks are approved on polyolester. PAG grows fastest at 6.4% a year as propane and R1234yf circuits spread, and mineral oil grows slowest at 1.85%.
| Oil type | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | Growth 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| POE | 41.6% | USD 606.2 million | 5.05% | USD 992.1 million |
| Mineral oil | 22.4% | USD 326.4 million | 1.85% | USD 392.1 million |
| PVE | 14.3% | USD 208.4 million | 5.6% | USD 359.4 million |
| PAG | 12.7% | USD 185.1 million | 6.4% | USD 344.2 million |
| Alkylbenzene | 9.0% | USD 131.1 million | 2.4% | USD 166.2 million |
POE holds USD 606.2 million because Danfoss and Tecumseh datasheets specify polyolester for HFC compressors. Mineral oil keeps USD 326.4 million on the strength of ammonia plants and older R22 equipment. PVE earns USD 208.4 million, which our model places mostly in Japanese-designed inverter air conditioners. PAG brings USD 185.1 million from mobile air conditioning and hydrocarbon systems, and FUCHS offers RENISO LPG grades in VG 68, 100 and 220 for propane and isobutane. Alkylbenzene adds USD 131.1 million as a low-temperature and retrofit blending oil.
PAG is the fastest refrigeration oil segment at 6.4% a year, reaching USD 344.2 million in 2035, because R290 heat pumps and R1234yf car loops need a glycol that tolerates hydrocarbon solubility and polar refrigerants. POE adds the most dollars, USD 385.9 million over the decade.
Is refrigeration oil mostly sold as factory fill or as service and aftermarket volume?
Factory fill takes 68.0% of refrigeration oil litres, 138.83 million in 2025, while service and aftermarket channels take 65.25 million litres. The value split runs the other way, because service oil sells in small packs at roughly 2.5 times the bulk price paid by compressor plants.
By application, room air conditioners and heat pumps absorb 38.7% of refrigeration oil value, commercial refrigeration 20.8%, domestic refrigerators 17.9%, industrial refrigeration 11.4% and automotive air conditioning 11.2%. Domestic refrigerators use many compressors but small charges: 239.76 million hermetic reciprocating units at 180 cm3 each hold just 43.16 million litres. Industrial refrigeration is the reverse, with 31,300 centrifugal chillers carrying about 110 litres apiece in our model.
Where do Asia Pacific compressor plants pull the most refrigeration oil?
Asia Pacific buys 52.6% of refrigeration oil, worth USD 766.4 million in 2025, because China, Thailand, India and Japan assemble most rotary and hermetic reciprocating compressors. Middle East and Africa grows fastest at 6.25% a year, while Latin America is the wildcard.
| Region | 2025 | 2035 | Growth 2026-2035 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asia Pacific | USD 766.4 million | USD 1.24 billion | 4.92% |
| North America | USD 275.4 million | USD 402.2 million | 3.86% |
| Europe | USD 239.0 million | USD 331.0 million | 3.31% |
| Latin America | USD 91.8 million | USD 143.7 million | 4.58% |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 84.5 million | USD 154.9 million | 6.25% |
Asia Pacific rises from USD 766.4 million to USD 1.24 billion at 4.92% a year, led by Chinese and Southeast Asian rotary lines. North America moves from USD 275.4 million to USD 402.2 million at 3.86%, carried by scroll compressors in unitary systems and supermarket refits. Europe grows slowest at 3.31%, from USD 239.0 million to USD 331.0 million, because F-gas rules push hydrocarbon systems with small refrigeration oil charges.
Middle East and Africa climbs from USD 84.5 million to USD 154.9 million at 6.25% a year. The IIR note records a Middle East air conditioning market of 10.85 million units and North African room air conditioner sales up 4.3% in 2024, and hot climates drive frequent compressor replacement. Latin America is the wildcard at USD 91.8 million: Brazil, Mexico and Argentina hold 77% of regional air conditioner sales, so one currency shock moves refrigeration oil imports fast.
Which refrigeration oil suppliers fill the compressor crankcase first?
The top three refrigeration oil suppliers, ENEOS, Idemitsu Kosan and Lubrizol, hold 47.8% of 2025 revenue in Douglas Insights estimates, because compressor approvals lock a grade in for a whole product generation. FUCHS, ExxonMobil and Nu-Calgon follow in service channels.
| Company | Brand or line | Position built on | Estimated share 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| ENEOS | R32-compatible refrigeration oils | R32-compatible oil development | 18.6% |
| Idemitsu Kosan | Daphne Hermetic Oil | Network in 28 countries | 16.3% |
| Lubrizol | Emkarate | Synthetic POE with OEM approvals | 12.9% |
| FUCHS | RENISO | More than 50 years of refrigeration oils | 7.4% |
| ExxonMobil | Mobil EAL Arctic | Eight listed POE grades | 6.8% |
| Nu-Calgon | Emkarate RL packs | US wholesale service channel | 2.7% |
ENEOS leads with an estimated 18.6% share built on refrigeration oils it describes as developed and launched for R32. Idemitsu Kosan follows at 16.3%, with manufacturing, sales and research networks in 28 countries behind its Daphne Hermetic Oil range. Lubrizol holds 12.9% through Emkarate, a synthetic POE line that the company calls OEM-approved and retrofit-ready.
FUCHS takes 7.4% with RENISO, which it has developed and manufactured for more than 50 years across POE, PAO, AB and PAG chemistries. ExxonMobil holds 6.8% through Mobil EAL Arctic, with listed grades from ISO 22 to ISO 220 and flash points from 250 to 285 degrees C. Nu-Calgon, at 2.7%, sells Emkarate RL32-3MAF in gallon packs to US contractors. The 21 May 2026 EPA rule revision, which the EPA fact sheet says saves supermarkets more than USD 800 million, gives these suppliers more time to qualify HFO-ready POE grades.
How much does a litre of POE refrigeration oil cost at the factory and at the counter?
Refrigeration oil averages USD 7.14 per litre in 2025, but compressor plants pay about USD 4.85 per litre in bulk while service buyers pay about USD 12.01. Counter prices run far higher: a US gallon of Emkarate RL32-3MAF lists at USD 129.58, or USD 34.24 per litre.
Mineral oil sits lower. A 20-litre pail of Suniso 3GS lists at EUR 469.79 before VAT at one Italian distributor, or EUR 23.49 per litre, so even the counter price of a mineral refrigeration oil is about a third below POE. Douglas Insights models the blended price rising 1.62% a year to USD 8.38 per litre in 2035, because POE, PVE and PAG take share from cheaper mineral grades.
Douglas Insights calculates that factory fill earns USD 673.3 million in 2025 and the service channel USD 783.8 million, so 53.8% of refrigeration oil revenue comes from 32.0% of the litres.
What if the R290 heat pump wave stalls: refrigeration oil scenarios for 2035?
The base case reaches USD 2.27 billion in 2035 from 2.87% volume and 1.62% price growth, while a slower path ends at USD 1.91 billion and a faster path at USD 2.60 billion. Our 4.54% refrigeration oil CAGR sits inside published forecasts of 4.1% to 4.86% a year.
The slower case uses 1.6% volume and 1.1% price growth, a 2.72% revenue path, and assumes China’s room air conditioner market stays soft and the 21 May 2026 EPA revision, set out in the EPA fact sheet, delays supermarket conversions. The faster case uses 3.9% volume and 2.0% price growth, a 5.98% path, with R290 heat pumps scaling across Europe and India.
Sensitivity is steep. One extra point of annual litre growth adds about USD 230.7 million to the 2035 refrigeration oil value, which is more than the whole 2025 PVE segment.
Which F-gas and AIM Act rules change refrigeration oil chemistry?
Two rule sets decide refrigeration oil chemistry: EU Regulation 2024/573 on fluorinated gases, in force since 11 March 2024, and the US Technology Transitions rule with its 700 GWP limit from 1 January 2025. Both push compressors to R32, R290, CO2 and HFO refrigerants.
The European Parliament and Council adopted Regulation (EU) 2024/573 on 7 February 2024, replacing Regulation 517/2014, and it entered into force on 11 March 2024. Its phase-down favours hydrocarbon and CO2 systems, which use PAG, PAO and special POE grades rather than standard HFC esters.
In the United States, stand-alone commercial refrigeration units face a 150 GWP limit for manufacture and import from 1 January 2025, according to the EPA sector table. Refrigeration oil makers also test stability under ASHRAE 97 sealed tube methods, which FUCHS cites for RENISO.
Douglas Exclusive: the Refrigeration Oil Crankcase Ledger
The Crankcase Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 15 inputs: six compressor counts, six per-compressor oil charges, two counter prices and one service ratio. It is our estimate, not an official register, and it converts compressor units into refrigeration oil litres type by type.
| Compressor type | Units 2025 (million) | Oil charge per unit | Factory-fill litres (million) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hermetic reciprocating | 239.76 | 0.18 L | 43.16 |
| Rotary | 232.73 | 0.25 L | 58.18 |
| Scroll | 17.09 | 1.6 L | 27.35 |
| Semi-hermetic reciprocating | 0.89 | 4.0 L | 3.57 |
| Screw | 0.142 | 22 L | 3.12 |
| Centrifugal | 0.0313 | 110 L | 3.44 |
The ledger counts 490.64 million compressors and 138.83 million litres of refrigeration oil factory fill in 2025. Its finding is lopsided: scroll compressors are 3.5% of units but 19.7% of factory-fill litres, while hermetic reciprocating units are 48.9% of units and 31.1% of litres. Rotary compressors carry the largest pool at 41.9% of litres. A supplier approved on scroll platforms therefore reaches about one fifth of factory oil.
Methodology: how do 490.64 million compressors become refrigeration oil litres?
How this report is built
- Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
- Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
- The next scheduled review of this study is April 2027.
- Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.
Our refrigeration oil model starts from 467.1 million compressors sold in 2023, grows each type 2.1% to 3.0% a year to 2025, multiplies by per-unit charges and adds a 47% service uplift. That yields 204.08 million litres at USD 7.14, or USD 1.46 billion.
Counts come from JARN data published by the IIR for 2020 and 2023, covering six compressor types. Charges come from three manufacturer datasheets: 3.6 L for the Danfoss SZ161, 250 ml for the Tecumseh rotary and 180 cm3 for the Embraco EMT30CDP. Douglas Insights sizes the other three charges from frame size. The model tracks 5 regions and 5 oil types across 26 data points.
Three cross-checks agree closely. Three published estimates put 2024 or 2025 value between USD 1.30 billion and USD 1.38 billion, 5.3% to 10.8% below our USD 1.46 billion; our 4.54% CAGR falls inside their 4.1% to 4.86% range; and the 2035 segment sum of USD 2.25 billion sits within 0.7% of the regional total.

Which refrigeration oil signals should compressor buyers watch before 2030?
Three refrigeration oil signals matter before 2030: Chinese rotary output, the 1 January 2027 supermarket deadline and PAG approvals for R290 heat pumps. Together they explain about 2.29 of the 2.87 volume points in our model, so any of them moving early shifts the 2035 value by tens of millions of dollars.

Questions buyers ask
Why does a scroll compressor need so much more refrigeration oil than a rotary?
3.6 litres of POE fill a Danfoss SZ161 scroll against 250 ml in a Tecumseh rotary, because larger frames carry larger oil sumps. Scroll units are 3.5% of compressors but 19.7% of factory-fill litres.
What is the refrigeration oil market worth in 2025 and 2035?
USD 1.46 billion in 2025, rising to USD 2.27 billion by 2035 at 4.54% a year, built from 204.08 million litres at a blended USD 7.14 per litre.
Which oil chemistry earns the most refrigeration oil revenue?
41.6% of 2025 revenue, or USD 606.2 million, goes to POE, because HFC and HFO compressors in air conditioners, heat pumps and supermarket racks are approved on polyolester.
Why is PAG the quickest-growing refrigeration oil?
6.4% a year is the PAG growth rate, taking it to USD 344.2 million in 2035, as R290 heat pumps and R1234yf car air conditioning loops need glycol-based oils.
What do contractors pay for POE oil in a gallon can?
USD 129.58 per US gallon of Emkarate RL32-3MAF, or USD 34.24 per litre, against about USD 4.85 per litre that compressor plants pay in bulk.
How concentrated is refrigeration oil supply?
47.8% of 2025 revenue sits with ENEOS, Idemitsu Kosan and Lubrizol in Douglas Insights estimates, because compressor approvals lock one grade in for a whole product generation.
Where does refrigeration oil demand grow fastest?
6.25% a year in Middle East and Africa, from USD 84.5 million to USD 154.9 million, as hot climates and a 10.85 million unit Middle East air conditioning market drive compressor replacement.
How much of refrigeration oil volume is service rather than factory fill?
32.0% of litres, or 65.25 million litres in 2025, goes to service and aftermarket, yet that channel earns 53.8% of revenue because small packs sell at higher prices.
