INR 780 to 820 per kilogram is the realised asking price for a 186 kg mild-steel drum of 99% 2-isopropoxyethanol from a trader in Ankleshwar, Gujarat, and that drum price sits well above the bulk tier that sets the global 2-Isopropoxyethanol Market. 2-Isopropoxyethanol (Chemical Abstracts Service number 109-59-1, sold as isopropyl glycol ether (IPGE) or isopropyl glycol) is an E-series glycol ether solvent; the market covers technical grade, high-purity grade and laboratory grade material sold into lacquers, cleaners, inks, paints and brake fluids. Douglas Insights puts 2025 revenue at USD 115.7 million, built from 38,600 tonnes at an average realised USD 2,996.2 per tonne (38,600 t x USD 2,996.2 = USD 115.7 million), and sees USD 175.2 million in 2035, a revenue CAGR of 4.24%. Fresh United States volume evidence arrived on 16 April 2026, when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its 2024 Chemical Data Reporting (CDR) files covering production and import volumes for 2020 to 2023. The study belongs to our specialty chemicals coverage, and every number below follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.

Which grades and pack sizes of isopropyl glycol does this 2-isopropoxyethanol study count?

Three delivery tiers make up the 2-isopropoxyethanol count: bulk tank and ISO container loads carry 30,080 tonnes, drums and IBCs carry 7,920 tonnes, and laboratory packs plus high-purity lots carry 600 tonnes. Together they total 38,600 tonnes of merchant sales in 2025, valued at producer and distributor selling prices.

Technical grade material, typically 99% pure, dominates every bulk contract. High-purity grade is a separate line: INEOS lists both IPGE and an IPGE HP grade under the same CAS number. Laboratory grade covers catalogue bottles from 25 mL to 2.5 L. Captive use inside a producer’s own formulations is excluded, because no transfer price is visible. Intermediate bulk container (IBC) shipments sit with drums because both move through distributors rather than direct contracts.

The molecule is a colourless liquid that boils at 139.5 to 144.5 degrees Celsius and flashes at 44 degrees Celsius, which places 2-isopropoxyethanol between faster ethyl glycol ethers and slower butyl glycol ether in evaporation terms. That position is the commercial reason it exists.

How much do buyers pay per tonne of 2-isopropoxyethanol, from tank truck to 25 mL bottle?

Bulk buyers pay about USD 2,080 per tonne for 2-isopropoxyethanol, drum buyers about USD 5,650, and catalogue buyers far more. Douglas Insights calculates the volume-weighted 2025 realised average at USD 2,996.2 per tonne, because drum lots carry 38.7% of value on only 20.5% of tonnes.

The bulk band runs from roughly USD 1,900 to USD 2,300 per tonne in our model, set by tank and ISO container loads to coatings and cleaner formulators. That band sits above Northwest European spot assessments for butyl glycol ether near EUR 1,065 per tonne, since isopropyl glycol is made in smaller campaigns on shared glycol ether units.

Drum pricing is where the realised price point at the top of this page lives. A 186 kg drum at INR 780 to 820 per kilogram works out to INR 145,080 to 152,520 per drum. Western distributors such as Parchem quote drum, tote, ISO tank, railcar and barge options on request rather than publishing a list price.

Catalogue pricing shows the steepest pack-size premium. TCI lists its above 99.0% grade at USD 17 for 25 mL and USD 22 for 500 mL, which is USD 680 per litre against USD 44 per litre. Apollo Scientific asks GBP 75 for 100 g, GBP 125 for 500 g and GBP 185 for 1 kg of its 95% 2-isopropoxyethanol.

Which feedstock costs, ethylene oxide and isopropanol, set the 2-isopropoxyethanol cost floor?

European purified ethylene oxide (EO) contract prices near EUR 1,294 per tonne set most of the 2-isopropoxyethanol cost floor, with isopropanol as the second feed. US purified EO sits near 56.20 cents per pound and Chinese prompt EO near CNY 6,300 per tonne.

Those three EO benchmarks explain why our bulk tier sits at USD 2,080 rather than lower. Producers such as INEOS list 2-isopropoxyethanol beside butyl, methyl and ethyl glycol ethers on shared E-series units, so isopropyl glycol runs in campaigns, and campaign overheads land on a global bulk pool of only 30,080 tonnes.

Douglas Insights holds the price leg at 1.35% a year to 2035, lifting the average from USD 2,996.2 to about USD 3,426.2 per tonne. The leg stays modest because the EO benchmarks above were flat to falling in the latest weekly and monthly assessments.

Which application of 2-isopropoxyethanol makes the money: lacquer, cleaner or printing ink?

Lacquer and resin solvents lead 2-isopropoxyethanol revenue with 34.6% of 2025 value, or USD 40.0 million. Cellulose ester lacquers, alkyd thinners and resin cut-backs need its mid-range evaporation and strong solvency, which neither ethyl nor butyl glycol ether matches alone.

Application segment Share of 2025 value 2025 value Growth 2026-2035 2035 value
Lacquer and resin solvents 34.6% USD 40.0 million 3.62% USD 57.1 million
Household and industrial cleaners 22.7% USD 26.3 million 4.71% USD 41.7 million
Printing inks and ink thinners 16.9% USD 19.6 million 3.18% USD 26.8 million
Coalescent in water-based paints 13.2% USD 15.3 million 6.34% USD 28.3 million
Brake fluid diluent and other uses 12.6% USD 14.5 million 3.92% USD 21.3 million

Lacquer and resin solvents hold USD 40.0 million and grow 3.62% a year to USD 57.1 million; Douglas Insights ties the share to solvent-borne wood and furniture lacquers, the main use named in the Polish occupational-health dossier for the substance.

Household and industrial cleaners take 22.7% and USD 26.3 million, rising at 4.71% to USD 41.7 million, because 2-isopropoxyethanol couples water and oily soils in glass and metal cleaners. Car care products fall inside this segment.

Printing inks and ink thinners account for USD 19.6 million, a 16.9% share, and grow slowest at 3.18% as gravure inks shift to water and energy-curable systems.

Coalescent in water-based paints is the fastest-growing segment at 6.34% a year, expanding from USD 15.3 million to USD 28.3 million. Its 13.2% share is still modest, but every tonne of solvent removed from a decorative paint needs a coalescent or flow aid to form a film.

Brake fluid diluent and other uses make up USD 14.5 million (12.6%), growing 3.92% to USD 21.3 million. The group also holds textile and leather dye carriers, agricultural formulations and fragrance use.

Why are paint and cleaner formulators adding 2-isopropoxyethanol tonnes over the next decade?

Four forces lift 2-isopropoxyethanol tonnage by 2.85% a year: water-based coalescent demand adds 1.05 points, cleaner reformulation 0.90, ink and packaging print 0.48, and high-purity electronics use 0.42. Together they take volume from 38,600 to about 51,125 tonnes.

Water-based coatings contribute the largest share, 1.05 percentage points. Decorative and light industrial paint makers keep cutting volatile organic compound (VOC) content, and a coalescent with 2-isopropoxyethanol’s 0.44 kPa vapour pressure at 20 degrees Celsius leaves the film quickly once it has done its job. Our segment model has the coalescent line growing 6.34% a year, more than double the ink line. Readers following the paint side can compare our Industrial Liquid Coatings Market study.

Cleaner reformulation adds 0.90 points. Hard-surface and glass cleaners use 2-isopropoxyethanol as a coupling agent between water, surfactant and soil, and the household and industrial cleaners segment grows 4.71% a year in our base case. That pace tracks the wider Home Care Chemicals Market and the surfactant pool behind it, covered in our Surfactant Market report.

Printing inks contribute 0.48 points despite slow segment growth, because flexible packaging print volumes in Asia Pacific still add solvent-borne ink tonnes even as Western converters switch. Asia Pacific grows 5.12% a year in our regional model, faster than any other region.

High-purity electronics use adds the final 0.42 points. INEOS sells an IPGE HP grade beside standard IPGE, and Japanese suppliers such as Nippon Nyukazai market glycol ether solvents with metals controlled at parts-per-billion level for photoresist strippers and cleaning agents. Laboratory packs and high-purity lots are only 600 tonnes, yet they carry 7.2% of value.

Drum-scale buyers in India add a further, smaller pull inside these four forces. The Ankleshwar drum quote of INR 780 to 820 per kilogram, with a 186 kg minimum order, shows a merchant channel that sells 2-isopropoxyethanol to pharmaceutical and industrial users one drum at a time. Douglas Insights expects drum and IBC tonnes to rise from 7,920 to roughly 10,490 by 2035 at the same 2.85% pace, keeping the drum tier near 38.7% of value.

Better data now supports the US part of the forecast. The EPA’s 2024 CDR release on 16 April 2026 gives manufacturers’ reported production volumes, uses and processing for 2020 to 2023, and its next submission window runs from 1 June to 30 September 2028.

Which hurdles keep 2-isopropoxyethanol growth below the wider glycol ether average?

Toxicity labelling is the largest hurdle, removing an estimated 0.55 points from 2-isopropoxyethanol volume growth. Japan classifies it for repeated-exposure damage to blood (Category 1), and the 25 ppm threshold limit value carries a skin notation, which gives formulators a reason to test alternatives.

Substitution pressure removes a further 0.30 points. Butyl glycol ether (BGE) trades near EUR 1,065 per tonne in Northwest Europe and butyl diglycol ether near EUR 1,560, so a coatings buyer paying our USD 2,080 bulk average for 2-isopropoxyethanol can often reformulate toward the cheaper, larger-volume solvent when evaporation rate allows.

Supply concentration removes 0.20 points. Of the glycol ether makers whose product pages we read, only INEOS publishes an isopropyl glycol grade, so Western buyers have few contract alternatives. Douglas Insights counts these three restraints as 1.05 points already netted out of the 2.85% volume leg.

Who supplies isopropyl glycol ether, from INEOS reactors to laboratory catalogues?

INEOS leads the merchant 2-isopropoxyethanol trade: Douglas Insights estimates INEOS holds about 31.4% of 2025 value, a share anchored on its published IPGE and IPGE HP grades and three glycol ether units. The rest splits across Asian producers and catalogue suppliers.

INEOS Oxide lists IPGE and IPGE HP under CAS 109-59-1, shipped in tank containers, IBCs and drums, and names glycol ether units at Antwerp in Belgium, Lavera in France and Bayport in Texas. That three-continent footprint is the basis of our 31.4% estimate; INEOS does not disclose IPGE revenue.

Company Position built on Douglas Insights estimated share of 2025 value
INEOS Oxide IPGE and IPGE HP from Antwerp, Lavera and Bayport glycol ether units 31.4%
Thermo Fisher Scientific Thermo Scientific 99% grade, catalogue L13241 1.9%
Merck KGaA (MilliporeSigma) Sigma-Aldrich 99% grade through laboratory distribution 1.7%
TCI Above 99.0% GC grade, product E0110 1.4%
Apollo Scientific 95% grade, 100 g to 1 kg packs 0.3%
Parchem US distribution in drums, totes, ISO tanks, railcars and barges Reseller, not counted

Thermo Fisher Scientific sells a 99% 2-isopropoxyethanol under the Thermo Scientific brand, and Merck KGaA offers a 99% Sigma-Aldrich grade, listed as a non-distribution accommodation item in the United States. TCI publishes the most transparent prices. Apollo Scientific in the United Kingdom stocks a 95% grade. Parchem resells technical material and lists synonyms including Isopropyl Oxitol and IPG. Shree Sadguru Enterprise of Ankleshwar sells 186 kg drums into Indian pharmaceutical and industrial users.

Together the four catalogue houses hold an estimated 5.3% of value, inside the 7.2% laboratory tier. Producers in China, Japan and Korea, which do not publish IPGE product pages we could read, hold most of the remaining value. The CDR data released on 16 April 2026 by the EPA is the next place to test the US side of this split.

Where is 2-isopropoxyethanol consumed, and which region grows fastest?

Asia Pacific is both the largest and the fastest 2-isopropoxyethanol region, with USD 48.4 million in 2025 (41.8% of value) growing 5.12% a year. It reaches USD 79.7 million by 2035 as furniture lacquer, packaging ink and electronics cleaning capacity keeps moving there.

Region 2025 value CAGR 2026-2035 2035 value
Asia Pacific USD 48.4 million 5.12% USD 79.7 million
Europe USD 28.1 million 3.07% USD 38.0 million
North America USD 25.1 million 3.41% USD 35.1 million
Latin America USD 7.9 million 4.46% USD 12.2 million
Middle East and Africa USD 6.2 million 5.10% USD 10.2 million

Europe holds USD 28.1 million and grows 3.07% to USD 38.0 million, held back by solvent substitution in decorative paint. North America contributes USD 25.1 million, rising 3.41% to USD 35.1 million, with cleaners and automotive refinish as the main outlets for 2-isopropoxyethanol.

Latin America adds USD 7.9 million today and USD 12.2 million by 2035 at 4.46% a year, tied to Brazilian and Mexican paint output. The Middle East and Africa is the wildcard: USD 6.2 million now, growing 5.10% to USD 10.2 million, and a single new coatings plant in the Gulf could lift that line faster than modelled.

Which exposure-limit rules govern 2-isopropoxyethanol handling in Japan, Poland and the US?

2-Isopropoxyethanol carries a 25 ppm eight-hour threshold limit value (TLV) with a skin notation from the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), but no binding US federal limit. Japan and Poland regulate it more tightly than the United States does.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pocket Guide lists no recommended exposure limit, no Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) and no determined immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) value for 2-isopropoxyethanol. US buyers therefore work to the ACGIH figure in practice.

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) model safety data sheet classifies 2-isopropoxyethanol under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) as a Category 3 flammable liquid with Category 1 repeated-exposure toxicity to blood, a classification performed on 22 August 2013. It names the substance for labelling (Article 57), notification (Article 57-2) and risk assessment (Article 57-3) under the Industrial Safety and Health Act.

Poland’s maximum admissible concentration (NDS) documentation sets 20 mg/m3 with a skin notation and no short-term value; Germany and Switzerland use 22 mg/m3 with a 44 mg/m3 short-term limit, while France, Denmark and Australia use about 105 mg/m3. No EU-wide limit exists under Directive 2000/39/EC, so 2-isopropoxyethanol compliance costs differ by plant location.

Is butyl glycol ether a cheaper swap for 2-isopropoxyethanol in lacquer thinners?

Butyl glycol ether costs roughly half of 2-isopropoxyethanol per tonne in Europe, EUR 1,065 against our USD 2,080 bulk average, yet it evaporates more slowly. The swap works in slow-drying enamels but fails where lacquer lines need a faster flash-off.

Our substitution test rests on two physical figures. 2-Isopropoxyethanol flashes at 44 degrees Celsius and boils near 142 degrees, close to the window that cellulose lacquer lines are designed around. Any replacement solvent changes evaporation and solvency, so reformulation takes a full qualification cycle. Douglas Insights models 0.30 points of yearly volume loss to substitution, not more, because each swap needs that cycle.

What if coalescent volumes stall or electronics-grade purity takes off before 2035?

2-Isopropoxyethanol revenue lands between USD 146.9 million and USD 208.7 million in 2035, around a USD 175.2 million base case. The slower case assumes 1.60% volume and 0.80% price growth; the faster case assumes 4.10% volume and 1.90% price.

In the slower case, coalescent demand stalls as paint makers adopt coalescent-free binders, and revenue compounds at only 2.42%. In the faster case, high-purity grades for electronics cleaning gain share and Asia Pacific lacquer output holds up, giving a 6.08% revenue CAGR. A single extra point of tonnage growth adds about USD 17.8 million to the 2035 total.

Our 4.24% base CAGR runs below published forecasts of 5.1% to 9.0% a year for 2-isopropoxyethanol and the wider glycol ether pool. The gap is deliberate: those figures cover the whole glycol ether family, where butyl and propylene ethers grow faster than isopropyl glycol. US volume data in the CDR files released on 16 April 2026 will decide which side of the range American demand sits on.

Douglas Exclusive: the Isopropyl Glycol Grade-and-Pack Price Tracker

The Isopropyl Glycol Grade-and-Pack Price Tracker is a Douglas Insights model built from 10 inputs: 7 published price quotes and 3 European price benchmarks. The quotes are two Indian drum prices, two TCI catalogue prices and three Apollo Scientific pack prices; the benchmarks cover ethylene oxide and two competing glycol ethers. It tracks how much a buyer pays for 2-isopropoxyethanol at each pack size, not an official price register.

Pack or tier Sourced quote Price per unit volume or mass Multiple of our bulk tier
Bulk tank and ISO container Douglas Insights model USD 2.08 per kg 1.0x
Drums and IBCs Douglas Insights model USD 5.65 per kg 2.7x
186 kg drum, India INR 780 to 820 per kg INR 780 to 820 per kg Not converted
Apollo 1 kg GBP 185 GBP 185 per kg Not converted
Apollo 500 g GBP 125 GBP 250 per kg Not converted
Apollo 100 g GBP 75 GBP 750 per kg Not converted
TCI 500 mL USD 22 USD 44 per litre About 21x
TCI 25 mL USD 17 USD 680 per litre About 327x

The tracker’s finding is a pack-size curve, not a single price. Moving from Apollo’s 1 kg bottle to its 100 g bottle multiplies the per-kilogram price by 4.1, and moving from TCI’s 500 mL bottle to 25 mL multiplies the per-litre price by 15.5. For 2-isopropoxyethanol, the realised average therefore depends more on pack mix than on any feedstock swing.

That is why laboratory packs, only 1.6% of tonnes, carry 7.2% of 2025 value. Douglas Insights refreshes the tracker at each edition and flags any input older than 12 months.

How the model turns 38,600 tonnes of 2-isopropoxyethanol into USD 115.7 million?

30,080 t x USD 2,080 + 7,920 t x USD 5,650 + 600 t x USD 13,900 = USD 115.7 million of 2-isopropoxyethanol revenue in 2025. Volume grows 2.85% and price 1.35% a year, giving USD 175.2 million by 2035.

The model counts 5 regions, 5 application segments, 3 delivery tiers and 10 sourced price inputs. Regional rows sum to USD 115.7 million in 2025 and USD 175.2 million in 2035; segment rows reconcile to the same totals within 0.1%. Tonnes reach about 51,125 by 2035 at an average of USD 3,426.2 per tonne.

Two cross-checks bound the result. One published estimate for 2-isopropoxyethanol puts 2025 revenue at about 2.5 times our figure; we sit lower because we count only merchant sales at realised prices and exclude captive use. Against a published glycol ether total near USD 9.97 billion for 2025, our USD 115.7 million equals 1.16% of the family, a plausible share for a single minor E-series ether.
