On 3 October 2024 the European Commission adopted Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2635, approving silver zinc zeolite as a biocidal active substance for disinfectants, film preservatives and polymer preservatives from 1 March 2026 to 29 February 2036. Silver zinc zeolite is the agent inside several leading antimicrobial powder coatings. Douglas Insights values antimicrobial powder coatings at USD 1.44 billion in 2025, or USD 1.4 billion at one decimal, and forecasts USD 3.61 billion by 2035, a compound growth rate of 9.63% a year. The receipt is 131,600 tonnes of antimicrobial powder coatings sold in 2025 at an average USD 10.94 per kilogram. Tonnage grows 7.9% a year as hospitals, food plants and building owners specify hygienic metal finishes, and the average price rises 1.6% a year as silver-based grades and certified test data take a larger share. The study sits within Douglas Insights coverage of specialty chemicals and follows the published Douglas Insights research methodology.

What do antimicrobial powder coatings cover, and what sits outside the study?

Antimicrobial powder coatings in this study are thermoset powder finishes with a built-in biocidal additive, sold as powder to coaters and equipment makers, worth USD 1.44 billion in 2025. The additive is dispersed through the film, cutting bacteria and mould on the cured surface by 99% or more under the ISO 22196 test. Six end uses make up the antimicrobial powder coatings total: healthcare facilities and medical equipment, food processing and foodservice equipment, architectural and building hardware, HVAC and air handling components, office, school and public furniture, and transit and public space interiors.

The antimicrobial powder coatings study also splits tonnage by antimicrobial agent into silver-based, zinc-based, copper-based and organic biocides, and by resin chemistry into polyester, epoxy-polyester hybrid, epoxy and polyurethane. Liquid antimicrobial paints, antimicrobial additives sold on their own to formulators, coating application services and finished articles such as beds or door handles are excluded. Antimicrobial additives moulded into plastic parts sit in the Antibacterial Plastics Market report, and functional powder finishes for battery housings sit in the Battery Flame Retardant Powder Coating Market report.

What did the EU approval of silver zinc zeolite change for antimicrobial powder coatings?

The EU approval of silver zinc zeolite secured the agent behind about 22% of 2025 antimicrobial powder coatings tonnage, Douglas Insights estimates, for a full ten years from 1 March 2026. The Biocidal Products Committee of the European Chemicals Agency backed approval for product-types 2, 7 and 9 at its February 2024 meeting, and the Commission turned that opinion into law in October 2024. Product-type 7 covers film preservatives used in paints and coatings.

The approval came with limits that matter for antimicrobial powder coatings. Silver zinc zeolite must be at least 990 grams per kilogram pure, arsenic and chromium are each capped at 40 milligrams per kilogram, and paints and coatings treated under product-type 7 may not be used on outdoor infrastructure. Treated polymer articles that touch skin are limited to 300 square centimetres of contact for adults and children over two. The October 2024 decision removes a withdrawal risk from the drivers and favours coating makers with dossier support.

What drives antimicrobial powder coatings tonnage?

Four drivers lift antimicrobial powder coatings tonnage by 7.9% a year, and hospital infection control is the first. The World Health Organization reported in its first global report on infection prevention and control that 7 of every 100 patients in acute-care hospitals in high-income countries, and 15 of every 100 in low- and middle-income countries, acquire at least one healthcare-associated infection, and that about 70% of these infections can be prevented with good practice. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control counts 4.3 million patients a year with such an infection in EU and EEA hospitals. Douglas Insights estimates that about 18% of powder-coated metal bought for new hospital beds, trolleys, cabinets and wall systems specified an antimicrobial grade in 2025, rising to about 31% by 2035.

Food safety audits are the second driver. Meat, dairy and ready-meal plants, commercial kitchens and supermarkets use coated steel for racking, conveyors and refrigerated displays, and auditors look for surfaces that resist mould between cleans. Douglas Insights estimates antimicrobial powder coatings in food processing and foodservice equipment grow 9.1% a year, from USD 284 million in 2025 to USD 678 million in 2035, as equipment makers such as refrigeration and shelving suppliers add antimicrobial finishes as a catalogue option at 20% to 40% over standard powder.

Ventilation retrofits are the third driver. Building owners upgrading ventilation in schools and offices after 2020 increasingly specify mould-resistant finishes on duct and air handling metalwork. Douglas Insights estimates HVAC and air handling components are the fastest-growing antimicrobial powder coatings end use at 11.4% a year, because each air handling unit carries 40 to 120 kilograms of coated panel and the antimicrobial grade adds only about 1% to the unit price.

The shift from liquid paint to powder is the fourth driver. Powder coatings emit almost no volatile organic compounds, reuse overspray and cure in one pass, so equipment makers moving off solvent-borne paint to meet emission limits switch whole lines to powder. AkzoNobel, the largest powder maker, reported powder coatings revenue of EUR 1.28 billion in its 2025 annual report. Douglas Insights estimates antimicrobial grades held about 3.4% of global powder tonnage in 2025 and reach about 5.1% by 2035, as every converted line gains the option to run an antimicrobial powder coatings grade with no new equipment.

What holds back antimicrobial powder coatings in hospitals and kitchens?

Three restraints trim about 3.1 points a year from antimicrobial powder coatings growth, and claim limits are the first. In the United States a coating that makes public-health claims must be registered as a pesticide, and most coated articles rely on the treated article exemption, which allows claims only about protecting the article itself. Douglas Insights removes about 1.3 points a year from antimicrobial powder coatings tonnage growth for buyers who will not pay a premium without a claim that the surface protects patients.

Evidence is the second restraint. Laboratory tests such as ISO 22196 show reductions above 99% at 35 degrees Celsius and high humidity, but hospital studies linking antimicrobial surfaces to fewer infections remain small. Douglas Insights removes about 1.0 point a year from healthcare growth for antimicrobial powder coatings on this ground.

Silver price swings are the third restraint. Silver is the main cost in the most common antimicrobial additives, and the silver price moved by more than 30% within single years between 2020 and 2025. Douglas Insights removes about 0.8 points a year from antimicrobial powder coatings growth for margin risk on fixed-price coater contracts.

Which end use carries the value in antimicrobial powder coatings?

Healthcare facilities and medical equipment carry the most antimicrobial powder coatings value at 31.4% of 2025 revenue, USD 452 million, while HVAC and air handling components grow fastest at 11.4% a year.

Antimicrobial powder coatings end use 2025 value Share 2035 value CAGR 2026-2035
Healthcare facilities and medical equipment USD 452 million 31.4% USD 1.24 billion 10.6%
Food processing and foodservice equipment USD 284 million 19.7% USD 678 million 9.1%
Architectural and building hardware USD 248 million 17.2% USD 511 million 7.51%
HVAC and air handling components USD 181 million 12.6% USD 534 million 11.4%
Office, school and public furniture USD 148 million 10.3% USD 326 million 8.2%
Transit and public space interiors USD 127 million 8.8% USD 323 million 9.8%

Healthcare facilities and medical equipment are worth USD 452 million in 2025. Bed frames, trolleys, cabinets, wall panels and ceiling systems are coated in bulk, and hospital tenders in North America, the Gulf and Northern Europe now list an antimicrobial finish as a scored item.

Food processing and foodservice equipment is worth USD 284 million in 2025. Racking, refrigerated displays, conveyor frames and kitchen fittings need surfaces that stay free of mould between wash-downs, and equipment makers sell the antimicrobial finish as a paid option.

Architectural and building hardware is worth USD 248 million in 2025. Door handles, push plates, handrails and washroom partitions are touched constantly, but this end use grows slowest at 7.51% because construction cycles and EU outdoor limits cap volume.

HVAC and air handling components are worth USD 181 million in 2025 and grow fastest at 11.4% a year to USD 534 million, because ventilation upgrades in schools, offices and hospitals specify mould-resistant panels and grilles at a small cost per unit.

Office, school and public furniture is worth USD 148 million in 2025. Steel desks, lockers, shelving and seating frames in schools and offices carry antimicrobial finishes mainly where public buyers write hygiene into tender specifications.

Transit and public space interiors are worth USD 127 million in 2025. Handrails, seat frames and panels in trains, buses, airports and stations use antimicrobial powder coatings, and fleet renewals in Asia and the Gulf lift this end use by 9.8% a year.

How do antimicrobial agent and resin chemistry split antimicrobial powder coatings?

By antimicrobial agent, Douglas Insights estimates silver-based grades, including silver ion, silver zeolite and silver zinc zeolite, take 68% of 2025 antimicrobial powder coatings revenue, zinc-based grades 12%, copper-based grades 9% and organic biocides 11%. By resin chemistry, polyester takes about 46%, epoxy-polyester hybrid 29%, epoxy 17% and polyurethane 8%. Polyester leads because it holds colour on architectural and transit parts, while epoxy and hybrids suit indoor medical and kitchen equipment.

Which region buys the most antimicrobial powder coatings?

North America buys the most antimicrobial powder coatings at 33.8% of 2025 revenue, USD 487 million, growing 8.7% a year to USD 1.12 billion by 2035. US hospital construction, kitchen equipment makers and early launches by Axalta, PPG and Sherwin-Williams keep the region in front.

Asia Pacific is the fastest-growing region for antimicrobial powder coatings at 11.43% a year, from USD 426 million in 2025 to USD 1.26 billion in 2035. China, India and Southeast Asia are building hospitals, food plants and metro systems quickly, and much of the world’s steel furniture and HVAC equipment is coated in the region for export. Europe spends USD 402 million in 2025 and grows 8.3% a year to USD 892 million; the silver zinc zeolite approval secures supply, but the outdoor infrastructure limit and slow construction hold growth below the global rate. Latin America spends USD 73.4 million and grows 10.2% a year, led by hospital and food plant projects in Brazil and Mexico. The Middle East and Africa is the wildcard at USD 51.8 million in 2025 and 10.9% a year: Gulf hospital programmes specify antimicrobial finishes widely, while most of Africa buys very little.

Which companies supply antimicrobial powder coatings, and how concentrated is the field?

Douglas Insights estimates AkzoNobel holds about 17.8% of 2025 antimicrobial powder coatings revenue, and the top three suppliers hold about 41%, so large powder makers lead but regional formulators keep a real share.

Company Antimicrobial powder coatings product and strength Est. 2025 share
AkzoNobel Interpon AM and Interpon D AM with BioCote technology; largest global powder network 17.8%
Axalta Alesta AM with silver zinc zeolite; strong in US medical and foodservice equipment 12.4%
Sherwin-Williams Silver-ion antimicrobial option across its powder colours and chemistries 10.9%
PPG SILVERSAN silver-ion powders in epoxy, hybrid and polyester, with 48-hour US quick-ship 8.7%
TIGER Coatings TIGER Drylac antimicrobial powders for architecture and furniture 5.6%
Regional powder makers and toll formulators Local antimicrobial grades for hospital, kitchen and furniture coaters 44.6%

Advantage in antimicrobial powder coatings rests on additive supply agreements, test data under ISO 22196 and regulatory support in each market. AkzoNobel says its Interpon AM range reduces bacteria and mould by up to 99.9% and is validated to ISO 22196:2011. Axalta supplied more than 7,000 pounds of Alesta AM for bed frames at the McCormick Place field hospital in Chicago in April 2020, according to its investor release. PPG positions SILVERSAN on protection of the paint film against mould and mildew. After the October 2024 EU decision, Douglas Insights expects suppliers of silver zinc zeolite grades to win European hospital tenders from makers relying on agents still under review.

What price premium do antimicrobial powder coatings carry per kilogram?

An average kilogram of antimicrobial powder coatings sold for USD 10.94 in 2025, and Douglas Insights expects about USD 12.82 by 2035. Standard polyester and hybrid powders sold for about USD 5 to USD 8 per kilogram in 2025, so antimicrobial grades carry a premium of roughly 30% to 60%, depending on silver loading, colour and batch size. Silver-based grades for medical equipment in small custom colours reach USD 14 to USD 18 per kilogram, while zinc-based and organic grades for furniture sell close to USD 8. The average antimicrobial powder coatings price rises 1.6% a year as silver grades and certified healthcare work gain share.

Do antimicrobial powder coatings keep working after years of hospital cleaning?

Antimicrobial powder coatings keep their effect for the life of the film, typically 10 to 20 years indoors, because the additive is spread through the whole coating rather than sitting on top. Silver ions released from zeolite carriers continue to act as the surface wears. Once a coating chips down to bare metal, the effect is lost at that spot. Douglas Insights estimates that the service life of antimicrobial powder coatings on hospital equipment is similar to that of standard powder, so buyers pay the premium once, which makes the finish cheaper per year of service than the USD 10.94 average suggests.

How large could antimicrobial powder coatings grow by 2035 under each silver outlook?

The base scenario takes antimicrobial powder coatings to USD 3.61 billion by 2035, inside a range of USD 2.47 billion to USD 5.04 billion. The base case combines 7.9% tonnage growth with a 1.6% annual price rise, for 9.63% a year. The slower scenario assumes further EU limits on silver compounds, weaker hospital building and a fall in silver loadings, setting the legs at 4.9% and 0.6% for 5.53% a year and USD 2.47 billion. The faster scenario assumes hospitals and food plants write antimicrobial finishes into standard specifications worldwide after the October 2024 approval, setting the legs at 10.8% and 2.3% for 13.35% a year and USD 5.04 billion. Each 1-point change in tonnage growth moves the 2035 antimicrobial powder coatings figure by about USD 349 million. Published forecasts for this product sit between about 9.2% and 11.9% a year, and the Douglas Insights base case sits inside that range at the lower half because it excludes liquid paints and stand-alone additives.

Which biocide laws decide what antimicrobial powder coatings may claim?

Two biocide laws decide what antimicrobial powder coatings may claim, and the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (EU) No 528/2012 is the first. Under it, a coated article counts as a treated article, which may only contain active substances approved for the relevant product-type, must be labelled with the biocide it contains, and may only claim properties that the approval supports. Silver zinc zeolite now holds approval to 29 February 2036.

In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency regulates antimicrobial additives under federal pesticide law, and Pesticide Registration Notice 2000-1 sets out the treated article exemption at 40 CFR 152.25(a). The additive must be registered for that use, and sellers of antimicrobial powder coatings may claim protection of the coating against odour, mould or staining but not protection of people against disease-causing germs. The test method most buyers ask for is ISO 22196:2011, which measures antibacterial activity on non-porous surfaces. Douglas Insights estimates registration, labelling and testing add 4% to 7% to the price of an antimicrobial powder coatings grade sold in both Europe and the United States.

Douglas Exclusive: the antimicrobial powder coatings claims ledger

The claims ledger records, for 23 countries, which antimicrobial agents are approved for use in powder coatings, which marketing claims each regulator allows, and which test standard buyers accept, and it shows that 61% of claims used in 2025 sales material would need rewording to comply in at least one of those markets. Coaters use the ledger before launching an antimicrobial powder coatings line abroad. It also lists approval expiry dates, such as 29 February 2036 for silver zinc zeolite in the EU.
