China’s shipyards completed 53.69 million deadweight tonnes of ships in 2025, 56.1% of the world total and 11.4% more than in 2024, took 107.82 million tonnes of new orders and ended the year with a 274.42 million tonne order book, up 31.5%, according to Ministry of Industry and Information Technology figures reported on 5 February 2026; four months later, on 1 June 2026, China’s merged VOC standard for industrial coatings, GB 30981.2-2025, took effect. Asia Pacific is painting more hulls, car bodies and machines than ever, under tighter solvent rules. The Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings market covers the paints, primers, clear coats and varnishes applied as a liquid to manufactured goods and structures in China, Japan, India, Southeast Asia, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand and the rest of the region: general industrial, protective and marine, automotive OEM and parts, wood, coil, packaging, and aerospace and specialty coatings. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 33.2 billion in 2025, from 9.75 million tonnes at an average USD 3.40 a kilogram, and at USD 55.6 billion in 2035, a revenue CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 5.30%. The study sits in our specialty chemicals coverage, and every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.

Which Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings end uses carry the value: general industrial, marine or automotive?

General industrial coatings carry the most Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings value, 30.0% of 2025, USD 9.95 billion, because the region makes most of the world’s machinery and appliances. Aerospace and specialty grow fastest, 7.40% a year.

End use Share 2025 Value 2025 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
General industrial 30.0% USD 9.95 billion 5.00% USD 16.2 billion
Protective and marine 21.0% USD 6.96 billion 6.20% USD 12.7 billion
Automotive OEM and parts 17.0% USD 5.64 billion 4.60% USD 8.84 billion
Wood coatings 12.0% USD 3.98 billion 4.80% USD 6.36 billion
Coil coatings 8.0% USD 2.65 billion 4.90% USD 4.28 billion
Packaging coatings 7.0% USD 2.32 billion 5.20% USD 3.85 billion
Aerospace and specialty 5.0% USD 1.66 billion 7.40% USD 3.38 billion

General industrial leads at USD 9.95 billion because thousands of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Indian makers of machinery, construction equipment, appliances and electrical cabinets each buy a few hundred tonnes; it grows 5.00% a year as plants open in India and Vietnam. Protective and marine, USD 6.96 billion, grows 6.20% a year because Chinese, Korean and Japanese yards build most of the world’s ships, and every hull needs anticorrosive primers and antifouling topcoats. Automotive OEM and parts, USD 5.64 billion, grows 4.60%: China built 34.531 million vehicles in 2025, a record, CAAM data show, but expects only about 1% growth in 2026.

Wood coatings, USD 3.98 billion, grow 4.80% as furniture exports shift from China to Vietnam and Malaysia; the timber behind them is sized in our Asia Pacific Wood Product Market report. Coil coatings, USD 2.65 billion, grow 4.90% on pre-painted steel for warehouses and appliances; packaging coatings, USD 2.32 billion, 5.20% on beverage cans in India and Southeast Asia. Aerospace and specialty, USD 1.66 billion, grows fastest, 7.40% a year, on Chinese commercial aircraft programmes and electronics coatings. End-use values for 2035 sum to USD 55.6 billion, 0.07% above the headline. The worldwide figures are in our Industrial Liquid Coatings Market report.

What drives Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings tonnage up 3.90% a year?

Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings tonnage grows 3.90% a year, from 9.75 million tonnes in 2025 to about 14.3 million in 2035, because shipbuilding, vehicle output, factory relocation, energy steel and cans add 4.90 points before restraints.

Price per kilogram adds 1.35% a year on top, as waterborne and high-solids grades replace cheaper solvent paints. Five drivers make up the gross volume leg.

Chinese, Korean and Japanese shipbuilding: 1.30 points

Ships add 1.30 points. China’s order book rose 31.5% to 274.42 million deadweight tonnes at the end of 2025, and its new orders made up 69% of the world’s, the MIIT figures show. Hulls ordered now are painted over the next five years, and each is repainted in dry dock every five years after.

Factories moving to India and Southeast Asia: 1.20 points

Relocation adds 1.20 points. Electronics, machinery and appliance plants that leave China for India, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia each need a new paint line, and Indian two-wheeler production reached 2.17 crore (21.7 million) units in 2025-26, up 10.7%, SIAM data show.

Vehicle production: 0.90 points

Vehicles add 0.90 points. China’s record 34.531 million vehicles of 2025 included more than 7 million exports, and India built 46.43 lakh passenger vehicles in 2025-26, up 7.9%, with commercial vehicles up 12.6%, the same SIAM release states.

Energy and infrastructure steel: 0.90 points

Steel structures add 0.90 points. Wind towers, transmission pylons, bridges and offshore platforms across China, India and Southeast Asia need multi-coat protective systems, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Beverage cans and packaging: 0.60 points

Packaging adds 0.60 points as Indian and Southeast Asian drinkers switch from glass and PET to cans. The five contributions, 1.30 + 1.20 + 0.90 + 0.90 + 0.60, give 4.90 points.

What holds back Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings: China’s property slump or powder and UV?

Three headwinds remove 1.00 point from Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings volume growth, leaving 3.90% a year: China’s construction slump takes 0.40 points, powder and UV substitution 0.40 points, and flat Japanese output 0.20 points.

Construction is the largest brake. Coil, wood and steel-structure coatings follow building activity, and China’s housing and commercial construction has kept shrinking through 2026, as our Asia Pacific Wood Product Market report tracks, so Douglas Insights removes 0.40 points. Substitution removes another 0.40 points: GB 30981.2-2025 caps solvent passenger-car basecoats at 750 g/L, 10% lower than before, and sets 100 g/L for solvent-free coatings, REACH24H summarised, which pushes some appliance and furniture lines to powder or UV-cured coatings that this market does not count.

Japan removes 0.20 points. Japanese factory and vehicle output has been flat for a decade, so its coatings tonnage barely grows even where prices rise; Nippon Paint’s Japan revenue rose 1.1% in 2025, PCI reported from the company’s results.

Where in Asia Pacific are industrial liquid coatings bought, and why does India grow fastest?

China buys the most Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings, USD 18.2 billion or 55.0% of 2025, Douglas Insights estimates. India grows fastest, 9.20% a year to USD 7.19 billion by 2035, and adds 18.8% of new value.

Country or sub-region Value 2025 Share 2025 Value 2026 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
China USD 18.2 billion 55.0% USD 19.1 billion 4.80% USD 29.1 billion
Japan USD 3.48 billion 10.5% USD 3.54 billion 1.80% USD 4.16 billion
Southeast Asia USD 3.15 billion 9.5% USD 3.39 billion 7.60% USD 6.55 billion
India USD 2.98 billion 9.0% USD 3.26 billion 9.20% USD 7.19 billion
South Korea USD 2.65 billion 8.0% USD 2.76 billion 4.20% USD 4.00 billion
Taiwan USD 995 million 3.0% USD 1.03 billion 3.40% USD 1.39 billion
Australia and New Zealand USD 829 million 2.5% USD 850 million 2.60% USD 1.07 billion
Rest of Asia Pacific USD 829 million 2.5% USD 883 million 6.50% USD 1.56 billion

China leads because it builds more than half the world’s ships and about a third of its vehicles, and its coil, appliance and machinery plants are the largest anywhere; it grows 4.80% a year and its share falls from 55.0% to 52.4% by 2035. India, USD 2.98 billion, grows 9.20% a year because vehicle, two-wheeler and appliance output is rising at 8% to 13% a year and new electronics and rail plants are opening. Southeast Asia, USD 3.15 billion, grows 7.60% on factories relocated from China to Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

South Korea, USD 2.65 billion, grows 4.20% on its shipyards and car plants; Japan, USD 3.48 billion, grows 1.80%; Taiwan, USD 995 million, 3.40%; Australia and New Zealand, USD 829 million, 2.60% on mining and infrastructure steel; the rest of Asia Pacific, 6.50%. Country values for 2035 sum to USD 55.1 billion, 0.92% below the headline; in the data table the row labelled Global holds the Asia Pacific total. This report follows the scope of our worldwide report, which excludes automotive refinish and includes aerospace, so it is not the same boundary as our Europe Industrial Liquid Coatings Market report, which counts body-shop refinish.

Which suppliers dominate Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings as AkzoNobel and Axalta wait for China’s approval?

Nippon Paint is the largest Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings supplier, with about 6.0% of 2025 value, USD 1.99 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate. The top three, Nippon Paint, PPG and AkzoNobel, hold about 16.0%; the market is fragmented.

Company What the position rests on Estimated Asia Pacific share 2025 Estimated value 2025
Nippon Paint Automotive and industrial coatings in Japan and China; NIPSEA network 6.0% USD 1.99 billion
PPG Automotive OEM, packaging, aerospace and protective coatings across the region 5.5% USD 1.82 billion
AkzoNobel International marine and protective, coil, packaging and wood finishes 4.5% USD 1.49 billion
Kansai Paint Automotive and industrial coatings in Japan, India and Southeast Asia 4.0% USD 1.33 billion
KCC Automotive, marine and industrial coatings in South Korea and China 3.0% USD 995 million
Jotun Marine and protective coatings for Asian yards and offshore steel 3.0% USD 995 million
Axalta Automotive OEM and industrial coatings in China and India 2.5% USD 829 million
Chugoku Marine Paints and Surventis Antifouling for Japanese and Chinese yards; former BASF automotive coatings 3.0% USD 995 million
Other suppliers Hempel, Sherwin-Williams, Asian Paints PPG, Chinese state and private paint makers, and thousands of local formulators 68.5% USD 22.7 billion

All shares are Douglas Insights estimates because suppliers report industrial and decorative paint together. Nippon Paint’s Asia segment sold ¥887.5 billion in 2025, down 2.9%, most of it decorative paint, and higher Chinese automotive sales offset flat Thai output, PCI reported. Scale matters in automotive OEM and marine, where a coating is qualified by the carmaker or shipowner for years; it matters less in general industrial, where local formulators win on price and service. AkzoNobel and Axalta together would hold about 7.0%: shareholders of both approved the merger on 5 August 2026, Axalta announced, but China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) moved the review to its normal procedure and closing is expected in late 2026 or early 2027, with a long-stop date of 18 May 2027, Mergermarket reported on 23 September 2026.

How much do industrial liquid coatings cost per kilogram in Asia Pacific?

Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings sold at an average USD 3.40 a kilogram in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 2.00 for coil primers to more than USD 25 for aerospace topcoats. The average rises 1.35% a year.

Product group Typical realised price per kilogram, 2025 What sets it
Coil primers and backers USD 2.00 to USD 2.80 Polyester and epoxy commodity grades
General industrial and wood USD 2.80 to USD 4.00 Solvent alkyd, acrylic and PU; local competition
Protective and marine USD 3.50 to USD 6.00 Epoxy primers, antifouling biocides, shipowner approvals
Automotive OEM USD 5.00 to USD 9.00 E-coat, basecoat and clearcoat qualified by carmakers
Aerospace and specialty USD 25 to USD 60 Qualified primers and topcoats, small lots

The bands are Douglas Insights estimates from supplier disclosures and trade data. The Asia Pacific average is well below the USD 3.83 we use worldwide, because coil, general industrial and Chinese local brands take a larger share of tonnes. It rises 1.35% a year to about USD 3.89 by 2035 as waterborne and high-solids grades, which cost more per kilogram, replace solvent paint under China’s GB 30981.2-2025 and as marine buyers move to silicone fouling-release coatings.

Which rules shape Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings: China’s GB 30981.2-2025 VOC standard and merger review?

China’s GB 30981.2-2025 standard, published by SAMR on 30 May 2025 and in force since 1 June 2026, shapes Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings most, because it sets VOC limits for 55.0% of the region’s demand.

The standard merges five earlier ones, for wood, vehicle, toy, industrial protective and marine coatings, into one; it limits pigmented waterborne wood coatings to 250 g/L and clear ones to 300 g/L, and sets 150 to 550 g/L for radiation-cured coatings depending on use, REACH24H reported. Fire-retardant and building protective coatings move under industrial coatings management; aerospace, nuclear and military coatings are outside it. For suppliers the effect is a faster shift to waterborne and high-solids products, which raises price per kilogram and favours larger formulators with qualified low-VOC ranges.

Competition rules matter too. SAMR’s review of the AkzoNobel and Axalta merger, reportedly using a narrower definition that splits passenger and commercial vehicle coatings, decides whether the combined group can keep both automotive businesses in China, Mergermarket reported.

What if China’s shipyards slow: where do Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings land in 2035?

The Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings market ends 2035 between USD 44.6 billion and USD 67.1 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 55.6 billion. Chinese shipbuilding and Indian factory growth set the spread.

Case Volume leg Price per kilogram leg 2035 value
Slower 2.40% 0.60% USD 44.6 billion
Base case 3.90% 1.35% USD 55.6 billion
Faster 5.20% 2.00% USD 67.1 billion

In the slower case Chinese new ship orders fall back after the 2025 peak, car exports meet more tariffs and Indian manufacturing grows more slowly than planned. In the faster case the 274.42 million tonne order book is delivered on time, Indian and Vietnamese factory building continues at its 2025 pace and low-VOC rules spread to India and Southeast Asia. One extra point of yearly volume growth adds USD 5.59 billion to 2035 Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings value; one point less removes USD 5.12 billion.

The 5.30% base rate sits above the 3.22% we use for Europe because Asia Pacific adds tonnes from ships, cars and new factories while Europe grows mainly on price.

Douglas Exclusive: the Asia Pacific Hull-and-Body Coatings Ledger

The Asia Pacific Hull-and-Body Coatings Ledger is a Douglas Insights model, an estimate rather than an official register, built from 6 published sources: 3 government and industry statistics releases and 3 regulator and company records of 2025 and 2026.

Date Figure Direction
30 May 2025 GB 30981.2-2025 published; in force 1 June 2026 Low-VOC shift
15 January 2026 China vehicle output 34.531 million; exports more than 7 million Car coatings up
5 February 2026 China ship completions 53.69 million dwt; order book 274.42 million dwt, +31.5% Marine coatings up
15 April 2026 India PV 46.43 lakh, +7.9%; two-wheelers 2.17 crore, +10.7% Indian demand up
5 August 2026 AkzoNobel and Axalta shareholders approve merger Consolidation
23 September 2026 SAMR moves merger to normal review Closing delayed risk

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: China’s year-end 2025 order book equals 5.11 years of its 2025 completions, so most of the hulls Asian yards will paint before 2031 are already on contract. Marine newbuild coatings therefore have five years of visibility that automotive coatings, tied to a market CAAM expects to grow 1% in 2026, do not. We therefore give protective and marine 6.20% a year against 4.60% for automotive, and expect protective and marine to add 25.6% of new value against 14.3% from cars.

How does the methodology turn 9.75 million tonnes into USD 33.2 billion of Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings?

How this report is built

  • Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
  • Eight regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
  • The next scheduled review of this study is April 2027.
  • Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.

Our methodology multiplies 9.75 million tonnes of Asia Pacific industrial liquid coatings in 2025 by an average USD 3.40 a kilogram to reach USD 33.2 billion. Tonnes come from eight country builds of coating use per unit of output.

The model covers 8 countries or sub-regions, 7 end uses and 3 technologies, and uses 112 data points, 21 sourced and 91 modelled. Arithmetic: 9.75 million tonnes x 1,000 x USD 3.40 = USD 33.2 billion; USD 33.2 billion x (1.0390 x 1.0135)^10 = USD 55.6 billion. Tonnes reach 10.1 million in 2026 and 14.3 million in 2035; price reaches USD 3.45 a kilogram in 2026.

Two cross-checks agree. First, the Asia Pacific row of our worldwide model is USD 33.2 billion in 2025 and USD 55.6 billion in 2035, the same totals built top-down. Second, the top nine suppliers’ estimated USD 10.4 billion is 31.5% of the market, consistent with a region where Chinese local brands and thousands of small formulators supply general industrial and wood lines. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our editorial standards explain.
