On 1 January 2026 the European Union’s carbon border adjustment mechanism left its reporting phase and began to apply in full, and aluminium bars, rods and profiles under CN code 7604 are named in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2023/956, so every imported window section, solar frame and battery-tray profile now needs an authorised declarant and, from 2027, certificates for the carbon it carries. Douglas Insights values the aluminum profile market at USD 48.1 billion in 2025 and forecasts USD 80.2 billion by 2035, a compound growth rate of 5.25% a year. The receipt is tonnes times price: about 14.26 million tonnes of finished profile, anodised, powder-coated, thermally broken or fabricated to a system drawing, sold at an average USD 3,370 per tonne. The volume leg adds 3.9% a year as solar frames, battery trays and thermally broken windows take more metal, and the price leg adds 1.3% a year as finishing, fabrication and certified low-carbon billet lift the value of each tonne. The study sits within Douglas Insights coverage of metals and metal products and follows the published Douglas Insights research methodology.

What separates an aluminum profile from a plain extrusion on the press table?

Finishing and fabrication separate them: of the 34.2 million tonnes counted at the press in the Aluminum Extrusion Market report, about 14.26 million tonnes, or 41.7%, leave as finished profile sections sold into a named application. The aluminum profile market values those tonnes at USD 3,370 rather than the USD 2,819 press average, so it counts about USD 40.2 billion of press value plus USD 7.86 billion of anodising, powder coating, thermal-break assembly, cutting and machining added after the press. Mill-finish commodity shapes, rod, bar, tube and busbar stay only in the extrusion report.

By application, the market covers Window and door systems, Curtain wall and facade framing, Solar PV frames and mounting, EV battery trays and automotive structures, Industrial and T-slot framing, Consumer, furniture and electronics profiles, and Rail and transport profiles. By finish, it splits into Powder-coated profiles, Anodised profiles, Thermal-break profiles, Mill-finish fabricated profiles, and PVDF and wood-effect finishes. Assembled walls are sized in the Aluminum Curtain Wall Market report and billet in the Aluminum Metal Market report.

What did the 1 January 2026 carbon border start mean for profiles shipped into Europe?

The start put about 1.1 million tonnes of profile imports into Europe, Douglas Insights estimates, under a regime where only authorised declarants may import more than 50 tonnes a year. Regulation (EU) 2023/956 ran a transitional reporting period from 1 October 2023 to 31 December 2025 and has applied in full since 1 January 2026. For aluminium, only direct emissions are counted, mainly anode and process gases of about 1.5 to 2.0 tonnes of carbon dioxide per tonne of primary-based profile.

The charge starts small because it phases in as free allocation to EU smelters phases out: 2.5% of embedded emissions in 2026, rising to 100% in 2034. Douglas Insights therefore reads the 1 January 2026 date as a paperwork and sourcing event first and a cost event later. European system houses now ask extruders for verified emissions data, and importers from China, the Gulf and India face declaration costs that favour Turkish, Balkan and in-house European supply in the aluminum profile market.

Which trade and carbon rules now sit on an imported aluminum profile?

Three regimes touch about 38% of aluminum profile market value: the EU carbon border charge, US Section 232 duties and anti-dumping orders on Chinese extrusions. The United States raised its Section 232 duty on aluminium articles from 25% to 50% from 4 June 2025, under Proclamation 10947, and Proclamation 11021 of 2 April 2026 kept 50% on the full customs value of aluminium articles while setting 25% for most derivatives. Profiles under heading 7604 therefore pay more at the US border than some assembled goods made from them.

The European Union has applied anti-dumping duties of 21.2% to 32.1% on Chinese aluminium extrusions since 2021, and China removed its export tax rebate on aluminium profiles from 1 December 2024. The US Geological Survey puts US import reliance at 60% of 2025 aluminium consumption, which is why duties pass straight into US profile prices.

What price does a tonne of anodised or thermal-break profile fetch over the metal?

An average tonne of finished profile sold for USD 3,370 in 2025, and Douglas Insights expects about USD 3,835 by 2035. Metal, the exchange price plus a regional premium, is about 70% to 80% of that figure. Anodised profiles average about USD 3,240 per tonne and powder-coated profiles about USD 3,310, while thermal-break profiles reach about USD 4,050 because two coated sections are joined with polyamide strips. PVDF and wood-effect finishes average about USD 3,880.

Regional gaps are wider than finish gaps in the aluminum profile market. A Chinese window profile sold for about USD 3,050 per tonne ex-works in 2025, a European one about USD 4,300 and a US one about USD 5,200, lifted by a Midwest premium that the 50% duty pushed above USD 1,500 per tonne. Contracts pass metal through monthly or quarterly and price conversion and finish separately.

What drives the aluminum profile market beyond windows and doors?

Four forces add about 5.4 points a year to aluminum profile market tonnage, while restraints remove about 1.5 points, leaving 3.9%. Electric vehicles come first. A battery tray uses long, wide, multi-hollow profiles, and a typical battery electric car carries 60 to 110 kg of profile in its tray, sills and crash rails. EV battery trays and automotive structures are worth USD 5.24 billion in 2025 and grow 9.36% a year to USD 12.8 billion by 2035, adding about 1.6 points a year to tonnage. Car makers in China, Europe and the United States now source trays from extruders near their assembly plants, because a finished tray is bulky and costly to ship, which pulls new press and welding capacity into Hungary, Mexico, the southern United States and Anhui.

Solar frames are the second driver. Each gigawatt of crystalline modules needs about 12,000 to 16,000 tonnes of frame profile, and roof and carport mounting adds more. Solar PV frames and mounting grow 6.27% a year, adding about 1.3 points, even as some Chinese makers test steel frames on utility-scale modules. Rooftop and carport mounting in Europe, India and the United States uses more profile per kilowatt than ground-mounted plants, which keeps this segment growing faster than module output.

Thermal performance is the third driver. The EU recast buildings directive sets zero-emission new buildings from 2030, and national codes in Europe, North America and urban China keep lowering window U-values. A thermally broken window uses about 15% more profile by weight than a cold one and sells for about 25% more per tonne, so renovation adds value even when new-build window counts fall. Douglas Insights estimates this adds about 1.4 points a year.

Carbon rules are the fourth driver, and the 1 January 2026 CBAM start is part of it. Buyers of facades and car structures now specify profile with less than 4 tonnes of carbon dioxide per tonne, and recycled billet with 75% or more post-consumer scrap lets extruders meet that figure at a small premium. Douglas Insights estimates low-carbon specifications pull about 1.1 points a year of substitution from steel, PVC and timber.

What holds back the aluminum profile market when housing starts fall?

China’s housing slump is the first restraint, removing about 0.9 points a year from global tonnage: China uses about 43% of the world’s finished profile, and window and curtain wall orders there follow new floor space, which fell again in 2025. Chinese extruders have pushed surplus profile into exports at low prices, which provoked more trade cases.

Trade friction is the second restraint, removing about 0.4 points. The 50% US duty and anti-dumping orders raise costs for US fabricators, some of whom switch to steel or vinyl windows. Substitution is the third, removing about 0.2 points: steel frames for utility-scale solar modules and large one-piece castings for vehicle rear structures both take tonnes from the aluminum profile market.

Which aluminum profile segment carries the value in 2025, and which is gaining?

Window and door systems carry 34.6% of 2025 aluminum profile market value, the largest share, while EV battery trays and automotive structures gain fastest at 9.36% a year.

Segment Share of 2025 value 2025 value Growth to 2035
Window and door systems 34.6% USD 16.6 billion 3.94% a year
Curtain wall and facade framing 17.3% USD 8.31 billion 5.08% a year
Solar PV frames and mounting 14.8% USD 7.11 billion 6.27% a year
EV battery trays and automotive structures 10.9% USD 5.24 billion 9.36% a year
Industrial and T-slot framing 8.7% USD 4.18 billion 4.39% a year
Consumer, furniture and electronics profiles 7.6% USD 3.65 billion 3.48% a year
Rail and transport profiles 6.1% USD 2.93 billion 4.62% a year

Window and door systems are worth USD 16.6 billion, because every building needs openings and system houses sell tested profile sets to thousands of fabricators. Curtain wall and facade framing is worth USD 8.31 billion, driven by towers in India, the Gulf and China. Solar PV frames and mounting are worth USD 7.11 billion, almost all anodised frames made in China. Industrial and T-slot framing is worth USD 4.18 billion, used for machine guards, automation cells and data-centre racks. Consumer, furniture and electronics profiles are worth USD 3.65 billion and grow slowest, at 3.48% a year, as laptop and television volumes flatten. Rail and transport profiles are worth USD 2.93 billion, the wide hollow sections welded into metro and high-speed car bodies.

Is anodising, powder coating or a thermal break worth most on a tonne of profile?

Powder-coated profiles hold 36.4% of aluminum profile market value, USD 17.5 billion in 2025, the largest finish because colour choice suits windows and facades. Anodised profiles take 27.8%, USD 13.4 billion, led by solar frames and electronics. Thermal-break profiles take 21.5%, USD 10.3 billion, on only about 2.55 million tonnes, the most value per tonne. Mill-finish fabricated profiles take 8.1%, USD 3.89 billion, mainly battery trays and T-slot sections machined but not coated, and PVDF and wood-effect finishes take 6.2%, USD 2.98 billion, on premium facades. Finish mix moves the price leg: each point of share that thermal-break profiles gain from plain powder-coated sections lifts the average price per tonne by about USD 7.

Which region frames the most windows and solar modules in aluminum, and what keeps the Gulf climbing?

Asia Pacific holds 57.4% of aluminum profile market value, USD 27.6 billion in 2025, rising to USD 47.4 billion by 2035 at 5.56% a year. China makes most of the world’s solar frames and window profile, while India adds housing, metro cars and module plants fast enough to offset the Chinese slump.

Europe is worth USD 8.46 billion, growing 4.12% a year to USD 12.7 billion, as renovation and thermal-break windows offset weak new building. North America grows from USD 7.64 billion to USD 12.2 billion at 4.81% a year, with prices lifted by the 50% duty and volume by battery and solar plants. Latin America rises from USD 2.07 billion to USD 3.47 billion.

Middle East and Africa is the fastest region, at 6.74% a year from USD 2.31 billion to USD 4.43 billion, because Gulf megaprojects specify thermal-break and PVDF-coated facades and Gulf extruders sit next to low-cost billet from local smelters. Africa is the wildcard: solar mini-grids and urban housing in Nigeria, Kenya and Egypt could add volume if local finishing lines follow.

Which companies turn billet into branded profile systems?

The top three suppliers hold about 16.8% of aluminum profile market value, Douglas Insights estimates, led by Hydro at about 8.6% through Hydro Extrusions and its Wicona and Technal building systems.

Company HQ What its position is built on est. share
Hydro Oslo, Norway Largest press network in Europe and North America, low-carbon billet, building systems brands 8.6%
Guangdong Xingfa Aluminium Foshan, China Window, door and curtain wall profile for Chinese developers, expanding abroad 4.9%
Schüco Bielefeld, Germany System designs sold through fabricator networks in about 80 countries 3.3%
JMA Aluminium Foshan, China Architectural and industrial profile with in-house finishing 3.0%
Constellium Paris, France Crash management systems, battery enclosures and rail profiles 2.7%
China Zhongwang Liaoyang, China Large industrial presses for rail, vehicle and solar profiles 2.1%
Reynaers Aluminium Duffel, Belgium Window and facade systems for European and Middle East projects 1.4%

Kaiser Aluminum, Alumil and Gulf Extrusions compete in their regions. Hydro and Kaiser gained from the 4 June 2025 US duty through their US presses, while Chinese exporters lost US and EU share and turned to Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

How do battery trays and solar frames change what an extruder must master?

Battery trays need presses of 4,000 tonnes or more, profiles up to about 400 mm wide and friction-stir welding, so only about 1 in 20 profile makers can serve them in the aluminum profile market. Solar frames need the opposite: thin anodised sections made in huge runs at conversion margins of about USD 300 to 500 per tonne. Extruders therefore choose a lane, high-precision automotive work with long qualification or high-volume solar work with thin margins.

How large could the aluminum profile market grow by 2035 on three paths?

The base case of 3.9% volume and 1.3% price growth gives USD 80.2 billion in 2035; a slower path of 2.3% and 0.5% gives USD 63.4 billion, and a faster path of 5.4% and 2.0% gives USD 99.1 billion. The slower path assumes Chinese floor space keeps falling to 2030, steel wins utility solar frames and US duties stay at 50%. The faster path assumes EV output doubles and European renovation funding lands on schedule. Each 1-point change in the volume leg moves the 2035 aluminum profile market by about USD 8.06 billion. Published forecasts span 3.9% to 7.2% a year, and the Douglas Insights 5.25% sits inside that range.

Douglas Exclusive: the aluminum profile market landed-value matrix by origin

The landed-value matrix prices one tonne of CN 7604 profile delivered to 2 markets from 6 origins, adding ex-works price, freight, customs duty, EU anti-dumping duty and the CBAM charge at an assumed USD 88 per tonne of carbon dioxide. A Chinese profile lands in the European Union at about USD 4,070 per tonne in 2026, including USD 4.40 of CBAM, against USD 4,340 for European supply; by 2034, when the charge applies in full, the CBAM line reaches USD 176 and the landed figure USD 4,241. A UAE profile lands at USD 3,872 in 2026 and USD 4,018 in 2034, and a Turkish one, inside the customs union, at USD 3,442 and USD 3,519. In the United States, the 50% duty dominates: a Chinese profile lands at USD 4,725 before anti-dumping duties, a UAE one at USD 5,355 and a Canadian one at USD 5,930, against USD 5,240 for US supply. For buyers in the aluminum profile market, the matrix shows the US duty moving landed cost by USD 1,500 to 2,000 per tonne today, while CBAM moves European landed cost by under USD 200 even at full rate in 2034.

Methodology and receipts: how do 14.26 million tonnes add up to USD 48.1 billion?

How this report is built

  • Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
  • Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
  • The next scheduled review of this study is December 2026.
  • Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.

About 14.26 million tonnes at an average USD 3,370 per tonne give USD 48.1 billion in 2025. Douglas Insights built tonnage by application from window, facade, solar, vehicle and rail output in 32 countries, then reconciled it with press capacity, finishing-line counts and the 34.2 million tonnes in the extrusion report. Prices come from system-house lists, fabricator quotes and metal premiums by region. Segment and regional forecasts reconcile exactly to the aluminum profile market total. Value is measured at the first sale to a fabricator, OEM or installer, so glazing, hardware, assembly and site labour are excluded, and profile a system house buys from an extruder is counted once, at the system-house price.
