ABB’s Electrification orders rose 70% to USD 7.67 billion in the third quarter of 2026 while revenue grew 21% to USD 5.42 billion, its results of 20 October 2026 show, the clearest sign yet that the boxes which distribute and control low-voltage power are in short supply. The electric control panel market covers assembled low-voltage panels up to 1,000 volts: industrial control panels for machines and processes, motor control centres, programmable logic controller (PLC) and automation panels, and power distribution and control panels for buildings, plants and data centres. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 11.5 billion in 2025, about 2.80 million panels at an average USD 4,100 each, and at USD 21.7 billion in 2035, a 6.59% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits beside our Substation Automation System Market, Power Frame Type Automatic Transfer Switches Market and Polymer Cable Glands Market reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.

Which electric control panel type earns the most: industrial control panels, motor control centres, PLC panels or distribution panels?

Industrial control panels earn the most, 34.0% of 2025 electric control panel value or about USD 3.90 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Power distribution and control panels grow fastest, 7.6% a year to USD 5.73 billion by 2035.

Panel type Share 2025 Value 2025 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
Industrial control panels (machine and process) 34.0% USD 3.90 billion 5.8% USD 6.86 billion
Motor control centres 24.0% USD 2.76 billion 6.6% USD 5.22 billion
PLC and automation panels 18.0% USD 2.07 billion 6.9% USD 4.03 billion
Power distribution and control panels 24.0% USD 2.76 billion 7.6% USD 5.73 billion

Industrial control panels lead because every packaging line, pump skid, compressor and conveyor needs a cabinet of contactors, overloads, drives and terminals, usually built by one of thousands of local panel shops. In North America most of those shops build to UL 508A, the safety standard for industrial control panels, and Douglas Insights estimates that about 1.15 million industrial control panels were built worldwide in 2025 at an average USD 3,400. Their value grows 5.8% a year to USD 6.86 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Motor control centres, USD 2.76 billion, grow 6.6% a year as water plants, mines and refineries add pumps and fans with variable-speed drives. PLC and automation panels, USD 2.07 billion, grow 6.9% on factory upgrades and the spread of networked I/O. Power distribution and control panels, USD 2.76 billion, grow fastest at 7.6% because data centres, battery plants and electrified buildings buy them by the hundred. Type values for 2035 sum to USD 21.8 billion, 0.49% above the headline.

Where do electric control panels go: manufacturing, data centres, energy and utilities, or buildings?

Manufacturing takes the most, 40.0% of 2025 value or about USD 4.59 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Data centres grow fastest, 11.0% a year from USD 1.95 billion to USD 5.54 billion by 2035.

End use Share 2025 Value 2025 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
Manufacturing and process industries 40.0% USD 4.59 billion 5.0% USD 7.48 billion
Data centres 17.0% USD 1.95 billion 11.0% USD 5.54 billion
Energy, utilities and water 21.0% USD 2.41 billion 6.9% USD 4.70 billion
Commercial buildings and infrastructure 22.0% USD 2.53 billion 5.6% USD 4.36 billion

Manufacturing leads because discrete and process plants hold most of the world’s installed motors and machines. Rockwell Automation, the largest US maker of factory controls, sold USD 8.99 billion in fiscal 2026, up 8%, with its Intelligent Devices segment at USD 4.19 billion, up 11%, its results of 5 November 2026 show. Manufacturing panel value grows 5.0% a year to USD 7.48 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Data centres, USD 1.95 billion, grow 11.0% a year: Schneider Electric said demand in its Data Center and Networks business was “up triple-digit” in the third quarter of 2026, its release of 16 October 2026 states. Energy, utilities and water, USD 2.41 billion, grow 6.9% on substations, solar plants and treatment works, and commercial buildings and infrastructure, USD 2.53 billion, grow 5.6% on heat pumps, lifts and charging. End-use values for 2035 sum to USD 22.1 billion, 1.58% above the headline.

What drives electric control panel demand: data centres, factory investment, grid and renewables, or building electrification?

Electric control panel units rise 4.5% a year in our base case, from about 2.80 million in 2025 to about 4.35 million in 2035. Four drivers add 5.70 points of gross growth; three restraints remove 1.20 points.

Data centre power and cooling: 2.00 points

Data centres are the largest driver, worth 2.00 points. Eaton’s Electrical Americas segment sold a record USD 4.2 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up 22% organically, with twelve-month rolling organic orders up 39%, and Electrical backlog rose 46% with a book-to-bill ratio of 1.2, its results of 3 November 2026 show. Douglas Insights estimates that each megawatt of new data-centre IT load needs about USD 150,000 of low-voltage distribution and control panels, so about 13 gigawatts of builds explain the USD 1.95 billion of 2025 data-centre panel value.

Factory investment and automation: 1.40 points

Factory spending adds 1.40 points. Rockwell guides fiscal 2027 organic sales growth of 6% to 9%, after Software and Control sales rose 18% to USD 2.82 billion in fiscal 2026, its release of 5 November 2026 shows. ABB’s Motion business, which makes drives and motors that sit in motor control centres, grew revenue 11% to USD 2.32 billion in the third quarter of 2026, per its 20 October 2026 results. Douglas Insights estimates that every USD 1 of PLC and drive hardware pulls through about USD 0.45 of panel assembly, wiring and enclosure.

Grid, renewables and utilities: 1.30 points

Grid and renewables add 1.30 points. Schneider’s Energy Management division sold EUR 9.62 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up 18.8% organically, with China and East Asia up 26.1% and North America up 19.9%, its 16 October 2026 release shows. Eaton agreed to buy COL Group, a medium-voltage distribution business, to add European capacity for data-centre and utility customers, its 3 November 2026 release states. Douglas Insights estimates that each 100 MW solar or battery plant uses about 60 low-voltage control and auxiliary panels.

Building electrification: 1.00 point

Buildings add the last 1.00 point. Heat pumps, lift drives, car chargers and building management systems each add a control or distribution panel, and ABB agreed to take a 51% controlling stake in a joint venture with Mitsubishi Electric’s low-voltage power distribution business, for total consideration of about USD 495 million, alongside its 20 October 2026 results. Douglas Insights estimates that an all-electric mid-size office needs about 1.6 times the panel value of a gas-heated one. Summed, 2.00 + 1.40 + 1.30 + 1.00 = 5.70 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.

What holds electric control panel volume back: soft automation orders, component lead times or tariffs?

Three restraints remove 1.20 points a year from electric control panel volume growth: soft automation orders take 0.50 points, component costs and lead times 0.40 points and tariffs 0.30 points.

Soft automation orders are the heaviest drag because machine builders buy most industrial control panels. ABB’s Automation business took orders of USD 2.11 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up only 1%, against 70% growth in Electrification, ABB reported on 20 October 2026, and Rockwell’s fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 sales rose just 1% to USD 2.33 billion, 3% organically, per its 5 November 2026 release. Douglas Insights estimates machine-control panel units grew about 2% in 2026 against about 7.5% for distribution panels.

Component lead times take 0.40 points: when breakers, contactors and copper busbar are on allocation, panel shops finish fewer cabinets than they book, and Eaton’s Electrical Global backlog rose 121% over September 2025, its 3 November 2026 release shows. Tariffs take the last 0.30 points: Rockwell said a customer tariff refund programme cut fourth-quarter growth by about 4 points, per the same Rockwell release, and duties on imported steel enclosures and copper raise US build costs, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Which region buys the most electric control panels, and where does demand grow fastest?

Asia Pacific buys the most electric control panels, USD 4.82 billion or 42.0% of 2025 value, and the Middle East and Africa grow fastest, 7.4% a year from USD 574 million to USD 1.17 billion by 2035.

Region Value 2025 Share 2025 Value 2026 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
Asia Pacific USD 4.82 billion 42.0% USD 5.16 billion 7.0% USD 9.48 billion
North America USD 2.98 billion 26.0% USD 3.19 billion 7.0% USD 5.87 billion
Europe USD 2.53 billion 22.0% USD 2.67 billion 5.6% USD 4.36 billion
Latin America USD 574 million 5.0% USD 609 million 6.1% USD 1.04 billion
Middle East and Africa USD 574 million 5.0% USD 617 million 7.4% USD 1.17 billion

Asia Pacific leads because China, India, Japan and South-East Asia hold most of the world’s factories, and Schneider’s China and East Asia revenue grew 26.1% organically in the third quarter of 2026, its 16 October 2026 release shows. Regional value grows 7.0% a year to USD 9.48 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate, on battery, electronics and data-centre construction.

North America, USD 2.98 billion, also grows 7.0% on data centres and reshored plants; Schneider’s North American sales rose 19.9% organically in the same quarter. Europe, USD 2.53 billion, grows 5.6%, slowed by weak machine building but lifted by grid work, with Schneider’s European sales up 8.6%. Latin America, USD 574 million, grows 6.1% on mining and water, and the Middle East and Africa, USD 574 million, grows 7.4% on Gulf industrial and data-centre projects. Regional values sum to USD 12.2 billion in 2026, 0.07% above the headline, and USD 21.9 billion in 2035, 0.87% above it.

Which companies lead the electric control panel market?

Schneider Electric leads electric control panels with about 12% of 2025 value, Douglas Insights estimates, ahead of ABB and Siemens at about 9% each, Eaton at about 7% and Rockwell Automation at about 5%.

Company Panel lines Latest reported figure Source date
Schneider Electric Prisma and Blokset panels, MCCs, components Q3 2026 revenue EUR 11.46 billion, up 16.9% organic 16 October 2026
ABB MNS motor control centres, distribution panels Electrification orders USD 7.67 billion in Q3 2026, up 70% 20 October 2026
Eaton Switchboards, MCCs, control assemblies Q3 2026 sales USD 8.9 billion, up 28% 3 November 2026
Rockwell Automation Allen-Bradley MCCs, engineered panels FY2026 sales USD 8.99 billion, up 8% 5 November 2026
Siemens Sivacon panels, MCCs Q4 FY2026 results due 12 November 2026 Investor calendar

Schneider has the broadest panel and component range; its group revenue reached EUR 11.46 billion in the third quarter of 2026, with Industrial Automation at EUR 1.85 billion, up 8.1% organically, and it raised its 2026 organic revenue growth target to 12% to 14%, its 16 October 2026 release states. The same release notes Schneider’s agreed purchase of PTC at USD 205 a share, an equity value of about USD 22.6 billion, announced on 5 October 2026. ABB’s Electrification margin reached 25.6% on USD 5.42 billion of quarterly revenue, ABB reported on 20 October 2026.

Eaton’s sales rose 28% to a record USD 8.9 billion in the third quarter of 2026, 19% organically, its 3 November 2026 release shows. Siemens will publish fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 results on 12 November 2026, its investor relations page states. Mitsubishi Electric, Rittal, Legrand, Hager, Larsen and Toubro and thousands of independent panel builders share the remaining 58%, a Douglas Insights estimate.

How much does an electric control panel cost, from a small machine cabinet to a motor control centre?

An electric control panel sells for an average USD 4,100 in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from USD 800 to USD 2,500 for a small machine cabinet to USD 25,000 to USD 60,000 for a multi-section motor control centre line-up.

The price ladder follows ampacity, section count and the share of drives inside. A wall-mounted industrial control panel with a PLC, a few contactors and a 400 mm by 600 mm enclosure costs about USD 1,500 to USD 4,000, and a floor-standing PLC panel with remote I/O about USD 6,000 to USD 15,000, Douglas Insights estimates. Motor control centre sections sell for about USD 6,000 to USD 12,000 each before drives, and data-centre distribution panels for USD 10,000 to USD 40,000.

Average price rises 2.0% a year in the base case, to about USD 5,000 in 2035, because larger distribution panels and drive-heavy motor control centres gain share. Copper, steel and breaker prices are the swing factors: Eaton’s Electrical Americas margin of 29.8% in the third quarter of 2026, per its results, shows that suppliers are passing costs through. One data-centre distribution panel is worth about eight small machine cabinets, a Douglas Insights estimate. Labour is the other large cost: a UL 508A or IEC 61439 panel shop spends about 25 to 60 wiring hours on a typical floor-standing PLC panel, so labour and testing make up about 30% to 40% of the selling price, and shops in India, Mexico and Eastern Europe win export work on that basis, Douglas Insights estimates.

What if data-centre building slows or factory automation rebounds: how large is the electric control panel market in 2035?

The electric control panel market ends 2035 between USD 17.0 billion and USD 27.1 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 21.7 billion. Data-centre construction and factory spending set most of the spread.

Case Unit leg Price leg Revenue rate 2035 value
Slower 3.00% 1.00% 4.03% USD 17.0 billion
Base case 4.50% 2.00% 6.59% USD 21.7 billion
Faster 6.00% 2.80% 8.97% USD 27.1 billion

In the slower case data-centre spending pauses after 2027, machine builders stay weak and copper prices fall, taking 1.5 points off unit growth and 1.0 point off price. In the faster case automation orders recover, grid budgets rise and data-centre builds keep growing at 2026 rates to 2030, adding 1.5 points of units and 0.8 points of price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 2.2 billion to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Live signals sit between base and faster. ABB’s 70% Electrification order growth, Eaton’s 46% Electrical backlog rise and Schneider’s triple-digit data-centre demand point up; ABB’s 1% Automation order growth and Rockwell’s 3% organic fourth quarter point down. The signal to watch is Siemens’s 12 November 2026 report: if its Smart Infrastructure orders match ABB’s pace, Douglas Insights would raise distribution panel growth by about 0.5 points.

Which rules shape electric control panels, from UL 508A to the EU Machinery Regulation?

Three rule sets shape electric control panels: UL 508A and the US National Electrical Code in North America, the IEC 61439 series for low-voltage assemblies, and the EU Machinery Regulation that applies from 20 January 2027.

The design layer differs by region. North American industrial control panels are built and labelled to UL 508A, which sets short-circuit current ratings and wiring rules, while most other countries build distribution and motor control assemblies to IEC 61439-1 and IEC 61439-2, which require design verification of temperature rise, short-circuit withstand and clearances. Douglas Insights estimates that about 60% of world panel value is built to IEC 61439 and about 30% to UL 508A.

The machinery layer is changing. Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 of 14 June 2023 repeals the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, the EUR-Lex text shows, and applies from 20 January 2027, adding cybersecurity and safety-software duties that reach the control panels on every machine sold in the EU. Douglas Insights estimates that compliance work adds about 3% to 5% to the cost of a European machine-control panel in 2027 and 2028.

Douglas Exclusive: the Two-Speed Panel Ledger

The Two-Speed Panel Ledger is a Douglas Insights model of 10 inputs: 9 company records and 1 official record, listed below. It measures how far power-distribution demand is running ahead of machine-control demand inside the same panel market.

Date Input What it moves
14 June 2023 EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 adopted Machine-panel compliance
5 October 2026 Schneider: agreed purchase of PTC Software in automation
16 October 2026 Schneider: Energy Management up 18.8% organic Distribution demand
16 October 2026 Schneider: Industrial Automation up 8.1% organic Machine-control demand
20 October 2026 ABB: Electrification orders up 70% Distribution demand
20 October 2026 ABB: Automation orders up 1% Machine-control demand
20 October 2026 ABB: Mitsubishi Electric low-voltage joint venture Capacity
3 November 2026 Eaton: Electrical backlog up 46% Distribution demand
5 November 2026 Rockwell: Q4 FY2026 sales up 1% Machine-control demand
5 November 2026 Rockwell: FY2027 organic guide 6% to 9% Machine-control recovery

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: Schneider’s Energy Management sales grew 2.3 times as fast as its Industrial Automation sales in the third quarter of 2026, and ABB’s Electrification orders grew 70% against 1% for Automation. Applied to panels, distribution and motor control units, 48% of value, grow about 7.5% in 2026 while machine-control and PLC units, 52%, grow about 2%, giving a blended rise of about 4.6%, close to our 4.5% base-case unit rate.

The ledger changes how to read the next two years. If Rockwell’s 6% to 9% organic guide for fiscal 2027 holds, machine-control panels recover to about 5% growth while distribution panels ease to about 7%, so the blended rate stays near 6% and the market still reaches about USD 13.0 billion in 2027, a Douglas Insights estimate.

How does the methodology turn 2.80 million panels into USD 11.5 billion?

How this report is built

  • Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
  • Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
  • The next scheduled review of this study is May 2027.
  • Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.

Our methodology multiplies about 2.80 million electric control panels built in 2025 by an average USD 4,100 each to reach USD 11.5 billion, then grows units 4.5% a year and price 2.0% a year.

The model covers 4 panel types, 4 end uses and 5 regions, using 62 data points, 21 sourced and 41 modelled. Units come from a regional build: about 1.18 million panels in Asia Pacific, 610,000 in North America, 680,000 in Europe, 160,000 in Latin America and 170,000 in the Middle East and Africa, Douglas Insights estimates drawn from company disclosures and installed motor and building counts. Arithmetic: 2.80 million x USD 4,100 = USD 11.48 billion; USD 11.48 billion x (1.045 x 1.02)^10 = USD 21.7 billion. Units reach about 2.93 million in 2026 and 4.35 million in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, our 12% Schneider share equals about USD 1.38 billion, about 4% of the EUR 32.69 billion Schneider sold in the first nine months of 2026, per its 16 October 2026 release, a plausible share for assembled panels inside a group that mostly sells components and software. Second, our data-centre panel value of USD 1.95 billion at USD 150,000 per megawatt implies about 13 gigawatts of new IT load, in line with the triple-digit data-centre demand growth Schneider reported. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our editorial standards explain.
