A four-person household that replaces a plain electric tank with a heat pump water heater saves about USD 550 a year, according to the ENERGY STAR heat pump water heater fact sheet, and a connected controller running artificial intelligence (AI) software then decides when that heat is made. An AI water heater is a residential or light commercial water heater with built-in connectivity whose controller learns hot-water draws or acts on grid, tariff or leak signals without the owner touching it. The AI water heater market covers six heating technologies, and Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 5.69 billion in 2025: 13.18 million units × USD 431.6 average factory-gate price = USD 5.69 billion. Our model reaches USD 16.5 billion in 2035, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.26% built from a 9.4% unit leg and a 1.7% price leg. Washington’s Department of Commerce filed Washington State Register (WSR) 26-05-066 on 17 February 2026, letting electric storage tanks meet the state’s grid-port law with the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) CTA-2045-B standard from 20 March 2026. The study belongs to our heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) and building energy equipment research and follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.
Which tanks qualify as AI water heaters, and is a Wi-Fi-only heater left out?
AI water heaters are the 13.18 million connected tanks and tankless units shipped in 2025 whose controllers learn draw times or respond to grid, tariff or leak signals on their own. Our scope spans six heating technologies, four connected functions and three buyer groups, valued at factory-gate price without installation labour or utility rebates.
The six technologies are heat pump water heaters, gas tankless and condensing water heaters, electric storage water heaters, instantaneous electric water heaters, gas storage water heaters, and hybrid and solar-assisted water heaters. Connected functions split into usage learning and scheduling, grid signal response, leak and fault detection, and energy and water-use analytics. Buyers are single-family homes, multi-family homes and light commercial buildings such as salons, clinics and small hotels.
Yes, the Wi-Fi-only heater is out, as are retrofit timers and add-on leak sensors, covered in the Smart Home Market study. The Residential Heat Pump Water Heater Market report counts every heat pump tank, connected or not.
How much does a connected AI water heater fetch at the factory gate, from Chinese tanks to EcoCute units?
An AI water heater fetched an average USD 431.6 at the factory gate in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, because 8.3 million low-priced Chinese units sit beside USD 1,550 North American heat pump tanks. That average rises 1.7% a year to about USD 510.8 by 2035, as heat pump units take a larger slice of global shipments.
Realised prices span a tenfold range. Douglas Insights models a Chinese connected electric storage tank at about USD 210 and a Chinese app-controlled gas instantaneous heater at about USD 300. A European connected electric storage tank sits near USD 330, a North American connected resistance tank near USD 520 and a connected gas storage tank near USD 760. Connected gas tankless units average about USD 980 in North America, connected heat pump tanks about USD 1,550, and a Japanese EcoCute heat pump unit linked to a home energy management system (HEMS) about USD 2,100.
Mix, not inflation, drives the price leg. Within one model line, our price checks put the connected version of a tank USD 60 to USD 180 above its plain twin, a premium the household earns back from the bill. ENERGY STAR credits a heat pump water heater with more than USD 5,600 of lifetime savings for a family of four (fact sheet).
Why are utilities, insurers and Chinese trade-in subsidies pushing AI water heater shipments up 9.4% a year?
AI water heater shipments grow 9.4% a year because four forces add about 10.6 points of unit growth and three restraints take back 1.2 points. Chinese trade-in subsidies contribute 3.4 points, the heat pump conversion 3.1 points, utility grid-port programmes 2.9 points and leak-loss prevention by insurers and landlords 1.2 points.
Chinese trade-in subsidies: 3.4 points
China’s consumer goods trade-in programme lists water heaters among eligible appliances from 1 January 2025, paying 15% of the retail price for grade 2 efficiency and up to 20% for grade 1, capped at 2,000 yuan per item, according to the Shenzhen municipal government. Douglas Insights puts China’s connected water heater shipments at about 8.3 million units in 2025. Subsidised replacements favour the mid-range app-controlled models where Haier and Midea fit learning modes as standard, and we hold the subsidy effect at 3.4 points a year before it fades after 2027.
Heat pump conversion: 3.1 points
The US Department of Energy (DOE) standard in the Federal Register moves electric storage tanks between 20 and 120 gallons to heat pump efficiency from 2029. ENERGY STAR heat pump water heater shipments reached 190,000 units in 2023, about 4% of the category, per the ENERGY STAR 2023 unit shipment summary. Heat pump tanks are the most connected technology in our build, with 85% of North American units carrying Wi-Fi or a CTA-2045 port, so each conversion lifts the AI water heater count by roughly one unit in six.
Utility grid-port programmes: 2.9 points
Utilities want water heaters they can steer, and the grid side of that story is covered in our Smart Grid Distribution Automation Market report. Grid signal response carried USD 1.41 billion of 2025 AI water heater value in our model. Port mandates turn an optional feature into a shipped one: every electric storage tank sold into a port-mandate state leaves the factory ready to enrol in a utility programme, adding about 2.9 points a year.
Leak and fault prevention: 1.2 points
A failed tank floods a floor; a connected one sends a phone alert first. Leak and fault detection carried USD 1.17 billion of 2025 AI water heater value, mostly North American tanks with automatic shut-off valves and anode-wear warnings bought by owners and landlords. Insurer discounts and multi-family property managers push this function, worth about 1.2 points a year of unit growth.
Which heating technology leads AI water heater revenue, heat pump tanks or gas tankless units?
Heat pump water heaters lead AI water heater revenue with 33.86% of 2025 value, USD 1.93 billion, because most heat pump tanks ship with Wi-Fi or a grid port and sell for over USD 1,000. They also grow fastest, at 14.41% a year to USD 7.40 billion by 2035.
| Heating technology | Share of 2025 value | 2025 value | Growth a year | 2035 value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heat pump water heaters | 33.86% | USD 1.93 billion | 14.41% | USD 7.40 billion |
| Gas tankless and condensing water heaters | 31.57% | USD 1.80 billion | 8.79% | USD 4.17 billion |
| Electric storage water heaters | 26.54% | USD 1.51 billion | 9.53% | USD 3.75 billion |
| Gas storage water heaters | 3.29% | USD 187.2 million | 5.46% | USD 318.5 million |
| Hybrid and solar-assisted water heaters | 2.58% | USD 146.8 million | 13.95% | USD 541.7 million |
| Instantaneous electric water heaters | 2.16% | USD 122.9 million | 8.37% | USD 274.5 million |
Heat pump water heaters lead at USD 1.93 billion because 85% of North American and 60% of European heat pump tanks in our build are connected, and they grow fastest as the 2029 federal deadline and European heat pump subsidies retire resistance tanks. Gas tankless and condensing water heaters hold USD 1.80 billion, mostly Chinese app-controlled instantaneous heaters, and grow 8.79% a year. Electric storage water heaters take USD 1.51 billion from the largest pool, about 6.1 million connected tanks, at the lowest average price.
Gas storage water heaters hold USD 187.2 million and grow slowest, 5.46% a year, as building electrification shrinks their base. Hybrid and solar-assisted water heaters reach USD 146.8 million and climb 13.95% a year because their controllers choose between solar, heat pump and backup heat. Instantaneous electric water heaters add USD 122.9 million at 8.37% a year; with no storage to shift, learning rather than grid response carries their premium.
Value by connected function
Usage learning and scheduling is the main function on 41.3% of 2025 value, USD 2.35 billion. Grid signal response takes 24.8%, USD 1.41 billion; leak and fault detection 20.6%, USD 1.17 billion; and energy and water-use analytics 13.3%, USD 756.6 million.
How do single-family homes, apartment blocks and light commercial sites split AI water heater spending?
Single-family homes buy 64.7% of AI water heater value, USD 3.68 billion in 2025, because owners pay the energy bill and keep a tank long enough to earn back the connected premium. Multi-family homes take 24.1%, USD 1.37 billion, and light commercial buildings 11.2%, USD 637.1 million, in our 2025 build.
Chinese apartment towers, where app-scheduled gas instantaneous heaters are the default, explain most of the multi-family share. Small hotels and salons pay for remote fault alerts that avoid a closed day.
Where do AI water heater shipments land by region, with Asia Pacific far ahead of North America?
Asia Pacific takes 62.2% of AI water heater value, USD 3.54 billion in 2025, because China alone ships about 8.3 million connected units at low prices. North America follows at USD 1.07 billion and grows fastest, 13.87% a year to USD 3.92 billion by 2035, as heat pump and grid-port rules spread.
Asia Pacific grows 9.93% a year to USD 9.12 billion. Japan adds about 765,000 connected units, mostly EcoCute heat pumps; cumulative EcoCute shipments passed 10 million by the end of March 2025, according to the Energy Conservation Center, Japan.
In North America, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) counted 4.25 million gas and 5.03 million electric residential storage tanks shipped in the US in 2025 (AHRI December 2025 release). Our build treats about 10.6% of the North American tank and tankless base as AI-capable.
Europe holds USD 896.5 million and grows 12.44% a year to USD 2.90 billion, led by connected heat pump tanks. Latin America spends USD 87.5 million, rising 11.37% a year to USD 256.9 million on Brazilian and Mexican gas instantaneous heaters. The Middle East and Africa is the wildcard: USD 98.4 million growing 13.44% a year to USD 347.3 million, helped by Haier’s South African Kwikot unit, which Haier says grew profit about 10% after closing. Country tables sit in the Excel model.
What slows AI water heater uptake when a failed tank is replaced within a day?
Three restraints remove about 1.2 points a year from AI water heater unit growth: emergency replacement 0.5 points, never-connected units 0.4 points and the end of the US heat pump tax credit 0.3 points. Without them, connected volume would compound at 10.6% a year rather than the 9.4% in our base case.
Most tanks are replaced on failure, from the installer’s van. With a connected premium of USD 60 to USD 180 over the plain twin, the cheaper tank usually wins a same-day swap. That costs 0.5 points.
A Wi-Fi tank that never joins a home network cannot learn or follow grid signals. Douglas Insights assumes about 30% of Wi-Fi-capable units shipped in 2025 never connected, excludes them from the 13.18 million count and takes 0.4 points off growth for the same drop-off ahead.
The Internal Revenue Service lists the energy efficient home improvement credit, up to USD 2,000 a year for a heat pump water heater, only for property placed in service from 1 January 2023 and before 31 December 2025. Its expiry trims about 0.3 points from US heat pump volumes in 2026 to 2028.
Which manufacturers sell the most AI water heaters, and how far ahead is Haier?
Haier holds about 13.7% share of 2025 AI water heater revenue, Douglas Insights estimates, and the top three of Haier, Midea and A. O. Smith about 30.9%. Scale in China drives the order: Haier’s 2025 annual results claim 32.5% of Chinese water heater sales, inside group revenue of 302.35 billion yuan.
| Company | What its AI water heater position rests on | Est. share of 2025 value |
|---|---|---|
| Haier Smart Home | Chinese smart electric and gas heaters, GE Appliances in the US, Kwikot in South Africa | 13.7% |
| Midea Group | App-controlled electric, gas and heat pump heaters in China | 9.4% |
| A. O. Smith | Connected North American tanks with leak shut-off, plus China | 7.8% |
| Rheem | EcoNet-connected tanks, heat pumps and tankless units | 5.9% |
| Rinnai | Connected gas tankless units with the Control-R app | 4.6% |
| Ariston | Wi-Fi electric and heat pump tanks in Europe | 3.8% |
| Panasonic | EcoCute heat pump units with home energy management links | 3.1% |
| Bosch Home Comfort | Connected heat pump and gas water heaters | 2.6% |
| Vanward | Smart gas instantaneous heaters in China | 2.4% |
| Bradford White | Grid-port electric tanks sold through wholesalers | 2.1% |
A. O. Smith reported 2025 net sales of USD 3.83 billion, USD 2.98 billion of it from its North America segment and about 18% from China, in its annual report on Form 10-K; it also completed the USD 470 million purchase of Leonard Valve in January 2026. Ariston reported 2025 revenue of 2.71 billion euros on 3 March 2026 (results release), and its analyst presentation describes a Lennox distribution deal to push its water heating range into North America.
Which efficiency rules and grid-port laws decide what an AI water heater must carry?
Rules in North America and Europe reach 34.6% of 2025 AI water heater value, the share sold in those two regions. Washington’s grid-port law, the federal 2029 heat pump standard and European ecodesign smart-control credits decide whether a connected controller ships by mandate or by choice.
The Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 19.260.080 bars sale of electric storage water heaters manufactured on or after 1 January 2021 without a modular demand response communications port meeting the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) CTA-2045-A standard, and bars utilities from altering a customer’s electricity or water use without written consent. Commerce proposed an update on 2 December 2025 and filed the final rule on 17 February 2026 (WSR 26-05-066), accepting the February 2021 CTA-2045-B version from 20 March 2026.
The DOE consumer water heater rule in the Federal Register requires heat pump efficiency for most electric storage tanks from 6 May 2029 and estimates USD 2.62 billion a year of equipment costs against USD 5.66 billion of operating savings. A separate December 2024 rule for gas-fired instantaneous water heaters was withdrawn on 20 May 2025 after a Congressional Review Act resolution, per the Federal Register notice, leaving tankless efficiency levels where they were.
In Europe, Commission Regulation (EU) No 814/2013 of 2 August 2013 sets ecodesign requirements for water heaters and defines a smart control factor that credits controllers adapting heat to household use.
How do utility load-shifting programmes turn an AI water heater into a thermal battery?
An enrolled AI water heater works as a thermal battery: Bonneville Power Administration research put the storage at 300 megawatts if 26% of Oregon and Washington electric water heaters responded to grid signals. Douglas Insights values grid signal response at USD 1.41 billion in 2025, 24.8% of the market.
The trial behind that figure, published on 28 November 2018 and described by the Bonneville Power Administration, ran 277 participants across eight Northwest utilities and found tanks were adjusted hundreds of times a year to follow renewable output. It centred on the CTA-2045 port that Washington later wrote into law.
Older load-control schemes are large too. Great River Energy in Minnesota says more than 200,000 cooperative members take part in its demand response programmes, peak-shave water heating among them.
What would the AI water heater market reach by 2035 if the 2029 heat pump deadline holds or slips?
Our base case reaches USD 16.5 billion in 2035 on a 9.4% unit leg and a 1.7% price leg for AI water heaters. A slower path, with 6.6% and 0.9% legs, ends near USD 11.8 billion; a faster one, with 12.1% and 2.4% legs, lands near USD 22.6 billion.
The slower case assumes the 2029 heat pump date in the DOE rule slips, China’s trade-in money ends early and more Wi-Fi tanks stay offline. The faster case assumes three or more states copy the CTA-2045-B port rule Washington filed on 17 February 2026 (WSR 26-05-066), European dynamic tariffs spread and insurers start to require leak valves.
Volume matters most. A unit leg one point lower leaves about USD 15.1 billion in 2035; one point higher gives about USD 18.1 billion. Outside forecasts we read for connected water heaters span 9.2% to 24.2% a year, and our 11.26% sits near the middle of the four whole-market figures because app-switch-only tanks are excluded.
Douglas Exclusive: the AI water heater utility-tariff matrix
The AI water heater utility-tariff matrix is a Douglas Insights model, not an official register or a utility rate filing. It is built from 11 inputs: three annual electricity-use profiles, three shiftable-load shares, one learning-saving rate of 6%, one base tariff of USD 0.17 per kilowatt-hour and three peak-to-off-peak price spreads.
| Tariff design (spread per kilowatt-hour) | Connected resistance tank, 4,500 kilowatt-hours, 80% shiftable | Connected heat pump tank, 1,300 kilowatt-hours, 70% shiftable | Hybrid or solar-assisted tank, 2,000 kilowatt-hours, 50% shiftable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat rate, learning only (USD 0) | USD 46 | USD 13 | USD 20 |
| Midday solar-soak (USD 0.08) | USD 334 | USD 86 | USD 100 |
| Two-period time-of-use (USD 0.10) | USD 406 | USD 104 | USD 120 |
| Day-ahead dynamic (USD 0.14) | USD 550 | USD 141 | USD 160 |
Each cell is the yearly saving from smart control alone: learning savings on the whole bill plus the shiftable share moved across the price spread. The finding is blunt. A connected resistance tank on a dynamic tariff saves about USD 550 a year, the same figure ENERGY STAR gives for switching to a heat pump. A connected heat pump tank gains only USD 13 to USD 141, because it already uses so little power.
For the AI water heater market, a USD 60 to USD 180 connected premium pays back inside one year on a resistance tank under any time-varying tariff in the 12-cell matrix. Heat pump buyers pay for learning and leak alerts instead.
Which methodology turns AHRI tank shipments and EcoCute counts into an AI water heater total?
How this report is built
- Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
- Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
- The next scheduled review of this study is December 2026.
- Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.
Douglas Insights counts 13.18 million AI water heaters in 2025 from 25 region-by-technology cells, each base shipments times a connected share times a factory-gate price. The product is 13.18 million units × USD 431.6 = USD 5.69 billion, with the US, Canada, China and Japan modelled separately and three regional blocks for the rest.
Inputs: AHRI’s 4.25 million gas and 5.03 million electric US storage tanks for 2025 (AHRI), 240,000 US heat pump tanks and 1.0 million tankless units, scaled by 1.09 for Canada. China uses 18 million electric storage and 14 million gas instantaneous heaters at 22% and 25% connected shares; Japan 700,000 EcoCute units at 45% HEMS-linked. These are Douglas Insights assumptions.
Cross-check one: North American AI water heater value of USD 1.07 billion equals 10.7% of the roughly USD 10 billion US wholesale water heater market cited in Ariston’s March 2026 analyst presentation, close to our 10.6% connected unit share. Cross-check two: outside 2025 estimates of USD 4.8 billion and USD 6.47 billion bracket our USD 5.69 billion. Forward, 13.18 million units growing 9.4% a year reach 32.37 million in 2035 at USD 510.8 each, or USD 16.5 billion.

Questions buyers ask
What does one AI water heater sell for at the factory gate?
USD 431.6 on average in 2025, from about USD 210 for a Chinese connected electric tank to about USD 2,100 for a Japanese EcoCute heat pump unit, rising to about USD 510.8 by 2035.
How many AI water heaters shipped worldwide in 2025?
13.18 million units, worth USD 5.69 billion at an average factory-gate price of USD 431.6, growing to 32.37 million units and USD 16.5 billion by 2035.
What share of AI water heater value comes from heat pump tanks?
33.86% in 2025, USD 1.93 billion, and heat pump water heaters grow 14.41% a year to USD 7.40 billion by 2035 as the 2029 US standard converts resistance tanks.
Why does North America outgrow Asia Pacific in AI water heaters?
13.87% a year against 9.93%, because the federal heat pump standard and Washington's grid-port law push connected tanks, while Asia Pacific already holds 62.2% of value on low-priced Chinese units.
What did Washington's February 2026 rule change for grid-ready tanks?
20 March 2026 is when WSR 26-05-066 took effect, letting electric storage water heaters meet the state's port law with CTA-2045-B as well as CTA-2045-A.
Which brand sells the most AI water heaters?
About 13.7% of 2025 revenue goes to Haier, Douglas Insights estimates, and the top three of Haier, Midea and A. O. Smith hold about 30.9%.
How much can a connected tank save on a dynamic electricity tariff?
About USD 550 a year for a resistance tank in the Douglas Insights utility-tariff matrix, against USD 141 for a connected heat pump tank that already uses far less power.
What would a slower AI water heater path look like by 2035?
USD 11.8 billion, on 6.6% unit growth and 0.9% price growth, if the 2029 heat pump date slips and China's trade-in money ends early; the faster case reaches USD 22.6 billion.
