The NHS Drug Tariff price of a 7.5 cm x 4.5 m crepe bandage BP rose to 158p from 1 June 2026, up from 157p, and the 10 cm size to 207p from 204p, the NHS Business Services Authority dictionary of medicines and devices shows, while the World Bank’s Cotton A Index climbed from USD 1.73 a kilogram in June 2025 to USD 2.11 in August 2026, its Pink Sheet monthly data show. The crepe bandage market covers woven cotton crepe, elastic cotton-elastane or polyamide crepe and cohesive or high-compression crepe bandages used for sprains, strains, dressing retention, light support and compression. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 1.32 billion in 2025, about 2.40 billion rolls at an average first-sale price of USD 0.55, and at USD 2.12 billion in 2035, a 4.85% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits in our wound care coverage, beside the Advanced Medical Dressings Market, Orthopedic Splints and Casts Market and Wound Debridement Market reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.

Which crepe bandage type earns the most: cotton, elastic or cohesive crepe?

Cotton crepe bandages earn the most, 44.0% of 2025 value or about USD 581 million, Douglas Insights estimates. Cohesive and high-compression crepe grows fastest, 6.4% a year to USD 393 million by 2035.

Bandage type Share 2025 Value 2025 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
Cotton crepe 44.0% USD 581 million 3.9% USD 852 million
Elastic crepe (cotton with elastane or polyamide) 40.0% USD 528 million 5.3% USD 885 million
Cohesive and high-compression crepe 16.0% USD 211 million 6.4% USD 393 million

Cotton crepe leads because it is the cheapest woven support bandage in hospital formularies and pharmacy aisles across Asia, Africa and Latin America, and it is still a standard prescription item in England. The NHS lists cotton crepe bandage BP 1988 in the 7.5 cm x 4.5 m size at 354p from 1 June 2026, the NHSBSA entry shows, more than twice the 158p of the standard crepe bandage BP. Cotton crepe value grows 3.9% a year to USD 852 million, held back by slow volume growth in mature hospital systems, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Elastic crepe, USD 528 million, grows 5.3% a year to USD 885 million because blended cotton and elastane bandages recover their stretch after washing and give more even support for sports injuries. Tynor, which sells the TynoCrepe range, lists a 10 cm x 4 m cotton crepe bandage at Rs 270 against a maximum retail price of Rs 318 on Tata 1mg, a sign that branded products command a premium in Indian retail. Cohesive and high-compression crepe, USD 211 million, grows fastest at 6.4% as venous leg ulcer and lymphoedema clinics adopt multi-layer systems; Essity expanded its JOBST Elvarex Soft compression range with 5 new models in the third quarter of 2026, its interim report of 22 October 2026 states. Type values for 2035 sum to USD 2.13 billion, 0.44% above the headline.

Where are crepe bandages sold: hospitals, retail pharmacies or online stores?

Hospitals and clinics buy the most crepe bandages, 46.0% of 2025 value or about USD 607 million, Douglas Insights estimates. Online stores grow fastest, 7.6% a year to USD 302 million by 2035.

Channel Share 2025 Value 2025 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
Hospitals and clinics 46.0% USD 607 million 4.4% USD 934 million
Retail pharmacies 34.0% USD 449 million 4.6% USD 704 million
Online stores 11.0% USD 145 million 7.6% USD 302 million
Sports, institutional and other 9.0% USD 119 million 4.9% USD 192 million

Hospitals lead because emergency departments, fracture clinics and wards use crepe bandages to hold dressings and splints in place, often several rolls per patient. Medline, a large US maker and distributor of hospital consumables, grew net sales 11.5% to USD 28.4 billion in 2025, with organic growth of 10.5%, its results release of 25 February 2026 shows. Cardinal Health’s Global Medical Products and Distribution segment grew 2% to USD 3.2 billion in the first quarter of its 2026 fiscal year, its release of 30 October 2025 states.

Retail pharmacies, USD 449 million, grow 4.6% a year as households keep a bandage in the first-aid box. Online stores, USD 145 million, grow fastest because marketplaces such as Tata 1mg in India sell branded rolls with discounts of about 15%, as the Tynor listing shows. Sports teams, schools, the military and other institutional buyers account for USD 119 million and grow 4.9%. Channel values for 2035 sum to USD 2.13 billion, 0.54% above the headline.

What drives crepe bandage demand: falls in older people, sports injuries or wider access in Asia?

Crepe bandage volume rises 3.2% a year in our base case, from about 2.40 billion rolls in 2025 to about 3.29 billion in 2035. Four drivers add 4.20 points of gross growth; restraints remove 1.00 point.

Ageing populations and falls: 1.30 points

Older patients are the largest driver, worth 1.30 points. About 842,000 people died from falls worldwide in 2023, and people aged 60 and over accounted for about 71% of those deaths, the World Health Organization’s falls fact sheet updated on 21 October 2026 states. The number of people aged 80 and over is projected to reach 265 million by the mid-2030s, outnumbering infants, the United Nations’ World Population Prospects 2024 key messages show. Douglas Insights estimates each non-fatal fall treated in a clinic uses 2 to 4 rolls of crepe or conforming bandage for support and dressing retention.

Sports and musculoskeletal injuries: 1.00 point

Sprains and strains add 1.00 point. US emergency departments treated about 7.4 million ankle sprains between 2010 and 2024, an incidence of 1.53 per 1,000 person-years, with the highest rate, 2.60, among people aged 15 to 19 and 33.2% of cases occurring during athletics, a study in Orthopedics published in late 2025 found. Most sprains are treated outside the emergency department, so Douglas Insights estimates total global sprain and strain episodes needing a support bandage at more than 300 million a year.

Low-cost Asian production and wider access: 1.10 points

Supply from China and India adds 1.10 points by putting cheap rolls into emerging-market pharmacies. China exported USD 1.31 billion of goods under HS 300590, the customs line for non-adhesive bandages and dressings, in 2025, up from USD 1.19 billion in 2023, UN Comtrade data show, while India’s exports reached USD 66.0 million. Kedaara Capital agreed to invest USD 200 million in Tynor Orthotics, which sells in more than 60 countries, ThePrint reported on 26 August 2026. Douglas Insights estimates crepe bandages make up about 9% of China’s HS 300590 export value.

Hospital wound care spending: 0.80 points

Wider wound care budgets add the last 0.80 points because crepe bandages are the retention layer over many dressings. Smith+Nephew’s Advanced Wound Management revenue grew 5.6% on an underlying basis to USD 1.79 billion in 2025, its results of 2 March 2026 show, and Mölnlycke’s Wound Care division grew 6.5% to EUR 1.27 billion, its annual report of 1 April 2026 states. Summed, 1.30 + 1.00 + 1.10 + 0.80 = 4.20 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.

What holds crepe bandage volume back: substitutes or fewer emergency sprain visits?

Two restraints remove 1.00 point a year from crepe bandage volume growth: substitution by tubular, cohesive and kinesiology products takes 0.55 points, and falling emergency sprain visits in rich countries take 0.45 points.

Substitution is the heavier drag because clinicians increasingly reach for tubular elastic supports, ankle braces and taping for sprains, and for multi-layer compression kits for leg ulcers. Tynor Orthotics, for example, sells crepe bandages under an orthotics brand, the 26 August 2026 report on its funding shows. Douglas Insights estimates one in eight crepe rolls once used for ankle sprains in Europe and North America has moved to a brace or tape since 2015.

Fewer emergency visits take 0.45 points. The US incidence of emergency department ankle sprains fell from 2.12 per 1,000 person-years in 2010 to 1.19 in 2024, the 2025 Orthopedics study shows, against 2.15 in 2002 to 2006 in an earlier study in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Douglas Insights reads the decline as a shift of minor injuries to urgent care and pharmacies, which use fewer rolls per patient.

Which region buys the most crepe bandages, and where does demand grow fastest?

Asia Pacific buys the most crepe bandages, USD 449 million or 34.0% of 2025 value, led by China and India. The Middle East and Africa grow fastest, 6.0% a year to USD 166 million by 2035.

Region Value 2025 Share 2025 Value 2026 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
Asia Pacific USD 449 million 34.0% USD 475 million 5.9% USD 796 million
Europe USD 356 million 27.0% USD 370 million 3.8% USD 518 million
North America USD 317 million 24.0% USD 330 million 4.3% USD 483 million
Latin America USD 106 million 8.0% USD 111 million 5.5% USD 180 million
Middle East and Africa USD 92 million 7.0% USD 98 million 6.0% USD 166 million

Asia Pacific leads on population and on local manufacturing. Winner Medical, a Shenzhen maker of cotton medical consumables, grew 2025 revenue 21.96% to CNY 10.95 billion, a summary of its 21 April 2026 annual report shows, and Zhende Medical reported 2025 revenue of about CNY 4.33 billion, market data show. Regional value grows 5.9% a year to USD 796 million as Indian and Southeast Asian pharmacy chains expand.

Europe, USD 356 million, grows 3.8% on regulated prices and NHS prescribing. North America, USD 317 million, grows 4.3%; the United States exported USD 587 million of HS 300590 goods in 2025, UN Comtrade data show, and Germany USD 455 million. Latin America, USD 106 million, grows 5.5%, and the Middle East and Africa, USD 92 million, grow fastest as hospital capacity expands in the Gulf and East Africa. Regional values sum to USD 1.39 billion in 2026 and USD 2.14 billion in 2035, 1.05% above the headline.

Which companies lead the crepe bandage market?

Paul Hartmann and Essity lead crepe bandages with about 6% and 5% of 2025 value, Douglas Insights estimates, ahead of Lohmann & Rauscher at about 5%. The top five, adding Winner Medical and Medline, hold about 24%.

Company Bandage position Latest reported figure Source date
Paul Hartmann Crepe, elastic and compression bandages 2025 sales EUR 2.45 billion; Wound Care EUR 624 million 19 March 2026
Essity (BSN medical, Leukoplast, JOBST) Bandages and compression Health and Medical 2025 SEK 27.47 billion 2 March 2026
Lohmann & Rauscher Rosidal, Mollelast and crepe bandages German entity 2025 sales EUR 415 million FY2025 accounts
Winner Medical Cotton medical consumables 2025 revenue CNY 10.95 billion, up 21.96% 21 April 2026
Medline Hospital consumables supply 2025 net sales USD 28.4 billion, up 11.5% 25 February 2026
Zhende, Tynor, Cardinal Health, Solventum Regional and hospital supply Tynor USD 200 million investment 26 August 2026

Hartmann is a leading European maker. Its 2025 group sales reached EUR 2.45 billion with organic growth of 2.2% and adjusted EBITDA of EUR 276.9 million, an 11.3% margin, and its Wound Care segment grew 2.6% organically to EUR 623.6 million, its release of 19 March 2026 shows; the company said US tariffs had a dampening effect on earnings. Essity’s Health and Medical business area had 2025 sales of SEK 27.47 billion with organic growth of 1.0%, and growth was especially good in compression therapy and wound care, its annual report of 2 March 2026 states.

Lohmann & Rauscher’s German operating company grew sales to EUR 414.7 million in 2025 from EUR 402.5 million, its audited accounts show. Solventum’s MedSurg segment, USD 4.82 billion in 2025, focuses on advanced dressings, its results of 26 February 2026 show. Hundreds of Chinese, Indian and Pakistani converters share the remaining 76%, a Douglas Insights estimate.

How much does a crepe bandage cost, from a Chinese export roll to an NHS prescription?

A crepe bandage sells for an average USD 0.55 at first sale in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 0.15 for a Chinese export roll to about USD 2.00 for an NHS-tariff bandage in England.

The price ladder follows brand, width and market. The NHS reimburses 158p for a 7.5 cm x 4.5 m crepe bandage BP and 207p for the 10 cm size, the NHSBSA tariff entries in force from 1 June 2026 show, about USD 2.01 and USD 2.63 at a Douglas Insights rate of USD 1.27 per pound. India’s branded retail price of Rs 270 for a 10 cm Tynor roll on Tata 1mg is about USD 3.05. China’s HS 300590 exports averaged about USD 6.14 per kilogram in 2025, from USD 1.31 billion over 213.5 million kilograms, UN Comtrade data show, and Douglas Insights estimates a standard roll weighs 25 to 40 grams.

Average price rises 1.6% a year in the base case, to about USD 0.645 in 2035, as cotton costs climb and elastic and cohesive products gain share. The Cotton A Index averaged USD 2.00 to USD 2.11 a kilogram between August and October 2026, about 20% to 25% above a year earlier, the World Bank data show. Tariff lists move more slowly: the 2026 NHS rise was 0.6% for the 7.5 cm size and 1.5% for the 10 cm size.

What if older-patient demand slows or online sales surge: how large is the crepe bandage market in 2035?

The crepe bandage market ends 2035 between USD 1.74 billion and USD 2.52 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 2.12 billion. Substitution by braces and cotton costs set most of the spread.

Case Volume leg Price leg Revenue rate 2035 value
Slower 2.00% 0.80% 2.82% USD 1.74 billion
Base case 3.20% 1.60% 4.85% USD 2.12 billion
Faster 4.30% 2.30% 6.70% USD 2.52 billion

In the slower case braces and tapes take another 1.2 points of volume in rich countries, and cotton prices fall back so tariffs stay flat, removing 0.8 points of price. In the faster case Indian and African pharmacy chains double their stock of branded crepe and cohesive bandages, adding 1.1 points of volume, and cotton stays above USD 2.00 a kilogram, adding 0.7 points of price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 211 million to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Live signals sit near the base case. Hartmann’s 2.6% organic Wound Care growth in 2025 and Essity’s 1.6% organic Health and Medical growth over the first nine months of 2026 point to steady Western demand; Winner Medical’s 21.96% revenue growth and the Tynor funding point up. The signal to watch is the next NHS tariff round: a rise of more than 3% for crepe bandage BP in 2027 would show cotton costs passing through, and would move us toward the faster case. A second signal is China’s HS 300590 exports: if they pass USD 1.40 billion in 2026, Douglas Insights estimates emerging-market volume is growing about 0.5 points a year faster than the base case.

Which rules shape crepe bandages, from FDA Class I to the EU MDR and India’s licensing regime?

Three rule sets shape crepe bandages: low-risk device classification in the United States and the European Union, India’s medical device licensing regime, and reimbursement lists such as the NHS Drug Tariff that set prices.

The classification layer is light. The US Food and Drug Administration classes the elastic bandage under 21 CFR 880.5075 as a Class I device exempt from premarket notification, with only record and complaint-file duties under the quality system rules. In the European Union, bandages that act as a mechanical barrier, compress or absorb exudate fall in Class I under Annex VIII Rule 4 of the Medical Device Regulation (EU) 2017/745. Self-certified Class I devices had to meet the regulation from 26 May 2021, and the extension in Regulation (EU) 2023/607, which moves other legacy devices to 31 December 2027 or 2028, does not help them, the European Commission’s question-and-answer note explains.

The licensing layer matters in India. Class A and B non-notified medical devices entered the licensing regime of the Medical Devices Rules 2017 from 1 October 2022 under notification G.S.R. 102(E), Medical Dialogues reported, which Douglas Insights reads as raising compliance costs for small converters. In England the NHS Drug Tariff Part IXA fixes the reimbursement price for each crepe bandage BP size and changes it on set dates such as 1 June 2026.

Douglas Exclusive: the Crepe Cotton Pass-Through Gap

The Crepe Cotton Pass-Through Gap is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 inputs: 5 company reports, 6 official records and 1 medical study, listed below. It measures how far bandage prices lag raw cotton costs.

Date Input What it moves
June 2025 World Bank: Cotton A Index USD 1.73/kg Cost baseline
1 June 2025 NHSBSA: crepe bandage BP 7.5 cm at 157p Price baseline
Late 2025 Orthopedics: 7.4 million US ED ankle sprains Sprain volume
25 February 2026 Medline: 2025 sales USD 28.4 billion Hospital demand
26 February 2026 Solventum: MedSurg USD 4.82 billion Advanced wound care
2 March 2026 Essity: Health and Medical SEK 27.47 billion European demand
19 March 2026 Hartmann: Wound Care EUR 624 million European demand
21 April 2026 Winner Medical: revenue up 21.96% Asian supply
1 June 2026 NHSBSA: 158p and 207p Tariff price
August 2026 World Bank: Cotton A Index USD 2.11/kg Cost peak
21 October 2026 WHO: 842,000 fall deaths in 2023 Older-patient demand
2025 data UN Comtrade: China HS 300590 USD 1.31 billion Export price per kg

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: cotton rose about 22.0% between June 2025 and August 2026, from USD 1.73 to USD 2.11 a kilogram, while the NHS tariff for the 7.5 cm crepe bandage BP rose 0.6% and the 10 cm size 1.5%. With cotton yarn at about 35% to 40% of the ex-factory cost of a cotton crepe roll, input costs rose about 8%, so the pass-through gap is about 6.5 to 7.5 points. Converters absorbed most of the rise.

The gap changes how to read the market. A gap of more than 5 points rarely lasts more than two tariff rounds, so Douglas Insights expects price growth above the 1.6% base in 2027 and 2028, then a return toward the base as cotton eases. Value growth in the near term therefore rests more on price than on volume.

How does the methodology turn 2.40 billion rolls into USD 1.32 billion?

How this report is built

  • Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
  • Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
  • The next scheduled review of this study is May 2027.
  • Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.

Our methodology multiplies about 2.40 billion crepe bandage rolls sold in 2025 by an average first-sale price of USD 0.55 to reach USD 1.32 billion, then grows volume 3.2% a year and price 1.6% a year.

The model covers 3 bandage types, 4 channels and 5 regions, using 48 data points, 18 sourced and 30 modelled. Volume comes from a regional build: about 1.05 billion rolls in Asia Pacific, 460 million in Europe, 330 million in North America, 290 million in Latin America and 270 million in the Middle East and Africa, Douglas Insights estimates drawn from injury, fall and hospital-bed data. Arithmetic: 2.40 billion x USD 0.55 = USD 1.32 billion; USD 1.32 billion x (1.032 x 1.016)^10 = USD 2.12 billion. Volume reaches about 2.48 billion rolls in 2026 and 3.29 billion in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, if crepe bandages are about 9% of China’s USD 1.31 billion of HS 300590 exports, they are worth about USD 118 million at export prices, consistent with China supplying roughly a quarter of world volume at low prices. Second, our 6% Hartmann share implies about USD 79 million of crepe and elastic bandage sales, about 11% of its EUR 624 million Wound Care segment at a Douglas Insights rate of USD 1.16 per euro. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our editorial standards explain.
