Verisure ended 2025 with 6,171,388 alarm customers, up from 5,611,685 a year earlier, and earned EUR 3.34 billion of revenue in Europe at an average EUR 46.6 a month per customer, according to its fourth-quarter report of 12 February 2026; yet the same report puts monitored-alarm penetration below 4% across most of Europe. The Europe home security market covers what households spend to protect their homes: professionally monitored alarm services, alarm hardware and installation, consumer video cameras and doorbells, self-monitored smart security systems, smart locks and access control, and connected smoke, fire and leak sensors. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 18.0 billion in 2025, from 235 million households at USD 76.60 of home security spend each, and at USD 33.5 billion in 2035, a revenue CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 6.42%. The study sits in our smart home and IoT devices coverage and every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.
Which Europe home security segment makes the money: monitored alarms, cameras, locks or DIY kits?
Professionally monitored alarm services make the money in Europe home security: USD 7.56 billion, 42.0% of 2025 value, because a monthly fee recurs for years. Smart locks and access control grow fastest, 8.80% a year.
| Europe home security segment | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Professionally monitored alarm services | 42.0% | USD 7.56 billion | 7.00% | USD 14.9 billion |
| Consumer video cameras and doorbells | 20.0% | USD 3.60 billion | 6.20% | USD 6.57 billion |
| Alarm hardware and installation | 14.0% | USD 2.52 billion | 3.00% | USD 3.39 billion |
| Self-monitored smart security systems | 10.0% | USD 1.80 billion | 7.80% | USD 3.81 billion |
| Smart locks and access control | 9.0% | USD 1.62 billion | 8.80% | USD 3.77 billion |
| Connected smoke, fire and leak sensors | 5.0% | USD 900 million | 4.20% | USD 1.36 billion |
Monitored alarm services, USD 7.56 billion, lead because a European household that signs a monitoring contract pays every month and rarely leaves: Verisure reported a 7.4% annual attrition rate for 2025, so the average customer stays well over a decade. The segment grows 7.00% a year to USD 14.9 billion as penetration rises from low levels. Consumer video cameras and doorbells, USD 3.60 billion, are the second pool, sold through retail and online and increasingly paired with cloud video plans; the hardware story is told in our Smart Home Security Cameras Market report.
Alarm hardware and installation, USD 2.52 billion, covers systems bought outright through installers, and grows only 3.00% a year because buyers prefer subscriptions that bundle equipment. Self-monitored smart security systems, USD 1.80 billion, grow 7.80% a year as renters and younger owners pick app-based kits. Smart locks and access control, USD 1.62 billion, grow fastest because keyless entry now ships with video doorbells and door stations, described in our Door Phone Market report. Connected smoke, fire and leak sensors, USD 900 million, grow 4.20% a year. Segment values for 2035 sum to USD 33.8 billion, 0.65% above the headline.
Why are monitoring subscriptions and smart locks driving Europe home security demand?
Spend per household drives Europe home security: it rises 6.00% a year, from USD 76.60 in 2025 to USD 137.18 in 2035, while households grow only 0.40%. Four drivers add 6.40 points to spend.
The household base moves slowly. Douglas Insights counts 235 million households across Europe in 2025, rising to about 245 million in 2035, so new homes add little. The growth comes from more households buying security and from each buyer paying for more of it. Eurostat found that 12% of EU individuals used internet-connected devices for home security in 2024, against 13% for smart home appliances, in its Use of Internet of Things by individuals release.
Monitored alarm penetration: 2.60 points
Rising monitoring penetration adds 2.60 points. Verisure puts its monitored-alarm penetration at around 10% in Iberia and the Nordics, against 23% in the United States, and below 4% in the rest of Europe. Its portfolio grew 10% in 2025 and its annualised recurring revenue rose 12.4% to EUR 3.45 billion. Each new subscriber adds a monthly fee that compounds over the contract life.
Cameras, doorbells and smart locks: 1.60 points
Device attach adds 1.60 points. Households that start with a video doorbell often add indoor cameras, a smart lock and a cloud video plan within two years. Ajax Systems said on 12 January 2026 that it had added 100 unique devices to its range in 2025 and opened a factory in Hanoi expected to create over 1,000 jobs, according to its 2025 annual report.
Self-monitored subscriptions: 1.00 point
App-based plans add 1.00 point. Cloud video storage, person detection and professional-backup options turn a one-off camera purchase into a recurring fee of a few euros a month.
Price and service upgrades: 1.20 points
Upgrades add 1.20 points. Video verification, fog generators, guard dispatch and smart-lock integration raise the monthly fee for existing monitored customers, which is why Verisure’s revenue grew 9.9% to EUR 3.75 billion in 2025, faster than its customer count.
The four drivers total 2.60 + 1.60 + 1.00 + 1.20 = 6.40 points of spend growth before restraints. Burglary risk is the trigger for most first purchases, but the subscription model is what turns that one decision into a ten-year revenue stream.
What holds back Europe home security as churn, price competition and privacy rules bite?
Two restraints take 0.40 points off Europe home security spend growth, leaving 6.00% a year. Attrition and low-cost DIY competition remove 0.25 points; camera privacy and cybersecurity compliance remove 0.15 points.
Churn and price competition are the main brake. A 7.4% attrition rate means a monitored-alarm provider must replace about 457,000 of Verisure’s 6.17 million customers every year before it grows, and low-cost self-monitored kits from Amazon’s Ring, Google Nest, EZVIZ and Somfy cap what a first-time buyer will pay. Douglas Insights books 0.25 points of lost spend growth for this pressure.
Compliance adds cost. Cameras that record a street or a neighbour’s garden fall under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and connected devices must now meet EU cybersecurity rules, which slows cheap imports and adds testing cost for every product launch. Douglas Insights books 0.15 points of lost growth for these rules, partly offset by higher prices for certified products.
Installer capacity is a third, smaller constraint. Professional systems need trained technicians, and Ajax Systems reported that more than 64,000 certificates had been issued through its Ajax Academy, which shows how much training the installer channel needs as demand rises.
Which country leads Europe home security spending, and where does it grow fastest?
France leads Europe home security by country, USD 2.88 billion or 16.0% of 2025 value. Germany grows fastest, 8.00% a year to USD 5.44 billion by 2035, because monitored-alarm penetration starts below 4%.
| Country or sub-region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| France | USD 2.88 billion | 16.0% | USD 3.06 billion | 6.20% | USD 5.26 billion |
| United Kingdom | USD 2.70 billion | 15.0% | USD 2.86 billion | 5.90% | USD 4.79 billion |
| Spain | USD 2.70 billion | 15.0% | USD 2.85 billion | 5.60% | USD 4.66 billion |
| Germany | USD 2.52 billion | 14.0% | USD 2.72 billion | 8.00% | USD 5.44 billion |
| Italy | USD 1.62 billion | 9.0% | USD 1.74 billion | 7.40% | USD 3.31 billion |
| Nordics | USD 1.62 billion | 9.0% | USD 1.71 billion | 5.30% | USD 2.72 billion |
| Rest of Europe | USD 3.96 billion | 22.0% | USD 4.22 billion | 6.60% | USD 7.50 billion |
France leads on a large base of houses with gardens and garages, the homes most likely to buy monitored alarms and video doorbells, and it grows 6.20% a year. Spain, USD 2.70 billion, is the most penetrated large market, where Verisure, Prosegur and Sector Alarm all compete, so it grows a slower 5.60%. The United Kingdom, USD 2.70 billion, leans toward self-monitored cameras and doorbells and grows 5.90% a year.
Germany, USD 2.52 billion, overtakes France by 2035 because each point of monitored penetration there adds more households than in any other country. Italy, USD 1.62 billion, grows 7.40% a year on the same catch-up logic. The Nordics, USD 1.62 billion, grow only 5.30% because Verisure and Sector Alarm already reach about one home in ten. The Rest of Europe, USD 3.96 billion, covers Portugal, Benelux, Ireland, Poland and others, and grows 6.60% a year. In the data table the row labelled Global holds the Europe total, USD 18.0 billion in 2025.
Who leads Europe home security: Verisure, Amazon or the lock makers?
Verisure leads Europe home security with about 21.0% of 2025 value, USD 3.78 billion, Douglas Insights estimates from its filed European revenue. With Amazon and Assa Abloy, the top three hold about 29.0%.
| Company | What the position rests on | Estimated share 2025 | Estimated value 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verisure | Monitored alarms with video verification in 18 European and Latin American countries; EUR 3.34 billion European revenue | 21.0% | USD 3.78 billion |
| Amazon | Ring and Blink cameras, doorbells and alarm kits | 5.0% | USD 900 million |
| Assa Abloy | Yale smart locks and residential access | 3.0% | USD 540 million |
| Prosegur | Monitored alarms in Spain and other markets | 3.0% | USD 540 million |
| Sector Alarm | Monitored alarms for more than 680,000 customers in 8 countries | 2.5% | USD 450 million |
| Ajax Systems | Wireless alarm hardware sold through installers | 2.0% | USD 360 million |
| Hikvision (EZVIZ) | Low-cost consumer cameras | 2.0% | USD 360 million |
| Other suppliers | Google Nest, Arlo, Somfy, Bosch, Netatmo and regional installers | 61.5% | USD 11.1 billion |
Verisure listed on Nasdaq Stockholm on 8 October 2025 at EUR 13.25 a share, a market value of EUR 13.7 billion, raising about EUR 3.1 billion of new money, the company announced. Its 2025 revenue split was EUR 1.999 billion in Iberia and the Nordics, EUR 1.340 billion in other European countries and EUR 344.9 million in Latin America, and its adjacencies unit sold Arlo cameras for EUR 115.4 million. Sector Alarm reports more than 680,000 customers across Norway, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy and Portugal on its company page.
Below Verisure the market is fragmented: consumer device brands compete on price in retail, while thousands of local installers sell alarm hardware from Ajax, Bosch and others to homes and small shops.
What does Europe home security cost a household per month?
A European household spent USD 76.60 on home security in 2025, about USD 6.38 a month across all homes, Douglas Insights estimates. A monitored-alarm customer pays far more: Verisure’s average was EUR 46.6 a month.
| Product or service | Typical buyer | Typical price | Share of 2025 value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monitored alarm subscription | Homeowner in a detached house | EUR 46.6 a month, Verisure 2025 average revenue per user | 42.0% |
| Video doorbell or camera | Renter or homeowner | USD 60 to 250 per device, Douglas Insights estimate | 20.0% |
| Smart lock | Homeowner replacing a cylinder | USD 150 to 350 per lock, Douglas Insights estimate | 9.0% |
| Self-monitored cloud plan | App-based kit owner | USD 3 to 15 a month, Douglas Insights estimate | Within self-monitored |
The gap between EUR 46.6 a month for a monitored customer and USD 6.38 a month for the average household is the growth story: each household that moves from no security, or from a single camera, to a monitored system multiplies its spend many times over. Douglas Insights projects average spend of USD 81.20 per household in 2026 and USD 137.18 by 2035.
Monitored prices rise slowly because providers compete for new customers with subsidised equipment and recover the cost over the contract. Verisure’s 2025 customer acquisition revenue was EUR 362.2 million against EUR 3.27 billion of portfolio services revenue, which shows how much of the money comes from the monthly fee rather than the kit.
Which EU rules govern Europe home security: the RED cybersecurity rules and the Cyber Resilience Act?
Two EU rules govern connected Europe home security devices: the Radio Equipment Directive cybersecurity requirements, mandatory since 1 August 2025, and the Cyber Resilience Act, whose reporting duties apply from 11 September 2026.
Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/30 under the Radio Equipment Directive made cybersecurity, privacy and fraud protection mandatory for wireless devices sold in the EU from 1 August 2025, so every Wi-Fi camera, alarm hub and smart lock needs a documented security case; our Bluetooth Beacon Market report covers the same rule for low-power transmitters. The Cyber Resilience Act, Regulation (EU) 2024/2847, requires manufacturers to report actively exploited vulnerabilities with an early warning within 24 hours from 11 September 2026, and most of its obligations apply from 11 December 2027, McCann FitzGerald reported.
Data protection law shapes how cameras are sold: the GDPR applies when a home camera captures public space, so brands add privacy masking and local storage options. Douglas Insights reads these rules as a cost for cheap imports and an advantage for established brands that already run security teams.
What if monitoring spreads faster: where does Europe home security land in 2035?
Europe home security ends 2035 between USD 27.2 billion and USD 40.5 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 33.5 billion. The speed at which German and Italian homes adopt monitoring sets most of the spread.
| Case | Household leg | Spend per household leg | 2035 value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slower | 0.20% | 4.00% | USD 27.2 billion |
| Base case | 0.40% | 6.00% | USD 33.5 billion |
| Faster | 0.60% | 7.80% | USD 40.5 billion |
In the slower case self-monitored kits take most first-time buyers and monitored penetration in Germany stalls. In the faster case insurers start discounting premiums for monitored homes and Verisure’s growth rate holds near 10% a year. One extra point of yearly household growth adds USD 3.50 billion to 2035 Europe home security value.
Spend per household is the lever that matters in practice, because household counts barely move. One extra point of yearly spend growth, the equivalent of Germany reaching Spanish levels of monitoring a few years early, adds about USD 3.31 billion to 2035 value. A point less, if subscription fees stall under DIY competition, removes about USD 3.0 billion. Monitored alarm services carry most of that sensitivity because they hold 42.0% of 2025 value and grow faster than the market.
Douglas Exclusive: the Europe Home Security Penetration Gap Map
The Europe Home Security Penetration Gap Map is a Douglas Insights model, estimated from 8 sourced inputs: 3 company filings and releases, 2 regulatory acts, 1 statistics release, 1 company report and 1 legal briefing.
| Date | Event | What it moves |
|---|---|---|
| 1 August 2025 | RED cybersecurity requirements become mandatory | Device compliance cost |
| 8 October 2025 | Verisure lists at EUR 13.7 billion | Capital for monitored growth |
| 12 January 2026 | Ajax Systems reports 100 new devices in 2025 | Installer hardware range |
| 12 February 2026 | Verisure reports 6.17 million customers | Monitored penetration |
| 11 September 2026 | Cyber Resilience Act reporting duties apply | Device compliance cost |
The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: Germany, Italy and the Rest of Europe hold 45.0% of 2025 Europe home security value but supply 52.0% of the USD 15.7 billion that countries add by 2035, because monitored-alarm penetration there starts below 4% against about 10% in Iberia and the Nordics. The next decade of growth sits where alarms are rarest today.
How does the methodology turn 235 million households into USD 18.0 billion of Europe home security?
How this report is built
- Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
- Seven regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
- The next scheduled review of this study is April 2027.
- Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.
Our methodology multiplies 235 million European households in 2025 by USD 76.60 of home security spend per household to reach USD 18.0 billion. Spend is built from six product and service segments.
The model covers 5 countries and 2 sub-regions, 6 segments and 2 sales channels, and uses 62 data points, 8 sourced and 54 modelled. Arithmetic: 235 million x USD 76.60 = USD 18,001 million; 18,001 x (1.0040 x 1.0600)^10 = USD 33,549.9 million, or USD 33.5 billion. Households reach 236 million in 2026 and 245 million in 2035.
Two cross-checks agree. First, Verisure’s EUR 3.34 billion of European revenue, about USD 3.78 billion, is 50.0% of our monitored alarm segment, consistent with its leadership in 14 of its 18 countries. Second, Eurostat’s 12% of individuals using connected home security sits well above monitored penetration below 4% in most countries, which matches our finding that cameras and DIY kits reach more homes than paid monitoring.

What counts in the Europe home security market, and what is excluded?
The Europe home security market counts residential spending on security products and services across Europe, valued at the price households pay. Commercial security, guarding, city surveillance and insurance premiums stay out.
The by-segment split covers professionally monitored alarm services; consumer video cameras and doorbells; alarm hardware and installation; self-monitored smart security systems; smart locks and access control; and connected smoke, fire and leak sensors. The by-channel split covers subscription providers and retail and installer sales. The by-country split covers France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Italy, the Nordics and the Rest of Europe. Small businesses on residential-style monitored plans are included because providers such as Verisure sell them the same service.
