Argentina added monk fruit extract to its food code as a sweetener on 15 May 2026, when Resolución Conjunta 3/2026 of the Administración Nacional de Medicamentos, Alimentos y Tecnología Médica (ANMAT) and the agriculture secretariat set a floor of 25% mogroside V on a dry basis, according to the Boletín Oficial. The Mogroside Sweetener Market covers extracts of monk fruit (luo han guo, Siraitia grosvenorii) sold to food, drink and supplement makers as high-intensity sweetener ingredients, from juice concentrate to Mogroside V grades of 25%, 40% and 50% or more. Douglas Insights sizes the mogroside sweetener market at USD 313.9 million in 2025, from 3,686 tonnes of extract at an average USD 85.15 per kilogram, and at USD 692.5 million in 2035, a revenue CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 8.23%. The study sits in our food ingredients coverage and follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.

Who supplies mogroside sweetener extracts, and how concentrated is the trade?

Three Chinese extractors hold 42.1% of mogroside sweetener revenue, Douglas Insights estimates: Guilin Layn Natural Ingredients at 18.3%, Monk Fruit Corp at 14.6% and Hunan Huacheng Biotech at 9.2%. Their positions rest on contracted fruit in Guangxi and Hunan, US GRAS (generally recognised as safe) files and long offtake deals with Western ingredient houses.

Company Base What the position is built on Estimated share 2025
Guilin Layn Natural Ingredients Guilin, China Company, cooperative and farmer sourcing in Guilin; renminbi (RMB) 1.18 billion of 2025 natural sweetener sales; dsm-firmenich as overseas partner 18.3%
Monk Fruit Corp (Guilin GFS Monk Fruit Corporation) Guilin, China Founded 2004; notifier of GRAS notice (GRN) 627; supplier behind Tate & Lyle PUREFRUIT for more than 10 years 14.6%
Hunan Huacheng Biotech Changsha, China Juice concentrate and extract grades; notifier of the 2018 juice concentrate file closed as GRN 784 9.2%
Tate & Lyle United Kingdom PUREFRUIT monk fruit extract, paired with SPLENDA sucralose and crystalline fructose inside Monk Fruit Corp
Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) United States SweetRight monk fruit sold beside stevia, allulose and erythritol reseller
Saraya (Lakanto) Japan Lakanto tabletop blends of high-purity monk fruit extract and erythritol captive buyer

Layn is the largest. Its 2025 annual report, filed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange under code 002166, shows revenue of RMB 2.04 billion, up 15.36%, natural sweeteners at RMB 1.18 billion, up 24.19%, and overseas sales at 63.04% of the total. dsm-firmenich, its overseas sales partner for natural sweeteners under a renewed five-year agreement, bought 35.51% of everything Layn sold. Layn does not split monk fruit from stevia; Douglas Insights puts monk fruit at about 34.9% of its sweetener line, or USD 57.4 million.

Monk Fruit Corp, founded in 2004, says it has partnered Tate & Lyle for more than 10 years and holds approvals in eight countries, in its October 2024 release; its extract grades exceed 50% Mogroside V. Douglas Insights values its share at USD 45.8 million. Tate & Lyle sells PUREFRUIT at about 200 times the sweetness of sugar, so we count that revenue once, at the extractor. ADM lists SweetRight monk fruit at up to 200 times sugar’s sweetness, and Saraya launched liquid Lakanto on 1 March 2011, built on monk fruit it describes as grown only in Guilin. Merisant Argentina SRL, the applicant behind the 15 May 2026 Argentine listing, shows tabletop brands now pulling approvals themselves.

Which mogroside sweetener purity grade leads: Mogroside V 50%, 40%, 25% or juice concentrate?

Mogroside V 50% and above leads mogroside sweetener revenue with 38.6% in 2025, worth USD 121.3 million, because beverage makers need its clean taste at low dose. Fermentation-derived and bioconverted mogrosides grow fastest, at 20.33% a year.

Purity grade Share 2025 Value 2025 Growth 2026-2035 Value 2035
Mogroside V 50% and above 38.6% USD 121.3 million 9.05% USD 288.4 million
Mogroside V 25% to 39% 21.2% USD 66.6 million 5.48% USD 113.5 million
Mogroside V 40% to 49% 19.4% USD 61.0 million 7.12% USD 121.4 million
Monk fruit juice concentrate 16.3% USD 51.0 million 4.61% USD 80.1 million
Fermentation-derived and bioconverted mogrosides 4.5% USD 14.0 million 20.33% USD 89.1 million

Mogroside V 50% and above earns USD 121.3 million from 470 tonnes. Higher purity cuts the liquorice notes of minor mogrosides, so brands pay a premium and the grade gains share to 2035.

Mogroside V 25% to 39% holds USD 66.6 million from 640 tonnes, the largest powder tonnage. Tabletop blends use it, and Argentina’s 25% floor makes it the entry grade for new markets.

Mogroside V 40% to 49% is worth USD 61.0 million and grows 7.12% a year. Dairy and bakery formulators pick it as a cost compromise between taste and price per sweetness unit.

Monk fruit juice concentrate takes USD 51.0 million from 2,180 tonnes. The GRN 627 concentrate carries about 3.5% Mogroside V, so it sells by sweetness and fruit labelling, mostly into juices and infant foods.

Fermentation-derived and bioconverted mogrosides start small at USD 14.0 million but reach USD 89.1 million by 2035. Layn says it is the first company to run a full de novo synthesis route for Mogroside V, a project its 2025 report lists as progressing to plan.

Why is demand for mogroside sweetener growing 7.12% a year in volume?

Mogroside sweetener tonnage grows 7.12% a year to 2035, from 3,686 to 7,333 tonnes, and beverage sugar reduction alone supplies 2.18 points. Five drivers each carry a measured slice, and their points sum to the volume leg.

Beverage sugar reduction: 2.18 points

Beverages add 2.18 points. Drink makers reformulating under sugar taxes and warning labels use Mogroside V 50% with stevia to mask bitterness, and beverages already take 34.8% of mogroside sweetener value. Douglas Insights estimates beverage demand at 1,310 tonnes of extract in 2025, rising to 2,870 tonnes by 2035 as zero-sugar colas, iced teas and sports drinks move from 10% to about 25% natural-sweetener blends on our model.

Tabletop and keto-style blends: 1.46 points

Tabletop sweeteners add 1.46 points. Lakanto, launched in Japan and now sold in the United States, mixes monk fruit extract with erythritol, and similar blends fill low-sugar baking aisles. Tabletop holds 26.3% of value, about USD 82.6 million, and Douglas Insights counts 1,140 tonnes of extract in 2025 sachets, jars and syrups, growing faster than sugar-free gums because home bakers now buy one-to-one sugar replacements.

New approvals in Latin America and beyond: 1.18 points

Approvals add 1.18 points. The 15 May 2026 Argentine resolution cites earlier clearances in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Mexico, China and Japan, and took effect the day after publication. Douglas Insights counts Argentina, Brazil and Chile for 0.46 of these points and a possible European Union (EU) additive opinion for 0.72.

Supplements and pharma: 1.21 points

Dietary supplements and pharma add 1.21 points. Protein powders, gummies and syrups prefer a plant-derived sweetener for clean labels, and the segment holds 15.4% of value, USD 48.3 million in 2025, at the highest Mogroside V purity per dose of any user.

Dairy, bakery and confectionery: 1.09 points

Dairy, bakery and confectionery add 1.09 points together, worth USD 73.8 million of 2025 value. Yogurt and frozen desserts need a heat-stable, low-pH-stable sweetener, which Tate & Lyle lists for PUREFRUIT. The five contributions, 2.18 + 1.46 + 1.18 + 1.21 + 1.09, sum to the 7.12% volume leg.

What holds back mogroside sweetener demand, from Guilin harvests to the WHO guideline?

Three restraints remove 1.15 points from mogroside sweetener volume growth, which would otherwise run at 8.27% a year. Harvest swings take 0.52 points, sweetener caution from health bodies 0.38 points and stevia’s lower cost 0.25 points.

Harvest swings hinder supply. Monk fruit is a vine crop concentrated in Guangxi, and raw fruit prices move sharply between seasons. Layn reported 2024 natural sweetener revenue up only 5.46%, to RMB 952.0 million, because lower 2023 fruit prices forced price cuts even as volume grew strongly, in its 2024 board report. Buyers who face that volatility keep stevia as the volume base.

Health caution holds back drinks. The World Health Organization (WHO) advised on 15 May 2023 against using non-sugar sweeteners for weight control, in a conditional recommendation that names stevia among examples. Argentina’s Ley 27.642, published on 12 November 2021, requires the legend “contiene edulcorantes, no recomendable en niños/as” under warning seals, per the Boletín Oficial.

Cost restrains share gains. Douglas Insights estimates a sweetness-equivalent kilogram of Mogroside V 50% costs about 1.9 times stevia rebaudioside A at 2025 prices, so many formulators cap monk fruit at a taste-masking dose.

Where is mogroside sweetener bought, and why is Latin America the fastest region?

North America buys USD 123.7 million of mogroside sweetener in 2025, 39.4% of the world, on the back of eight US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) GRAS notices since 2010. Latin America grows fastest at 10.93% a year, from USD 27.0 million to USD 76.2 million, as Argentina joins Mexico.

Region Value 2025 Share 2025 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
North America USD 123.7 million 39.4% 7.12% USD 246.0 million
Asia Pacific USD 112.0 million 35.7% 8.14% USD 245.0 million
Europe USD 35.2 million 11.2% 9.83% USD 89.9 million
Latin America USD 27.0 million 8.6% 10.93% USD 76.2 million
Middle East and Africa USD 16.0 million 5.1% 8.27% USD 35.4 million

North America reaches USD 246.0 million by 2035. US beverage and tabletop brands have used monk fruit since GRN 301 closed in January 2010, and Layn converted its Indiana plant into a full extraction site in 2025, per its 2025 annual report.

Asia Pacific is worth USD 112.0 million and grows 8.14% a year to USD 245.0 million. China consumes extract in teas and functional drinks, Japan buys through Lakanto, and Australia and New Zealand appear among the prior approvals cited in the Argentine resolution, which also borrows Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) Schedule 15 specifications.

Europe is the wildcard at USD 35.2 million, growing 9.83% a year to USD 89.9 million. Only non-selective water decoctions are cleared there today; an additive opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) would open soft drinks. The Middle East and Africa hold USD 16.0 million and grow 8.27% a year to USD 35.4 million, on imported beverage and supplement demand.

Latin America is the fastest region at 10.93% a year, rising from USD 27.0 million to USD 76.2 million. Argentina’s 15 May 2026 listing, requested by Merisant Argentina SRL, opens a market where Ley 27.642 warning seals already push brands away from sugar, and the resolution cites Mexico as an earlier approval. Douglas Insights estimates Brazil, Mexico and Argentina at 71.4% of Latin American value in 2035.

How much does a kilogram of mogroside sweetener cost by purity grade?

Mogroside sweetener averages USD 85.15 per kilogram in 2025, inside a band from about USD 18 for juice concentrate to more than USD 500 for fermentation-derived Mogroside V. Mogroside V content, colour and residual bitterness set the price.

Grade Realised price band 2025 Weighted average Basis
Monk fruit juice concentrate USD 18 to USD 31 per kg USD 23.4 Douglas Insights estimate
Mogroside V 25% to 39% USD 78 to USD 128 per kg USD 104 Douglas Insights estimate
Mogroside V 40% to 49% USD 130 to USD 196 per kg USD 164 Douglas Insights estimate
Mogroside V 50% and above USD 205 to USD 330 per kg USD 258 Douglas Insights estimate
Fermentation-derived and bioconverted mogrosides USD 470 to USD 720 per kg USD 585 Douglas Insights estimate

Fruit cost is the swing factor. Layn sold 7,652.6 tonnes of plant extracts in 2025 for RMB 2.04 billion, a blended RMB 267 per kilogram, or USD 37.16 at the Federal Reserve’s 2025 average of 7.1875 yuan per dollar from its G.5A release. Douglas Insights projects the mogroside sweetener average to rise 1.04% a year, to USD 94.44 per kilogram by 2035, as Mogroside V 50% and fermentation grades gain share while fruit-based grades get cheaper per unit of sweetness.

How much monk fruit does Guilin grow for mogroside sweetener extraction?

Yongfu County in Guilin alone planted 132,000 mu (about 8,800 hectares) of monk fruit in 2025 and expected about 1.5 billion fruits, the Guilin tax bureau reported. That one county supplies roughly 35% of the fruit our mogroside sweetener model needs.

The State Taxation Administration’s Guilin bureau put the high-quality fruit rate above 95%, with 640 contract households at one Yongfu firm. Douglas Insights calculates that the 637 tonnes of Mogroside V inside 2025 mogroside sweetener sales need about 4.25 billion fruits at 0.15 grams of recoverable Mogroside V each.

Supply is single-country: every grade except fermentation-derived mogrosides starts on Chinese vines, which is why Layn invests in de novo synthesis and signs price-protection agreements with suppliers.

Which applications use mogroside sweetener, from beverages to tabletop and supplements?

Beverages take 34.8% of mogroside sweetener value in 2025, USD 109.2 million, followed by tabletop sweeteners at 26.3%, or USD 82.6 million. Supplements and pharma, bakery and confectionery, and dairy share the remaining 38.9%.

Application Share 2025 Value 2025
Beverages 34.8% USD 109.2 million
Tabletop sweeteners 26.3% USD 82.6 million
Dietary supplements and pharma 15.4% USD 48.3 million
Bakery and confectionery 12.6% USD 39.6 million
Dairy and frozen desserts 10.9% USD 34.2 million

Beverages buy mostly Mogroside V 50%; tabletop blends lean on 25% to 40% grades; supplements and pharma use monk fruit in protein powders and cough syrups. Bakery and confectionery value it beside bulking agents; our Mouthfeel Enhancing Ingredient Market study sizes the texture side of the same reformulation. Dairy and frozen desserts use it in yogurt and ice cream, with GRN 627 also covering infant and toddler foods other than formula.

Which regulations and standards govern mogroside sweetener in the US, EU, China and Argentina?

Four rulebooks set where mogroside sweetener can be sold: eight FDA GRAS notices since 2010, a 2019 EFSA opinion that could not conclude on safety, China’s GB 2760-2024 standard and Argentina’s 2026 food code listing.

The FDA GRAS notice inventory lists GRN 301 (closed 15 January 2010), 359, 522, 556, 627, 706 and 784 with “no questions” letters, plus GRN 629, withdrawn and resubmitted as GRN 706. The GRN 627 letter of 11 October 2016 cites usual use levels of 0.25% to 0.50%. The Hunan Huacheng notice gives concentrate Mogroside V of 0.6% to 3.9%.

In Europe, the EFSA food additives panel found the toxicity database “insufficient to conclude on the safety” of extracts of 25% to 55% Mogroside V in its December 2019 opinion. Food Standards Scotland ruled water decoctions not novel in a 21 June 2024 notice, and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland confirmed the same in October 2024, per the Monk Fruit Corp release. EFSA’s Panel on Food Additives and Flavourings (FAF) 2026-2027 workplan lists a new monk fruit extract additive application, its clock stopped until 31 August 2026, with a 10 January deadline.

China’s National Health Commission released GB 2760-2024, the national (Guobiao) standard for food additive use, on 12 March 2024, in force from 8 February 2025, replacing GB 2760-2014, per the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service. Argentina’s 2026 resolution adds item 179 to article 1.398 of the Código Alimentario Argentino (CAA), with lead at 2 mg/kg and ash at 2% maximum, against Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) specifications.

What if Guilin harvests or an EU approval shift the mogroside sweetener forecast for 2035?

Mogroside sweetener ends 2035 between USD 502.1 million and USD 912.3 million across our three cases, around a base of USD 692.5 million. Volume sets most of the spread, because approvals and beverage uptake carry 3.36 points of the base tonnage leg.

Case Volume leg Price leg 2035 value
Slower 4.60% 0.20% USD 502.1 million
Base case 7.12% 1.04% USD 692.5 million
Faster 9.40% 1.70% USD 912.3 million

In the slower case, two poor Guilin harvests and a negative EFSA outcome hold volume to 4.60%. In the faster case, the EU clears extract as an additive, and markets follow the route Argentina took on 15 May 2026, so volume grows 9.40%. One extra point of yearly tonnage growth adds USD 67.4 million to the 2035 value; one point less removes USD 62.0 million.

Published forecasts for monk fruit sweeteners span roughly 5.1% to 8.6% a year. Our 8.23% sits near the top, because we include fermentation-derived mogrosides and value extract at first sale rather than blended retail packs.

Douglas Exclusive: the mogroside sweetener approval ledger

The mogroside sweetener approval ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 15 sourced inputs: eight FDA GRAS notices, two EFSA documents, two United Kingdom and Irish determinations, one Chinese standard and two Argentine legal texts. It dates each decision and tags the purity grade it covers.

Date Decision Grade covered
15 January 2010 FDA closes GRN 301, no questions Extract
11 October 2016 FDA closes GRN 627 Juice concentrate, 3.5% Mogroside V
20 November 2018 FDA closes GRN 784 Juice concentrate, 0.6% to 3.9%
11 December 2019 EFSA cannot conclude on safety Extract, 25% to 55%
12 November 2021 Argentina publishes Ley 27.642 sweetener legend All sweeteners
12 March 2024 China releases GB 2760-2024 All additives
21 June 2024 Food Standards Scotland: decoctions not novel Water decoction
October 2024 Ireland confirms decoctions not novel Water decoction
15 May 2026 Argentina lists monk fruit extract Extract, 25% minimum
31 August 2026 EFSA stop-the-clock ends on new application Extract

The finding: low-purity forms clear faster than extracts. Six of the ten entries cover concentrate, decoctions or general rules rather than Mogroside V extract. Europe, at 11.2% of 2025 mogroside sweetener value, is the only large region where extract is still not a permitted additive, so it holds the largest single upside in the ledger.

How does the methodology turn 3,686 tonnes of mogroside sweetener into USD 313.9 million?

How this report is built

  • Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
  • Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
  • The next scheduled review of this study is April 2027.
  • Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.

Our methodology multiplies 3,686 tonnes of 2025 mogroside sweetener extract by an average USD 85.15 per kilogram to reach USD 313.9 million. Tonnage comes from five purity-grade builds; price comes from grade bands weighted by tonnage.

The model covers 38 countries in five regions and uses 96 data points, 21 sourced and 75 modelled. Arithmetic: 3,686 x 85.15 / 1,000 = 313.9; 313.9 x (1.0712 x 1.0104)^10 = 692.5, or USD 692.5 million. Tonnage in 2035 reaches 7,333 and price USD 94.44 per kilogram.

Two cross-checks agree. First, Layn’s 2025 natural sweetener revenue of RMB 1.18 billion equals USD 164.5 million at 7.1875 yuan per dollar; our USD 57.4 million monk fruit estimate is 34.9% of that line, leaving stevia as the larger part on our model. Second, the 637 tonnes of Mogroside V implied by our grade mix need about 4.25 billion fruits, against 1.5 billion from Yongfu County alone, consistent with Guilin’s role as the main base.

Which monk fruit products count as mogroside sweetener, and what is excluded?

Mogroside sweetener here means monk fruit extracts and juice concentrates sold as sweetening ingredients, valued at first sale by the extractor or fermenter. Dried fruit, herbal teas, finished tabletop packs and blend erythritol stay out.

The by-grade split covers Mogroside V 50% and above, Mogroside V 40% to 49%, Mogroside V 25% to 39%, monk fruit juice concentrate, and fermentation-derived and bioconverted mogrosides. The by-application split covers beverages, tabletop sweeteners, dairy and frozen desserts, bakery and confectionery, and dietary supplements and pharma. Broader additive demand sits in our Food Additives Market report, and supplement end products in the Plant Based Supplement Market study.
