366 million cars stood on China’s road register at the end of 2025, by the Ministry of Public Security’s count, and only a thin slice of the new ones are people carriers. The Multi Purpose Vehicle Market covers new multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs): passenger vehicles with a tall body, flexible seating for six to eight and, in most full-size models, sliding rear doors. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 100.90 billion in 2025, from 3.495 million MPVs sold at an average transaction price of USD 28,869, and projects USD 145.41 billion by 2035, a revenue CAGR of 3.72%. Premium electrified vans set the tone: GM said on 8 January 2026 that Buick’s MPV deliveries in China exceeded 120,000 units in 2025, up 23%. The study belongs to our automotive and transportation research, and every input is traceable through the research methodology.
Which MPV size class makes the money, from seven-seat compacts to lounge-seat luxury vans?
Full-size and premium MPV models earn 39.3% of multi-purpose vehicle revenue, USD 39.65 billion in 2025. A Sienna, Carnival, GL8 or Denza D9 sells for two to four times the price of a compact people carrier, while compact and mid-size vans ship far more units.
| Size class | Share of 2025 value | 2025 value | CAGR 2026-2035 | 2035 value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact MPV | 27.6% | USD 27.85 billion | 2.58% | USD 35.93 billion |
| Mid-size MPV | 33.1% | USD 33.40 billion | 3.37% | USD 46.52 billion |
| Full-size and premium MPV | 39.3% | USD 39.65 billion | 4.73% | USD 62.95 billion |
Compact MPV models, the Ertiga, Sienta, Freed and Avanza class, hold 27.6% or USD 27.85 billion; their share rests on volume in India, Japan and Southeast Asia, where a 4.4-metre seven-seater fits city streets and family budgets. Mid-size MPV vans such as the Innova, Noah, Voxy, Serena and Carens take 33.1%, or USD 33.40 billion, because they double as private family cars and as taxi and fleet workhorses. The full-size and premium MPV class is also the fastest grower at 4.73% a year, reaching USD 62.95 billion by 2035, since plug-in hybrid and battery electric luxury vans in China and hybrid minivans in North America lift the average ticket every year. Compact vehicles grow at only 2.58% as small SUVs compete for the same buyer.
How fast are hybrid and plug-in drivetrains taking over MPV sales?
Douglas Insights estimates that 38.6% of 2025 multi-purpose vehicle revenue already came from electrified models: full hybrid 21.9% and plug-in hybrid and battery electric 16.7%. Petrol and diesel vans keep 61.4%, mostly compact and mid-size models sold in India, Southeast Asia and Latin America.
The shift is fastest at the top of the range. Toyota now builds the 2026 Sienna minivan as a hybrid only, rated at up to 36 combined miles per gallon, so every Sienna sold in North America counts as full hybrid. In China, SAIC-GM figures reported by the trade press show more than 80,000 of Buick’s 2025 MPVs were plug-in or electric versions. Plug-in hybrid and battery electric MPVs gain about 2.9 points of share a year in our model, while petrol and diesel lose roughly 2.4 points. By 2035 we expect electrified drivetrains to carry 71.8% of MPV value.
Why are families and fleets buying more sliding-door MPVs again?
Three forces add 1.42 points a year to multi-purpose vehicle volume through 2035: first-car family buying in India and Southeast Asia, electrified premium vans in China, and a hybrid minivan revival in North America. Price adds another 2.27 points on top of that volume leg.
Indian and Southeast Asian families contribute 0.61 points, the largest share. India sold 448,233 MPVs in the fiscal year to March 2025, up 15.06%, about one in ten of the country’s 4.3 million passenger vehicles, and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga alone sold 190,974 units. A seven-seat compact multi-purpose vehicle that costs little more than a sedan suits households where three generations travel together, so we hold Indian MPV volume growth near 5.4% a year to 2030.
China’s electrified premium van supplies 0.47 points. The country’s MPV volume fell from a 2016 peak of 2.55 million to 952,000 in 2024, yet the top of the market is growing: GM’s 8 January 2026 release put Buick MPV deliveries above 120,000 in 2025, up 23%, and BYD’s Denza D9 passed 300,000 cumulative sales in under three years. Business hosts, airport shuttles and large families pay for second-row lounge seats, and new plug-in vans pull buyers back from large SUVs.
North America adds 0.34 points. American Honda said on 5 January 2026 that the Odyssey sold more than 88,000 units in 2025, up 10.2% and its best year since 2019, and Kia America’s Carnival rose 44% to 71,917 units. Hybrid fuel economy, a 2025 refresh cycle and rental fleet replacement brought minivan buyers back. Japan adds no net points: its market of about 520,000 MPVs a year is a replacement market, and we hold its volume flat. Taken together, the three drivers move global MPV volume from 3.495 million units in 2025 to about 4.02 million in 2035.
Price momentum sits on top of the 1.42-point volume leg. Electrified drivetrains raise the average multi-purpose vehicle ticket by about 2.27% a year in our model, because hybrid and plug-in vans, such as the all-hybrid Sienna and the plug-in Denza D9, sit at the top of the price bands. That mix shift is why value grows 3.72% a year while units grow far more slowly, from 3.495 million to about 4.02 million. In money terms, volume contributes roughly USD 15.3 billion of the USD 44.51 billion added between 2025 and 2035, and price mix contributes the rest.
Which headwinds slow MPV volumes as three-row SUVs take over the school run?
Three headwinds would remove 0.88 points from the 1.42-point multi-purpose vehicle volume leg if they all intensify, leaving 0.54% a year in our slower case. The heaviest is the three-row SUV, which wins image-conscious families even though it offers less cabin space.
SUV substitution removes 0.39 points. Crossovers were the fastest-growing body type in China in 2025, while MPVs, sedans and SUVs grew more slowly. Our slower case assumes the crossover keeps taking first-time family buyers in China, Europe and North America at the 2025 pace.
China’s price war takes 0.28 points. MPVs were only 3.8% of Chinese passenger vehicle sales in 2024, and our slower case assumes discounting on plug-in SUVs narrows the price gap that lounge-seat vans rely on. Mid-size MPV makers without a plug-in model have the least room to respond.
A thinner European range removes 0.21 points. Europe holds only 13.0% of multi-purpose vehicle value in our model, and the slower case assumes fewer compact nameplates are renewed there, leaving van-based people carriers whose volumes follow commercial van cycles.
How much does an MPV cost buyers, from an Indian Ertiga to a hybrid Sienna?
Douglas Insights puts the global average multi-purpose vehicle transaction price at USD 28,869 in 2025, rising 2.27% a year to about USD 36,134 by 2035. The spread is wide: Indian compact MPVs average about USD 15,200, Chinese MPVs USD 31,500 and North American minivans USD 44,600.
Published list prices anchor the top of the band. The 2026 Toyota Sienna starts at USD 40,120 for the LE FWD grade. Honda priced the 2026 Odyssey from USD 42,795 for the EX-L to USD 51,695 for the Elite, plus a USD 1,495 destination charge. The Denza D9 sells in China for 309,800 to 526,600 yuan, about USD 42,500 to USD 72,300.
| Market | 2025 units (million) | Average price (USD) | 2025 value |
|---|---|---|---|
| North America | 0.415 | 44,600 | USD 18.51 billion |
| Europe | 0.330 | 39,800 | USD 13.13 billion |
| China | 1.010 | 31,500 | USD 31.82 billion |
| Japan | 0.520 | 24,600 | USD 12.79 billion |
| India | 0.470 | 15,200 | USD 7.14 billion |
| Other Asia Pacific | 0.540 | 21,800 | USD 11.77 billion |
| Latin America | 0.088 | 24,500 | USD 2.16 billion |
| Middle East and Africa | 0.122 | 29,300 | USD 3.58 billion |
Mix explains most of the 2.27% price leg. Hybrid systems, power sliding doors, captain’s chairs and driver-assistance hardware each add a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per vehicle. Pure inflation explains less.
Which companies win the MPV contest, and how concentrated is it?
Toyota leads multi-purpose vehicle revenue with an estimated 18.7% share in 2025, built on the Sienna, Alphard, Vellfire, Noah, Voxy, Sienta, Innova and Rumion. Douglas Insights calculates that the top three makers, Toyota, Honda and SAIC-GM’s Buick, hold 31.6% of value.
| Company | Main MPV nameplates | Position built on |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota | Sienna, Alphard, Noah, Voxy, Sienta, Innova | Hybrid range in every size class |
| Honda | Odyssey, Freed, Step WGN | Japanese compacts and US minivans |
| SAIC-GM (Buick) | GL8 family | China’s premium business van |
| BYD (Denza) | Denza D9 | Plug-in and electric luxury van |
| Maruti Suzuki | Ertiga, XL6, Invicto | About 51.8% of Indian MPV volume |
| Kia | Carnival, Carens | US and Indian family vans |
| Stellantis | Chrysler Pacifica, Voyager | Plug-in hybrid US minivan |
| Nissan | Serena | Japanese mid-size vans |
Honda’s position rests on two markets: the Freed and Step WGN in Japan, and the Odyssey, which American Honda reported on 5 January 2026 had its best US year since 2019. Buick’s GL8 family, whose 2025 deliveries GM put above 120,000, has led China’s premium MPV segment for more than two decades. BYD’s Denza D9 is the challenger, with 300,000 cumulative sales. Maruti Suzuki sells about every second MPV in India. Kia sells the Carnival in North America, with US sales up 44% in 2025 according to Kia America’s 2 January 2026 release, and the Carens in India. Stellantis reported Chrysler minivan sales up 32% in the fourth quarter of 2025. Nissan’s Serena keeps a place in Japan’s December top ten.
Where are multi-purpose vehicle sales growing fastest: Asia, North America or Europe?
Asia Pacific earns 63.0% of multi-purpose vehicle revenue, USD 63.52 billion in 2025, and is also the fastest grower at 4.29% a year to USD 96.68 billion by 2035. China, Japan and India are the three largest MPV markets on earth.
North America is second with USD 18.51 billion and grows 2.97% a year to USD 24.80 billion, supported by hybrid Siennas, refreshed Odysseys and the Carnival. Europe holds USD 13.13 billion and is the slowest region at 1.76%, reaching USD 15.64 billion as compact MPV nameplates disappear. Latin America contributes USD 2.16 billion, growing 3.41% on Brazilian and Mexican family vans. The Middle East and Africa, at USD 3.58 billion and 3.96% a year, is the wildcard: the region is small, so a single large hotel, airport or ride-hailing fleet order for premium vans can move its total in any year.
Within Asia Pacific, India is the fastest large country. Volume there grew 15.06% in fiscal 2025, compared with a long decline in China between 2016 and 2022. Japan stays steady: seven leading Japanese minivans, led by the Sienta with 9,239 units, together sold 42,163 units in December 2025 alone, which supports our estimate of about 520,000 a year.
How do ride-hailing operators and private households split MPV purchases?
Douglas Insights counts private households as 78.4% of multi-purpose vehicle units in 2025, with fleet and ride-hailing operators taking the other 21.6%. Fleet buyers matter more than their share suggests because they buy in batches.
Private households buy the Ertiga, Sienta and Odyssey for school runs, holidays and grandparents. Fleet and ride-hailing operators buy mid-size and premium vans for taxi, corporate and airport transport, where eight seats and a sliding door earn more per trip. The fleet share rises to 24.3% by 2035 in our model as app-based seven-seat ride classes spread. Fleet multi-purpose vehicle demand also turns over faster in our model, with a four-year replacement assumption against seven years for households.
What if electrified MPV uptake stalls: how far apart are the 2035 cases?
Douglas Insights forecasts USD 145.41 billion for the multi-purpose vehicle market in 2035 in the base case, between USD 127.65 billion in the slower case and USD 163.24 billion in the faster case. The difference comes from family buying in Asia and from how fast electrified premium vans spread.
The base case combines 1.42% volume growth with 2.27% price growth. The slower case, with 0.54% volume and 1.83% price, assumes three-row SUVs keep winning and China’s price war compresses van pricing; it ends at USD 127.65 billion. The faster case, with 2.16% volume and 2.71% price, assumes most premium nameplates repeat the Buick result in GM’s 8 January 2026 release, 23% growth led by plug-in and electric versions; it ends at USD 163.24 billion.
Sensitivity is high. Adding 1 point to annual volume growth lifts the 2035 MPV value by about USD 14.99 billion. Published forecasts for this market range from 5.6% to 12.55% a year; our 3.72% sits below all of them because we price vans at observed transaction levels and allow for SUV substitution.
Which safety rules and emissions standards shape MPV engineering?
Automatic emergency braking, required on US light vehicles by September 2029, is the biggest engineering item for multi-purpose vehicle makers this decade. NHTSA finalised Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 127 on 29 April 2024, requiring automatic emergency braking on light vehicles by September 2029.
The NHTSA rule requires the system to avoid a lead vehicle at up to 62 miles per hour and to brake for pedestrians at up to 45 miles per hour, and the agency expects it to save at least 360 lives a year. Large minivans need heavier brakes and stronger sensors to meet those speeds with a full load of eight passengers. Fuel economy and carbon standards in China, Japan, India and the United States push makers toward hybrid and plug-in drivetrains, which is why we expect electrified MPV value to reach 71.8% by 2035.
Douglas Exclusive: the MPV Nameplate Momentum Scorecard
The MPV Nameplate Momentum Scorecard is a Douglas Insights model built from 10 sourced inputs. It takes the latest annual volume and reported growth rate of five multi-purpose vehicle nameplates in China, India and the United States. Volume earns up to 60 points against the largest nameplate; growth earns up to 40 points, capped at 50% a year.
| Nameplate | Market and period | Units | Growth | Score (0-100) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Suzuki Ertiga | India, FY2025 | 190,974 | 28% | 82.4 |
| Kia Carnival | United States, 2025 | 71,917 | 44% | 57.8 |
| Buick MPV lineup | China, 2025 | 120,000 | 23% | 56.1 |
| Toyota Rumion | India, FY2025 | 21,878 | 266% | 46.9 |
| Honda Odyssey | United States, 2025 | 88,000 | 10.2% | 35.8 |
The Ertiga scores 82.4 because it combines the largest volume with 28% growth. The Carnival, at 57.8, edges past Buick’s MPV range because its 44% US growth offsets lower volume. The Odyssey ranks last at 35.8 despite its best year since 2019, showing that North American minivan growth is real but slower than in Asia. The finding: the strongest momentum in the multi-purpose vehicle market sits in affordable Indian seven-seaters and electrified premium vans, not in the traditional mid-size minivan.
What sits inside the multi-purpose vehicle count, and what is left out?
The model counts 3.495 million new multi-purpose vehicles in 2025, valued at the price paid by the first buyer. MPVs, minivans and van-based people carriers with up to nine seats are included; three-row SUVs, commercial panel vans and buses are excluded.
Used vehicles, aftermarket parts and rentals are also left out. Readers who follow electric drivetrains can compare this study with our New Energy Vehicles Market report, while the ADAS Market and the Self Driving Vehicles Market studies cover the driver-assistance hardware that minivans increasingly carry.
What methodology turns MPV unit counts into a revenue figure?
How this report is built
- Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
- Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
- The next scheduled review of this study is April 2027.
- Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.
3.495 million units multiplied by USD 28,869 gives USD 100.90 billion for the multi-purpose vehicle market in 2025. Eight country and regional blocks are modelled separately, each with its own unit count and average price, and they sum to the global figure.
Inputs include 12 company and statistical data points: China’s 952,000 MPVs in 2024, India’s 448,233 MPVs in fiscal 2025, Japan’s December 2025 minivan sales, five nameplate volumes and four list prices. Cross-check one: the regional build implies China held 28.9% of global MPV units, close to the 27.2% implied by China’s 2024 count. Cross-check two: North American list prices of USD 40,120 to USD 51,695 bracket our USD 44,600 regional average. The model was built with data available up to October 2026.
