BOE chairman Chen Yanshun told investors in early 2026 that the company shipped about 150 million active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) smartphone panels in 2025, up 8%, and that 668 million phones carried a flexible AMOLED screen that year, OLED-Info reported on 6 April 2026. Most of those screens were made, and many were sold, in Asia Pacific. The Asia Pacific smartphone display market covers the finished panels, flexible OLED, foldable OLED, rigid OLED, low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) LCD and amorphous silicon (a-Si) LCD, that panel makers sell for handsets sold, and repaired, in China, India, Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand and the rest of Asia Pacific. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 24.3 billion in 2025, from 1.108 billion panels at an average USD 21.93, and at USD 35.4 billion in 2035, a revenue CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 3.83%. The study sits in our information technology and semiconductors coverage and every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.
Which panel makers supply smartphone displays to handset brands, and how concentrated is the competition?
Samsung Display supplies the most smartphone display value to handsets sold in Asia Pacific, about 31.8% of 2025 value or USD 7.73 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. With BOE and LG Display, the top three panel makers hold 63.8%.
| Panel maker | What the position rests on | Estimated share 2025 | Estimated value 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Display | Flexible LTPO OLED for Galaxy and iPhone flagships; rigid OLED for Galaxy A | 31.8% | USD 7.73 billion |
| BOE | About 150 million AMOLED panels plus the largest a-Si LCD volume | 22.6% | USD 5.49 billion |
| LG Display | Flexible OLED for iPhone | 9.4% | USD 2.28 billion |
| TCL CSOT | LTPS LCD and flexible OLED for Chinese brands | 8.2% | USD 1.99 billion |
| Visionox | Flexible and foldable OLED for Honor and other Chinese brands | 7.6% | USD 1.85 billion |
| Tianma | LTPS LCD and flexible OLED from its TM17 line | 7.1% | USD 1.73 billion |
| HKC, Japan Display and other makers | a-Si LCD and smaller fabs | 13.3% | USD 3.23 billion |
Samsung Display’s lead rests on flexible LTPO panels, the costliest bar-phone smartphone display. Its parent reported KRW 9.5 trillion of display revenue and KRW 2.0 trillion of operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2025 on 29 January 2026, in Samsung Electronics results. LG Display reported KRW 25.8 trillion of 2025 revenue, with mobile and other devices at 36% of sales, on 28 January 2026 (LG Display results); almost all of its smartphone display value comes from iPhone.
Chinese makers win on volume and price. BOE targets 160 million AMOLED panels in 2026 and more than 200 million by 2028, and it blamed patent disputes and a subsidy that mostly favoured budget phones for missing its 2025 goal. Tianma returned to profit in 2025 on revenue of CNY 36.227 billion, up 8.16%, and ranked second in China for OLED phone screens, Gasgoo reported on 16 March 2026. Japan Display went the other way, ending OLED output at its Mobara fab by March 2026 and laying off about 1,500 staff, OLED-Info reported.
Which smartphone display technology carries the value in Asia Pacific handsets?
Flexible OLED carries the value: 65.6% of 2025 Asia Pacific smartphone display value, USD 15.9 billion, from 335.0 million panels. Foldable OLED grows fastest, 13.40% a year, from USD 1.76 billion to USD 6.19 billion by 2035.
| Technology | Panels 2025 | Share of value 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flexible OLED | 335.0 million | 65.6% | USD 15.9 billion | 4.60% | USD 25.0 billion |
| Foldable OLED | 11.6 million sets | 7.3% | USD 1.76 billion | 13.40% | USD 6.19 billion |
| Rigid OLED | 128.0 million | 8.9% | USD 2.16 billion | -7.60% | USD 980.8 million |
| LTPS LCD | 205.0 million | 9.1% | USD 2.21 billion | -4.90% | USD 1.34 billion |
| a-Si LCD | 428.7 million | 9.1% | USD 2.22 billion | -1.40% | USD 1.92 billion |
Flexible OLED leads because every flagship and most upper mid-range phones sold in China, Japan, South Korea and Australia now use it, and each panel realises about USD 47.60. Its value rises 4.60% a year to USD 25.0 billion as Chinese brands push flexible screens into phones priced under USD 300. Foldable OLED holds USD 1.76 billion from 11.6 million inner-and-outer sets, because China is the world’s largest foldable market and Apple’s iPhone Duo, unveiled on 9 September 2026 with a 7.6-inch inner and a 5.4-inch outer display (Apple Newsroom), adds the region’s richest buyers in Japan, South Korea and Australia. The handset view is in our Foldable Smartphone Market report.
Rigid OLED, USD 2.16 billion, shrinks 7.60% a year as Samsung Electronics moves Galaxy A models to flexible panels and glass lines close. LTPS LCD, USD 2.21 billion, falls 4.90% a year as mid-range buyers in China switch to OLED. The a-Si LCD smartphone display line holds USD 2.22 billion and 428.7 million panels, the most of any technology, because entry phones in India, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Pakistan still use it; it declines only 1.40% a year.
Why is smartphone display revenue growing faster than panel counts in Asia Pacific?
Asia Pacific smartphone display revenue grows 3.83% a year while panel volume grows 0.85%, because buyers trade up from LCD to OLED. Four volume drivers add 1.05 points; India and Southeast Asia handset growth supplies 0.50 of them.
India and Southeast Asia handset growth: 0.50 points
India and Southeast Asia add 0.50 points. India produced mobile phones worth INR 5.5 lakh crore in fiscal 2024-25, up from INR 2.14 lakh crore in fiscal 2019-20, and exported smartphones worth INR 2 lakh crore, Business Today reported on 15 July 2026. Every phone assembled in India for local sale draws a smartphone display from the panel makers counted here, and first-time smartphone buyers in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines add volume each year.
Second screens on foldables: 0.22 points
Foldables add 0.22 points, because each folding phone carries an inner and an outer panel. Chinese brands Huawei, Honor, Vivo, Oppo and Xiaomi all sell book-style and flip foldables, and the iPhone Duo at USD 1,999 brings Apple’s buyers into the category.
Repair and service spares: 0.18 points
Repair adds 0.18 points. A cracked screen is the commonest phone repair, and the 1.108 billion panels in 2025 exceed the handsets sold in Asia Pacific by a wide margin because service spares and refurbishment buy their own smartphone display panels.
China’s trade-in subsidy: 0.15 points
China’s subsidy adds 0.15 points. The 2026 consumer trade-in programme, announced on 30 and 31 December 2025, pays 15% of a new smartphone’s price up to CNY 500 per device, according to the Shanghai municipal government; the central fund for the scheme is CNY 62.5 billion, The Standard reported. The four drivers, 0.50 + 0.22 + 0.18 + 0.15, give 1.05 points before restraints.
OLED substitution then adds the 2.95-point price leg. Each a-Si LCD replaced by a flexible OLED lifts smartphone display value from USD 5.17 to USD 47.60, 9.2 times as much, and BOE expects flexible AMOLED phones to rise from 668 million in 2025 to 675 million in 2026.
What holds back smartphone display volumes as China’s handset market saturates?
Two restraints remove 0.20 points from Asia Pacific smartphone display volume growth, leaving 0.85% a year, and price erosion removes 0.50 points from the price leg. China’s saturation takes 0.12 points and longer phone lives 0.08 points.
China is the brake. The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) counted 282 million mobile phones shipped in China from January to November 2025, up just 0.9%, with 5G models at 86.6%, in its market report released on 26 December 2025. A market that flat leaves smartphone display growth in China to mix, not count, and China buys 45.6% of the region’s panels.
Longer lives remove 0.08 points: phones now get 5 to 7 years of software support, so owners in Japan, South Korea and Australia keep them longer, and refurbished handsets reuse their original screen. Price erosion is the third brake. Chinese flexible OLED capacity keeps like-for-like panel prices falling, which Douglas Insights books as 0.50 points a year against a 3.45-point mix gain, netting the 2.95-point price leg.
Why does China take 57.5% of Asia Pacific smartphone display value while India grows 6.40% a year?
China takes 57.5% of 2025 Asia Pacific smartphone display value, USD 14.0 billion, because it buys the most panels and the most flexible OLED. India grows fastest, 6.40% a year to USD 5.60 billion by 2035.
| Country or sub-region | Panels 2025 | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| China | 505.0 million | USD 14.0 billion | 57.5% | 3.20% | USD 19.1 billion |
| India | 232.0 million | USD 3.01 billion | 12.4% | 6.40% | USD 5.60 billion |
| Southeast Asia | 196.0 million | USD 2.79 billion | 11.5% | 5.60% | USD 4.82 billion |
| Japan | 52.0 million | USD 1.88 billion | 7.7% | 1.80% | USD 2.25 billion |
| South Korea | 27.5 million | USD 1.14 billion | 4.7% | 2.20% | USD 1.42 billion |
| Australia and New Zealand | 17.8 million | USD 661.0 million | 2.7% | 2.55% | USD 850.2 million |
| Rest of Asia Pacific | 78.0 million | USD 845.6 million | 3.5% | 5.30% | USD 1.42 billion |
China leads on 505.0 million panels at USD 27.64 each, because Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Honor and Apple sell flexible OLED phones in volume and the trade-in subsidy pulls replacements forward. Its growth, 3.20% a year, is all mix. India buys 232.0 million panels but pays only USD 12.99 each, as most phones there still use a-Si or LTPS LCD; its value rises 6.40% a year as OLED moves down to phones near INR 15,000.
Southeast Asia, at USD 2.79 billion, grows 5.60% a year as Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines move from LCD to OLED. Japan and South Korea pay the most per smartphone display, USD 36.22 and USD 41.53, because iPhone and Galaxy flagships dominate; they grow 1.80% and 2.20% a year. Australia and New Zealand pay USD 37.13. The rest of Asia Pacific, mainly Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Taiwan, holds USD 845.6 million and grows 5.30% a year. In the data table the row labelled Global holds the Asia Pacific total, USD 24.3 billion in 2025.
What price does a handset brand pay for each smartphone display panel?
A handset brand paid USD 21.93 on average per smartphone display panel in Asia Pacific in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from USD 5.17 for a-Si LCD to USD 151.85 for a foldable set. It rises 2.95% a year.
| Technology | Realised price per panel 2025 | Share of 2025 panels | Share of 2025 value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foldable OLED set | USD 151.85 | 1.0% | 7.3% |
| Flexible OLED | USD 47.60 | 30.2% | 65.6% |
| Rigid OLED | USD 16.89 | 11.5% | 8.9% |
| LTPS LCD | USD 10.80 | 18.5% | 9.1% |
| a-Si LCD | USD 5.17 | 38.7% | 9.1% |
The price per smartphone display rises because the mix moves upward, not because like-for-like panels get dearer. A flexible OLED panel costs 9.2 times an a-Si LCD, and a foldable set costs 6.9 times the regional average, so each buyer who trades up lifts the average. Douglas Insights projects USD 22.57 in 2026 and about USD 29.32 by 2035.
OLED panels, 42.8% of the 1.108 billion panels, earn 81.8% of value. That gap is why BOE and Visionox chase flexible OLED orders even at thin margins, and why blue emitter efficiency, covered in the OLED Blue Light Emitting Materials Market, matters to panel cost and lifetime.
Which subsidy rules and policy schemes shape smartphone display demand in China and India?
Three policies shape Asia Pacific smartphone display demand: China’s 2026 trade-in subsidy of 15% up to CNY 500, India’s INR 62,500 crore Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme, and India’s Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), which now funds display module assembly.
India’s Union Cabinet approved the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS), with an outlay of INR 62,500 crore over fiscal 2026-27 to 2030-31, in July 2026, replacing the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme that ended on 31 March 2026, per Business Today. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) approved the first seven ECMS projects, worth INR 5,532 crore and including camera module sub-assemblies, on 27 October 2025, All India Radio reported. On 17 August 2026 MeitY cleared 31 more proposals, including a thin-film transistor (TFT) display module plant by Minda Instruments, taking ECMS investment to about INR 69,548 crore across 15 states, The Machine Maker reported.
These rules move assembly, not panel making: India still imports its smartphone display glass from China and South Korea, so the schemes add Indian module value without changing which maker supplies the panel. China’s subsidy is volume-neutral over the decade but pulls replacement into 2026. Douglas Insights books China’s scheme as 0.15 points of volume and India’s schemes inside the 0.50-point India and Southeast Asia driver.
What if foldables spread faster: where does the Asia Pacific smartphone display forecast land in 2035?
The Asia Pacific smartphone display market ends 2035 between USD 29.0 billion and USD 41.4 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 35.4 billion. Foldable adoption and OLED’s spread in India set most of the spread.
| Case | Volume leg | Price leg | 2035 value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slower | -0.40% | 2.20% | USD 29.0 billion |
| Base case | 0.85% | 2.95% | USD 35.4 billion |
| Faster | 1.70% | 3.70% | USD 41.4 billion |
In the slower case China’s handset market shrinks after the subsidy ends, India keeps LCD in phones under INR 15,000, and Chinese capacity cuts flexible OLED prices faster. In the faster case foldables pass 5% of handsets in China, Japan and South Korea after the iPhone Duo launch and flexible OLED replaces LCD across India and Southeast Asia. One extra point of yearly panel volume growth adds USD 3.67 billion to 2035 smartphone display value.
Our 3.83% base sits above the 3.46% Douglas Insights uses for the smartphone display market worldwide, because India and Southeast Asia, both inside this region, are where OLED still has the most LCD to replace.
Douglas Exclusive: the Asia Pacific Smartphone Display Panel-Price Ledger
The Asia Pacific Smartphone Display Panel-Price Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 sourced inputs, 7 company disclosures and 5 government releases, setting each country’s panel count against the price its buyers realise per panel.
| Country or sub-region | Panels 2025 | Realised price per panel | Share of value added 2025-2035 |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Korea | 27.5 million | USD 41.53 | 2.5% |
| Australia and New Zealand | 17.8 million | USD 37.13 | 1.7% |
| Japan | 52.0 million | USD 36.22 | 3.3% |
| China | 505.0 million | USD 27.64 | 46.2% |
| Southeast Asia | 196.0 million | USD 14.26 | 18.1% |
| India | 232.0 million | USD 12.99 | 23.1% |
| Rest of Asia Pacific | 78.0 million | USD 10.84 | 5.1% |
The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: India, Southeast Asia and the rest of Asia Pacific hold 45.7% of 2025 smartphone display panels but only 27.4% of value, yet they supply 46.3% of the USD 11.2 billion that country rows add by 2035. China supplies 46.2%. The ledger’s inputs include BOE’s 150 million AMOLED panels, CAICT’s 282 million China shipments and Tianma’s CNY 36.227 billion revenue; per-panel prices are our estimates. The low-price rows are where smartphone display growth now comes from.
How does the methodology turn 1.108 billion panels into USD 24.3 billion of smartphone display value?
How this report is built
- Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
- Seven regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
- The next scheduled review of this study is April 2027.
- Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.
Our methodology multiplies 1.108 billion smartphone display panels sold into Asia Pacific in 2025 by an average realised price of USD 21.93 to reach USD 24.3 billion. Units come from seven country builds; prices from five technologies.
The model covers 7 countries and sub-regions, 5 technologies and 2 buyer types, and uses 47 data points, 12 sourced and 35 modelled. Arithmetic: 1,108.3 million x USD 21.93 = USD 24.30 billion; 24.30 x (1.0085 x 1.0295)^10 = 35.37, or USD 35.4 billion. Panels reach 1.118 billion in 2026 and 1.206 billion in 2035.
Two cross-checks agree. First, our USD 24.3 billion is 52.5% of the USD 46.26 billion Douglas Insights global total, and our 1.108 billion panels are 53.0% of 2.093 billion global panels, consistent with the region’s share of world handset sales. Second, China’s 505.0 million panels against CAICT’s 282 million phones for January to November 2025, about 308 million for the year, implies 1.64 panels per phone, close to the global ratio of 1.67 once spares and foldables are counted. Wearable panels are sized separately in our Asia Pacific Smart Wearable Market report.

What counts in the Asia Pacific smartphone display market, and what is excluded?
The Asia Pacific smartphone display market counts panel-maker revenue from new smartphone display panels sold to handset makers and the repair channel for phones sold in the region. Tablet, watch, laptop and car panels stay out.
The by-technology split covers flexible OLED, foldable OLED, rigid OLED, LTPS LCD and a-Si LCD. The by-buyer split covers handset makers and the repair channel, which together bought 1.108 billion panels in 2025. The by-country split covers China, India, Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, and the rest of Asia Pacific. Value is counted at the ex-fab panel price with touch layers when the panel maker bonds them. Display driver chips sold separately, cover glass, handset assembly margins and second-hand screens are excluded from this smartphone display sizing.
