PPG grew Performance Coatings net sales about 5.3% to USD 5.51 billion in 2025 while its Industrial Coatings sales fell to USD 6.52 billion, its results of 27 January 2026 show, and AkzoNobel and Axalta won European Commission approval for their merger, to be called Axanzo, Axalta’s release states. The polyurethane coatings market covers liquid and high-solids coatings whose binder cures through urethane links: two-component (2K) polyol-isocyanate systems, one-component moisture-cure and blocked systems, waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUD) and urethane-acrylates. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 22.55 billion in 2025, from about 4.85 million tonnes at an average USD 4,650 a tonne, and at USD 36.91 billion in 2035, a 5.05% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits beside our Polyurethane Market, Industrial Floor Coating Market and Polyurethane Waterproof Coating Market reports inside our specialty chemicals coverage, and every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.

Which polyurethane coatings end use is largest: automotive, industrial or wood?

Automotive OEM and refinish is the largest end use, 27.0% of 2025 polyurethane coatings value or USD 6.09 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Construction, flooring and waterproofing grows fastest, at 6.4% a year to USD 6.71 billion by 2035.

End use Share 2025 Value 2025 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
Automotive OEM and refinish 27.0% USD 6.09 billion 4.3% USD 9.28 billion
Industrial and protective 24.0% USD 5.41 billion 5.0% USD 8.82 billion
Wood and furniture 18.0% USD 4.06 billion 4.4% USD 6.24 billion
Construction, flooring and waterproofing 16.0% USD 3.61 billion 6.4% USD 6.71 billion
Aerospace, marine and rail 7.0% USD 1.58 billion 5.9% USD 2.80 billion
Coil, packaging and other 8.0% USD 1.80 billion 5.3% USD 3.02 billion

Automotive leads because the clearcoat on almost every car is a 2K acrylic-polyurethane, cross-linked with aliphatic hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) trimers that keep gloss for a decade in sunlight, and because every body-shop repair in Europe and North America uses the same chemistry. Refinish alone is about 55% of the automotive line, about USD 3.35 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate. Industrial and protective coatings, USD 5.41 billion, use aliphatic polyurethane topcoats over epoxy primers on steel bridges, tanks, wind towers and machinery, the classic three-coat system for 15 to 25 years of corrosion protection.

Wood and furniture, USD 4.06 billion, covers 2K and waterborne lacquers for cabinets, flooring and parquet; it grows 4.4% a year as Asian furniture makers move from nitrocellulose to polyurethane. Construction, flooring and waterproofing, USD 3.61 billion, grows fastest at 6.4% on roof and podium waterproofing, car-park decks and seamless industrial floors. Aerospace, marine and rail grow 5.9%. End-use values for 2035 sum to USD 36.87 billion, 0.11% below the USD 36.91 billion headline.

How does polyurethane coatings value split by technology: solventborne, waterborne or high-solids?

Solventborne 2K systems still hold about 46.0% of 2025 polyurethane coatings value, about USD 10.37 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Waterborne dispersions and 2K waterborne hold 31.0%, about USD 6.99 billion, and grow fastest.

The technology split is the second axis of the model. High-solids and 100%-solids systems, including polyaspartic and moisture-cure floor and roof coatings, hold about 15.0%, about USD 3.38 billion. Urethane-acrylates cured by ultraviolet light hold about 8.0%, about USD 1.80 billion, mostly on wood flooring, plastics and electronics. All four shares are Douglas Insights estimates built from volatile organic compound (VOC) limits by country and the reported technology mix of the largest coatings makers.

Waterborne grows about 7.0% a year in our base case, against about 3.2% for solventborne, because volatile-content limits in China, the European Union and California keep tightening and because PUD binders now match solventborne hardness on furniture and floors. By 2035 waterborne reaches about 38.0% of value and solventborne falls to about 39.0%, Douglas Insights estimates. The shift moves value toward resin makers that sell dispersions and hydrophilic isocyanates rather than standard trimers.

What drives polyurethane coatings growth: infrastructure, vehicles, wind or furniture?

Polyurethane coatings volume grows 3.60% a year in our base case, from about 4.85 million tonnes in 2025 to 6.91 million tonnes in 2035. Four drivers add 4.40 gross points; restraints remove 0.80.

Infrastructure, protective and wind steel: 1.20 points

Protective coatings on steel are worth 1.20 points. PPG’s Performance Coatings segment, which includes protective and marine, aerospace and refinish, grew net sales to USD 5.51 billion in 2025 from USD 5.24 billion, about 5.3%, while the company as a whole was flat at USD 15.9 billion with organic sales up 2%, its release of 27 January 2026 shows. Douglas Insights estimates protective uses consumed about 1.05 million tonnes of polyurethane coatings in 2025, growing 4.8% a year as bridges, pipelines, liquefied natural gas tanks and wind towers specify aliphatic polyurethane topcoats for 20-year maintenance cycles.

Construction floors, roofs and waterproofing: 1.30 points

Construction is the largest driver, worth 1.30 points. Seamless polyurethane and polyaspartic floors in warehouses, food plants and car parks, and liquid-applied polyurethane membranes on roofs and podiums, consumed about 0.92 million tonnes in 2025, a Douglas Insights estimate, growing 6.0% a year in volume. Sherwin-Williams grew its Paint Stores Group sales about 3.2% to USD 13.61 billion in 2025 while consolidated sales rose 2.1% to USD 23.57 billion, its 2025 Form 10-K shows, evidence that professional contractor demand held up even as do-it-yourself paint stayed weak. Data-centre and logistics floors in the US and India add the fastest square metres.

Vehicle refinish and new-vehicle clearcoats: 1.00 point

Vehicles add 1.00 point. Axalta, the largest refinish supplier, reported 2025 net sales of USD 5.12 billion against USD 5.28 billion in 2024, with fourth-quarter refinish sales of USD 509 million, down 7%, and Mobility Coatings up 1% to USD 471 million, its results of 10 February 2026 show. Douglas Insights reads the refinish dip as distributor destocking, not lower repair volume; collisions per vehicle and the ageing vehicle fleet keep refinish clearcoat tonnes rising about 2.5% a year, and Chinese and Indian vehicle output lifts OEM clearcoat tonnes about 3.5%.

Waterborne wood and furniture finishes: 0.90 points

Furniture and wood add the last 0.90 points, as Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian factories replace nitrocellulose and alkyd lacquers with 2K and waterborne polyurethane to meet export customers’ rules, a Douglas Insights estimate. Summed, 1.20 + 1.30 + 1.00 + 0.90 = 4.40 points; after 0.80 points of restraints the 3.60% volume leg times the 1.40% price leg gives the 5.05% revenue rate.

What holds back polyurethane coatings: isocyanate rules, feedstock swings or substitutes?

Three restraints remove 0.80 points a year from polyurethane coatings volume growth: diisocyanate handling rules take 0.30 points, substitution by powder, epoxy-polysiloxane and polyaspartic-free systems 0.30 points and isocyanate feedstock swings 0.20 points, Douglas Insights estimates.

Diisocyanate rules are the sharpest drag on small users. Since 24 August 2023 every professional or industrial user in the European Union handling a product with 0.1% or more of free monomeric diisocyanates must complete certified training, under the restriction that Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/1149 added to REACH Annex XVII. Large body shops and coating lines absorbed the cost; small flooring and roofing contractors in some cases switched to epoxy or acrylic, a Douglas Insights estimate that costs about 0.30 points a year.

Substitution takes another 0.30 points: powder coatings take share on metal furniture and agricultural equipment, and epoxy-polysiloxane hybrids challenge polyurethane topcoats in protective systems. Feedstock volatility takes 0.20 points. Covestro, the largest maker of HDI-based coatings hardeners, saw 2025 sales fall 8.7% to EUR 12.9 billion and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) drop to EUR 740 million from about EUR 1.1 billion, Gasgoo reported from its annual report on 11 March 2026; weak isocyanate margins keep Western capacity under review.

Where are polyurethane coatings used most: Asia Pacific, Europe or North America?

Asia Pacific uses the most, about USD 10.60 billion or 47.0% of 2025 polyurethane coatings value. The Middle East and Africa grow fastest, at 6.0% a year to USD 2.42 billion by 2035, on Gulf infrastructure and protective work.

Region Value 2025 Share 2025 Value 2026 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
Asia Pacific USD 10.60 billion 47.0% USD 11.22 billion 5.9% USD 18.80 billion
Europe USD 4.96 billion 22.0% USD 5.15 billion 3.8% USD 7.20 billion
North America USD 4.28 billion 19.0% USD 4.46 billion 4.2% USD 6.47 billion
Latin America USD 1.35 billion 6.0% USD 1.42 billion 5.0% USD 2.20 billion
Middle East and Africa USD 1.35 billion 6.0% USD 1.43 billion 6.0% USD 2.42 billion

Asia Pacific leads because China builds about a third of the world’s vehicles and most of its furniture, and because Wanhua Chemical, the largest maker of isocyanates, sits there. Wanhua’s 2025 revenue rose 11.62% to RMB 203.235 billion while attributable net profit fell 3.88% to RMB 12.527 billion, ECHEMI reported from its preliminary annual figures on 19 March 2026, a sign of higher volume at lower margins. India and Southeast Asia grow fastest inside the region, at about 8.0% a year, Douglas Insights estimates.

Europe, USD 4.96 billion, grows only 3.8% a year, held back by weak vehicle output and the training rule; its strength is refinish and protective work. North America, USD 4.28 billion, grows 4.2% on data-centre floors, infrastructure repainting and aerospace. Latin America grows 5.0% on Brazilian and Mexican vehicles and furniture, and the Middle East and Africa 6.0%. Regional values sum to USD 23.69 billion in 2026, 0.02% above the headline, and USD 37.10 billion in 2035, 0.51% above it.

Who supplies polyurethane coatings, and how is ownership changing?

Sherwin-Williams, PPG, AkzoNobel, Axalta and the former BASF Coatings, now Surventis, lead the formulators. Covestro and Wanhua lead the isocyanate hardeners, and two of those seven changed owners between December 2025 and June 2026.

Company Position in polyurethane coatings Latest filed or stated figure
Sherwin-Williams Protective, floor, wood, automotive refinish 2025 net sales USD 23.57 billion; Performance Coatings Group USD 6.80 billion
PPG Industries Automotive OEM and refinish, aerospace, protective 2025 net sales USD 15.9 billion; Performance Coatings USD 5.51 billion
Axalta Refinish leader, mobility and industrial 2025 net sales USD 5.12 billion
AkzoNobel Refinish, protective, marine, wood Merger with Axalta approved by shareholders 5 August 2026
Surventis (formerly BASF Coatings) Automotive OEM and refinish Sold to Carlyle 30 June 2026, enterprise value EUR 7.7 billion
Covestro HDI, isophorone diisocyanate and PUD raw materials 2025 sales EUR 12.9 billion; owned by XRG since December 2025
Wanhua Chemical MDI, TDI, HDI and aliphatic isocyanates 2025 revenue RMB 203.235 billion

Consolidation is the main story. AkzoNobel and Axalta agreed an all-stock merger of equals on 18 November 2025, with combined revenue of about USD 17 billion and about USD 600 million of run-rate savings, their joint release states; shareholders of both approved it on 5 August 2026, Axalta’s release shows. The European Commission’s conditional approval requires AkzoNobel to sell its European vehicle refinish business, with closing expected in early 2027, Axalta’s release states.

BASF completed the sale of its coatings business to Carlyle on 30 June 2026 at an enterprise value of EUR 7.7 billion, receiving about EUR 5.8 billion in pre-tax cash and keeping a 40% stake in Surventis, Spray Foam Magazine reported on 2 July 2026. On the raw-material side, XRG, the international investment arm of ADNOC, finalised its takeover offer for Covestro and completed a EUR 1.17 billion capital increase, ChemAnalyst reported on 12 December 2025. Other suppliers include Nippon Paint, Kansai Paint, Jotun, Hempel, RPM International, Asian Paints, Allnex and Evonik.

What does a tonne of polyurethane coating cost, and what moves the price?

A tonne of polyurethane coating sold for about USD 4,650 on world average in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from USD 2,900 for Chinese wood lacquer to above USD 15,000 for aerospace topcoats. Price adds 1.40% a year.

The spread follows performance. Industrial wood lacquers and floor coatings sit at USD 2,500 to 4,000 a tonne; protective topcoats at USD 5,000 to 8,000; automotive refinish clearcoats, sold through distributors in small cans, at USD 9,000 to 14,000; and aerospace polyurethane topcoats higher still, all Douglas Insights estimates. The isocyanate hardener is the costliest input, typically 25% to 40% of raw-material cost in a 2K system, and aliphatic HDI and isophorone diisocyanate trimers cost several times aromatic MDI per kilogram.

Price direction follows hardener cost and the mix shift. Covestro’s 8.7% sales fall in 2025, reported by Gasgoo on 11 March 2026, reflected lower isocyanate prices that formulators did not fully pass on, which protected their margins. Douglas Insights holds the price leg at 1.40% a year because the mix shift to waterborne, high-solids and refinish grades raises value per tonne even if isocyanate prices stay flat; the average reaches about USD 4,715 in 2026 and USD 5,344 in 2035.

How do REACH, VOC limits and worker-safety rules regulate polyurethane coatings?

REACH Annex XVII entry 74 has required certified diisocyanate training for EU professional users since 24 August 2023. VOC limits in the EU, China and California set the pace of the shift to waterborne and high-solids polyurethane.

The European rule is the most specific. Regulation (EU) 2020/1149 of 3 August 2020 restricts diisocyanates in concentrations of 0.1% or more unless the user has completed training covering dermal and inhalation exposure, renewed at least every five years. Low-monomer hardeners, below 0.1% free isocyanate, avoid the trigger, and Douglas Insights estimates more than half of European 2K hardener volume now uses them.

VOC rules shape technology choice. The EU Decorative Paints Directive 2004/42/EC caps the volatile content of two-pack reactive performance coatings and vehicle refinishing products, and China’s mandatory GB 30981-2020 standard sets VOC limits for industrial protective coatings by type, applied from 1 December 2020, under the national standards system. In the US the South Coast Air Quality Management District sets the strictest local limits. Douglas Insights expects no ban on polyurethane coatings, only tighter exposure and VOC limits that favour low-monomer and waterborne grades.

What if construction booms or vehicle demand stalls: how large is the polyurethane coatings market in 2035?

The polyurethane coatings market ends 2035 between USD 30.35 billion and USD 43.94 billion across three cases, around a USD 36.91 billion base. Construction and vehicle output set most of the spread.

Case Volume leg Price leg Revenue rate 2035 value
Slower 2.40% 0.60% 3.01% USD 30.35 billion
Base case 3.60% 1.40% 5.05% USD 36.91 billion
Faster 4.70% 2.10% 6.90% USD 43.94 billion

In the slower case vehicle output in Europe and China stalls, Chinese property stays weak and powder and epoxy take more share, removing 1.20 points from volume and 0.80 points from price. In the faster case Indian and Gulf infrastructure, data-centre floors and wind steel grow faster and the AkzoNobel-Axalta combination lifts refinish pricing, adding 1.10 points to volume and 0.70 points to price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 3.67 billion to 2035 value, and one point less removes about USD 3.37 billion, Douglas Insights estimates.

Company signals bracket the base. PPG guided organic sales flat to up low single digits for 2026 in its 27 January 2026 release, while Wanhua grew revenue 11.62% on volume. Our 5.05% sits between Western formulators’ flat organic growth and Asian volume growth.

Douglas Exclusive: the Polyurethane Coatings Ownership Map

The Polyurethane Coatings Ownership Map is a Douglas Insights model built from 9 inputs: 7 company releases or filings and 2 trade-press reports of results. It tracks who owns polyurethane coatings formulators and hardener plants by early 2027.

Date Input What it moves
18 November 2025 AkzoNobel and Axalta agree merger, about USD 17 billion revenue Refinish and industrial formulators
12 December 2025 XRG completes Covestro offer, EUR 1.17 billion capital increase HDI and PUD hardeners
27 January 2026 PPG 2025 net sales USD 15.9 billion, flat Automotive and aerospace
29 January 2026 Sherwin-Williams 2025 net sales USD 23.57 billion, up 2.1% Protective, floor and wood
10 February 2026 Axalta 2025 net sales USD 5.12 billion Refinish
11 March 2026 Covestro 2025 sales EUR 12.9 billion, down 8.7% Hardener margins
19 March 2026 Wanhua 2025 revenue RMB 203.235 billion, up 11.62% Isocyanate supply
30 June 2026 BASF Coatings sold to Carlyle, becomes Surventis Automotive OEM and refinish
Early 2027 (expected) Axanzo closing after EU-required refinish divestment European refinish

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: once Axanzo closes, the four largest Western formulators, Sherwin-Williams, Axanzo, PPG and Surventis, will hold about 45% of polyurethane coatings value outside China, against about 38% in 2024, while the two largest hardener suppliers, Covestro and Wanhua, are now owned by a Gulf state investor and a Chinese listed group. Polyurethane coatings therefore enter 2027 more concentrated at the formulator level and more exposed to non-Western ownership at the isocyanate level.

The EU-required sale of AkzoNobel’s European vehicle refinish business is the one input that pushes the other way: it creates a new mid-sized refinish supplier in Europe, which Douglas Insights estimates at about USD 0.9 billion of revenue, and keeps four or more refinish brands competing for European body shops.

How does the methodology turn 4.85 million tonnes into USD 22.55 billion?

How this report is built

  • Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
  • Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
  • The next scheduled review of this study is May 2027.
  • Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.

Our methodology multiplies about 4.85 million tonnes of polyurethane coatings sold in 2025 by a world-average USD 4,650 a tonne to reach USD 22.55 billion, then grows volume 3.60% and price 1.40% a year.

The model covers 6 end uses, 4 technologies and 5 regions, using 58 data points, 19 sourced and 39 modelled. Volume comes from vehicle output and repair rates, floor and roof area, protective steel tonnage, furniture output and isocyanate hardener demand; price comes from end-use price bands and company segment data, all Douglas Insights estimates. Arithmetic: 4.85 million tonnes x USD 4,650 = USD 22.55 billion; USD 22.55 billion x (1.0360 x 1.0140)^10 = USD 36.91 billion. Volume reaches about 5.02 million tonnes in 2026 and 6.91 million tonnes in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, polyurethane coatings of USD 22.55 billion equal about 12% of a world paint and coatings industry that the largest formulators’ combined sales place near USD 190 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate consistent with polyurethane’s share of industrial binders. Second, at about 30% hardener content by weight in 2K systems, our tonnes imply about 0.9 million tonnes of aliphatic and aromatic isocyanate into coatings, within the range implied by Covestro’s and Wanhua’s coatings-grade capacity. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our editorial standards explain.
