China made 109.24 million household refrigerators in 2025, up 1.6%, and 266.98 million air conditioners, up 0.7%, while retail sales of household appliances rose 11.0%, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) 2025 statistical communiqué of 28 February 2026 shows, helped by a CNY 300 billion consumer trade-in programme. The color coated board for home appliances market covers pre-painted and film-laminated steel sheet sold to appliance makers for refrigerator side panels and doors, washing machine and dryer cabinets, air conditioner casings, and oven, microwave and dishwasher panels: pre-coated metal (PCM), vinyl-coated and PET film-laminated metal (VCM), and printed or embossed decorative steel. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 7.56 billion in 2025, about 7.20 million tonnes at an average USD 1,050 a tonne, rising to USD 7.86 billion in 2026 and USD 11.2 billion in 2035, a 4.03% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits beside our Polyurethane Coatings Market, Mineral Wool Steel Sandwich Panel Market and Smart Home Market reports, and every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.

Which appliance uses the most color coated board: refrigerators, washing machines or air conditioners?

Refrigerators and freezers use the most color coated board, 38.0% of 2025 value or about USD 2.87 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Air conditioners and cooking appliances grow fastest, 4.4% a year each, through 2035.

Appliance Tonnes 2025 Value 2025 Share 2025 CAGR 2025-2035 Value 2035
Refrigerators and freezers 2.74 million USD 2.87 billion 38.0% 3.8% USD 4.17 billion
Washing machines and dryers 1.73 million USD 1.81 billion 24.0% 3.9% USD 2.66 billion
Air conditioners 1.58 million USD 1.66 billion 22.0% 4.4% USD 2.56 billion
Ovens, microwaves and dishwashers 792,000 USD 832 million 11.0% 4.4% USD 1.28 billion
Water heaters and other appliances 360,000 USD 378 million 5.0% 3.8% USD 549 million

Refrigerators lead because each one carries two large side panels and, on many models, steel doors, about 13 kg of coated sheet per unit, a Douglas Insights estimate, across roughly 210 million refrigerators and freezers built worldwide in 2025. China alone built 109.24 million, the NBS communiqué shows, so its plants consume about 1.42 million tonnes. Value grows 3.8% a year to USD 4.17 billion as French-door and built-in models with larger steel doors gain share.

Washing machines and dryers, USD 1.81 billion, use about 10 kg of coated cabinet steel per unit. Air conditioners, USD 1.66 billion, use about 4.5 kg per unit, mostly on outdoor-unit casings, and grow 4.4% a year as hot-climate markets in India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East buy their first units. Cooking appliances and dishwashers add USD 832 million. Appliance values for 2035 sum to USD 11.2 billion, 0.05% below the headline.

How does color coated board split between PCM, VCM film laminates and decorative printed steel?

Pre-coated metal (PCM) takes about 62% of 2025 value, roughly USD 4.69 billion; VCM and PET film laminates take about 28%, and printed, embossed and anti-fingerprint decorative steel about 10%, Douglas Insights estimates.

PCM dominates because a two-coat polyester or polyurethane line runs at 100 to 150 metres a minute and costs least per square metre, which suits washer cabinets, air conditioner casings and the hidden sides of refrigerators. VCM, steel laminated with a PVC or PET film, costs about 30% to 50% more per tonne but delivers glass-like gloss, wood or stone patterns and scratch resistance for refrigerator doors, Douglas Insights estimates. Decorative printed and anti-fingerprint steel is the smallest product group but the fastest growing, at about 6% a year, as premium Chinese and Korean brands push stainless-look finishes without the cost of stainless steel.

Coil coaters sit inside the steel groups. JSW Steel reported colour-coated product capacity of 0.60 million tonnes a year at Vasind, 0.60 million at Kalmeshwar, 0.31 million at Rajpura, 0.28 million at Tarapur and smaller lines at Khopoli, Bawal, Dhar and Pulwama, about 2.42 million tonnes in total, in its Annual Report 2025-26; appliance grades are one slice of that capacity, alongside roofing and building panels.

What drives color coated board demand: China’s trade-in subsidies, first-time buyers or premium finishes?

Revenue rises 4.03% a year in our base case: tonnes add 3.00% and price per tonne 1.00%. Four drivers add 3.40 gross points to tonnage growth before 0.40 points of restraints, Douglas Insights estimates.

China’s appliance trade-in programme: 1.00 point

Subsidies are the largest near-term driver. China fully disbursed CNY 300 billion of central funding from ultra-long special treasury bonds for consumer trade-ins in 2025, and by the end of August 330 million consumers had claimed subsidies on sales above CNY 2 trillion, the State Council information office reported on 30 September 2025. The National Development and Reform Commission planned CNY 250 billion for 2026 and said 2025 trade-in sales exceeded CNY 2.6 trillion, gov.cn reported on 10 April 2026. Midea Group’s revenue rose 12.1% to CNY 458.5 billion in 2025, its annual results filed with the Hong Kong exchange on 30 March 2026 show. We give this leg 1.00 point.

First-time buyers in India and Southeast Asia: 1.00 point

Emerging markets add 1.00 point. India’s crude steel output rose 10.4% to 164.9 million tonnes in 2025, the World Steel Association reported on 23 January 2026, and worldsteel expects Indian steel demand to grow 7.9% to 172.4 million tonnes in 2026 and 8.0% to 186.2 million tonnes in 2027, its Short Range Outlook of 12 October 2026 shows. Household penetration of refrigerators and air conditioners in India and Indonesia remains well below Chinese levels, a Douglas Insights estimate, so each point of penetration adds several million units a year.

Shift from post-painted steel and plastic to pre-painted sheet: 0.80 points

Process change adds 0.80 points. Appliance plants that paint formed parts themselves need spray lines, ovens and solvent permits; buying pre-painted coil removes them, and Douglas Insights estimates that about 55% of appliance cabinet steel is now pre-painted, rising about 1 point of share a year. Whirlpool’s net sales fell 6.5% to USD 15.5 billion in 2025 and it cut USD 200 million of costs “helping to mitigate the impact of tariffs”, its results of 28 January 2026 state, the kind of cost pressure that favours outsourced coating.

Premium finishes: 0.60 points

Premium finishes add 0.60 points of tonnage-equivalent value. Haier Smart Home’s revenue rose 5.71% to CNY 302.35 billion in 2025, the company reported on 26 March 2026, with high-end brands growing faster than the group. Summed, 1.00 + 1.00 + 0.80 + 0.60 = 3.40 points; after 0.40 points of restraints the tonnage leg is 3.00%, and 1.030 x 1.010 gives the 4.03% revenue rate.

What slows color coated board volumes: trade barriers, subsidy fatigue or substitute materials?

Two restraints remove 0.40 points a year: tariffs and trade defence on coated steel take 0.20 points, and substitution by plastic, glass and stainless panels 0.20 points, Douglas Insights estimates.

Trade barriers are rising. The United States raised Section 232 tariffs on steel and steel derivatives from 25% to 50% from 4 June 2025, a presidential proclamation of 3 June 2025 states. The US Commerce Department issued affirmative final anti-dumping and countervailing duty determinations on corrosion-resistant steel from 10 countries, covering about USD 2.9 billion of imports, on 26 August 2025, and the US International Trade Commission voted affirmatively on injury for all 10 on 25 September 2025. These measures shift where coil is coated more than they cut total tonnage.

Subsidy fatigue is the larger medium-term risk. China’s 2026 trade-in budget of CNY 250 billion is 16.7% below 2025’s CNY 300 billion, a Douglas Insights calculation from the April 2026 NDRC figures, and purchases pulled forward in 2025 may leave a gap in 2027. Glass-front refrigerator doors and plastic washer tops also take some panels away from steel.

Which region buys the most color coated board for appliances: Asia Pacific, Europe or North America?

Asia Pacific buys the most color coated board for appliances, about USD 4.76 billion or 63.0% of 2025 value. The Middle East and Africa grows fastest, 5.0% a year, while Asia Pacific reaches USD 7.33 billion by 2035.

Region Value 2025 Share 2025 Value 2026 CAGR 2025-2035 Value 2035
Asia Pacific USD 4.76 billion 63.0% USD 4.97 billion 4.4% USD 7.33 billion
Europe USD 983 million 13.0% USD 1.01 billion 3.0% USD 1.32 billion
North America USD 907 million 12.0% USD 934 million 3.0% USD 1.22 billion
Middle East and Africa USD 529 million 7.0% USD 556 million 5.0% USD 862 million
Latin America USD 378 million 5.0% USD 393 million 4.0% USD 560 million

Asia Pacific leads because China builds roughly half the world’s refrigerators and most of its air conditioners, and Korean, Japanese, Thai and Indian plants add more. China’s 109.24 million refrigerators and 266.98 million air conditioners in 2025, from the NBS communiqué, alone account for about 2.62 million tonnes of coated sheet, a Douglas Insights estimate. LG Electronics’ home appliance company earned KRW 26.13 trillion of revenue and KRW 1.28 trillion of operating profit in 2025, its results of 30 January 2026 show, much of it from plants in Korea, Vietnam, India and Mexico.

Europe, USD 983 million, grows 3.0% a year; Electrolux Group’s net sales fell to SEK 131.3 billion in 2025 from SEK 136.2 billion, though organic growth turned positive at 2.0% in the fourth quarter, its year-end report of 30 January 2026 shows. North America, USD 907 million, also grows 3.0% as tariffs pull coating back into US and Mexican plants. The Middle East and Africa, USD 529 million, grows 5.0% on air conditioner demand, and Latin America, USD 378 million, 4.0%. Regional values sum to USD 11.3 billion in 2035, 0.58% above the headline.

Which companies lead the color coated board for home appliances market, and how concentrated is supply?

China Baowu’s Baosteel leads color coated appliance board with about 9% of 2025 value, a Douglas Insights estimate, ahead of POSCO at about 6% and Dongkuk CM at 5%. The eight largest coaters hold only 35%.

Company Base and focus Latest figure reviewed Estimated share 2025
Baosteel (China Baowu) Shanghai, China; PCM and VCM for Chinese appliance makers No 2025-26 appliance-steel figure reviewed 9.0%

Buyers are more concentrated than suppliers. Midea’s Smart Home business alone earned CNY 299.9 billion in 2025, up 11.3%, its HKEX filing of 30 March 2026 shows, and Midea, Haier, Gree, LG, Samsung, Whirlpool and Electrolux together buy more than half of all appliance coated board, a Douglas Insights estimate. That buying power keeps coater margins thin and pushes suppliers to build lines next to appliance plants.

Samsung Electronics reported 2025 revenue of KRW 333.6 trillion and said fourth-quarter earnings of its digital appliance business fell on low seasonal air conditioner demand, its results of 29 January 2026 state. Hundreds of regional coil coaters in China, Turkey, Vietnam and India, often owned by appliance groups themselves, share the remaining 65%.

What does color coated board cost per tonne, and why is the average price rising?

Color coated appliance board sells for an average USD 1,050 a tonne in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 850 for Chinese PCM to over USD 1,600 for PET-laminated door steel, rising 1.00% a year to USD 1,160 by 2035.

Substrate steel sets the floor. World crude steel output fell 2.0% to 1.85 billion tonnes in 2025 and China’s fell 4.4% to 960.8 million tonnes, worldsteel reported on 23 January 2026, and worldsteel sees global demand flat at 1.72 billion tonnes in 2026, its October 2026 outlook shows. With Chinese mills still exporting surplus, hot-rolled and galvanized substrate prices stay low, so coating, film and service add most of the price gap between markets.

Mix lifts the average. Each point of share moving from PCM to VCM film laminate adds about USD 5 a tonne to the average, Douglas Insights estimates, and the tariff wall in the United States adds a regional premium of USD 300 to USD 500 a tonne over Asian prices, a Douglas Insights estimate. Our 1.00% price leg comes from mix; underlying steel prices are assumed flat in real terms.

What if China’s subsidies fade or emerging markets boom: how large is the color coated board market in 2035?

The color coated board for home appliances market ends 2035 between USD 8.52 billion and USD 13.9 billion across three cases, around a USD 11.2 billion base. Chinese demand after subsidies and Indian growth set most of the spread.

Case Tonnage leg Price leg Revenue rate 2035 value
Slower 1.20% 0.00% 1.20% USD 8.52 billion
Base case 3.00% 1.00% 4.03% USD 11.2 billion
Faster 4.40% 1.80% 6.28% USD 13.9 billion

In the slower case China’s trade-in programme ends after 2026, domestic appliance sales fall back for two years and trade disputes force duplicate coating lines, cutting tonnage growth by 1.80 points and leaving prices flat, a Douglas Insights scenario. In the faster case India, Indonesia and the Gulf add air conditioners and refrigerators faster than expected and premium film laminates spread to mid-range models, adding 1.40 points to tonnage and 0.80 points to price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 1.05 billion to 2035 value.

Live signals favour the base case. China funded a third 2026 batch of CNY 62.5 billion and trade-in sales passed CNY 1 trillion by 20 June 2026, gov.cn reported on 27 June 2026, while worldsteel’s October 2026 outlook keeps Indian steel demand growing near 8% a year.

Which rules shape color coated board trade, from US Section 232 tariffs to the EU steel measure and CBAM?

Three rule sets shape color coated board trade: US Section 232 tariffs at 50% from June 2025 plus coated-steel duties, the EU’s 2026 steel measure, and the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) from 1 January 2026.

In the United States, the 50% Section 232 tariff covers steel and steel derivatives from 4 June 2025, and the corrosion-resistant steel orders confirmed by the USITC on 25 September 2025 cover Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Africa, Taiwan, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam. The European Commission proposed on 7 October 2025 to cut tariff-free steel import quotas by 47% to 18.3 million tonnes a year and double the out-of-quota duty to 50%, replacing the safeguard that expires in June 2026, its announcement states.

CBAM “successfully entered into force on 1 January 2026”, with more than 4,100 operators authorised as declarants by 7 January, the European Commission’s tax directorate said on 14 January 2026; imported coated steel now carries a carbon cost, which favours European coaters and low-emission substrate. Chemistry rules matter too: the European Chemicals Agency widened its chromium(VI) restriction work to more substances, with the proposal due by 11 April 2025, it announced on 8 May 2024, pushing coil lines to chromate-free pretreatment.

Douglas Exclusive: the Appliance Panel Tonnage Tracker

The Appliance Panel Tonnage Tracker is a Douglas Insights model built from 14 inputs: 1 statistics release, 3 trade-in notices, 2 worldsteel releases, 4 trade and climate rules and 4 company reports. It turns appliance output into steel tonnes.

Date Input What it moves
3 June 2025 White House: Section 232 at 50% US import cost
26 August 2025 US Commerce: coated steel AD/CVD, USD 2.9 billion US supply
30 September 2025 gov.cn: CNY 300 billion trade-in fully disbursed Chinese units
7 October 2025 European Commission: quota cut 47% to 18.3 Mt EU supply
14 January 2026 DG TAXUD: CBAM definitive phase live EU import cost
23 January 2026 worldsteel: 2025 output 1.85 billion tonnes Substrate supply
28 January 2026 Whirlpool: sales USD 15.5 billion US units
30 January 2026 LG Electronics: HS revenue KRW 26.13 trillion Korean units
28 February 2026 NBS: 109.24 m refrigerators, 266.98 m air conditioners Chinese units
26 March 2026 Haier: revenue CNY 302.35 billion Premium mix
30 March 2026 Midea: revenue CNY 458.5 billion Chinese units
10 April 2026 NDRC: CNY 250 billion for 2026 Chinese units
27 June 2026 gov.cn: trade-in sales above CNY 1 trillion Chinese units
12 October 2026 worldsteel: India demand up 7.9% in 2026 Indian units

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: China’s 2025 refrigerators at 13 kg and air conditioners at 4.5 kg of coated sheet a unit equal about 2.62 million tonnes, 36% of world demand from just two product lines in one country. Because the 2026 trade-in budget is 16.7% smaller, every 1% fall in Chinese refrigerator and air conditioner output removes about 26,000 tonnes, or about USD 27 million of coated board demand.

The tracker shows the market’s growth centre moving: Chinese tonnage grows only about 2% a year after the subsidy peak, while India and Southeast Asia, starting from a much smaller base, grow 7% to 9%. Coaters with lines in India, Vietnam, Thailand and Mexico, close to new appliance plants and inside tariff walls, gain most.

How does the methodology turn 7.20 million tonnes into USD 7.56 billion?

How this report is built

  • Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
  • Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
  • The next scheduled review of this study is May 2027.
  • Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.

Our methodology multiplies 7.20 million tonnes of color coated appliance board by an average USD 1,050 a tonne to reach USD 7.56 billion in 2025, then grows tonnage 3.00% and price per tonne 1.00% a year to 2035.

The model covers 5 appliance groups, 3 product types and 5 regions, using 64 data points, 22 sourced and 42 modelled. Tonnage starts from appliance output, NBS data for China and Douglas Insights estimates elsewhere, multiplied by coated-steel weight per unit: about 13 kg for refrigerators, 10 kg for washers and dryers, 4.5 kg for air conditioners and 5 kg for cooking appliances. Prices come from regional coated-coil price bands, Douglas Insights estimates. Arithmetic: 7.20 million x USD 1,050 = USD 7.56 billion; 2026: USD 7.56 billion x 1.0403 = USD 7.86 billion; 2035: USD 7.56 billion x 1.0403^10 = USD 11.2 billion.

Two cross-checks agree. First, JSW Steel’s 2.42 million tonnes of colour-coated capacity is roughly a third of our world appliance tonnage, consistent with appliance grades being a minority of an Indian coater’s mix next to roofing. Second, China’s 2.62 million tonnes from refrigerators and air conditioners, plus washers and smaller appliances, gives about 3.4 million tonnes, 47% of our total, in line with China’s share of world appliance output. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our editorial standards explain.
