A 100 kWh battery now sits where a diesel tank used to be: the Fendt e100 V Vario stores 100 kWh, delivers 55 kW continuous and 66 kW peak, and refills from 20 to 80 percent in about 45 minutes on an 80 kW CCS charger. Agriculture and forestry equipment batteries are the starter, auxiliary, deep-cycle and traction batteries fitted to tractors, combines, forestry harvesters, forwarders and compact farm machines; the market covers original fit and replacement sales worldwide. Douglas Insights sizes the Agriculture and Forestry Equipment Batteries Market at USD 2.54 billion in 2025, rising to USD 4.45 billion in 2035 at a revenue CAGR of 5.78%. The arithmetic is 21.4 million batteries multiplied by a blended USD 118.6 each, which equals USD 2.54 billion. Tractor volume underpins it: Mahindra reported record domestic sales of 505,930 tractors for FY26 in its 1 April 2026 release, up 24%. The study belongs to our energy storage and batteries coverage, and every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.
Why are tractor battery replacements and electric farm machines lifting battery demand?
Unit growth of 3.1% a year carries the battery market from 21.4 million batteries in 2025 to 29.0 million in 2035. Three forces supply those 3.1 points: an ageing tractor fleet with heavier electrical loads, electric and hybrid machines adding traction packs, and record tractor sales in India and wider Asia.
Fleet electrical load comes first and adds 1.1 points. A modern tractor runs a cab air conditioner, GNSS guidance, ISOBUS implement control and LED work lights, and VARTA describes its Promotive enhanced flooded battery (EFB) agricultural range as built for the highest vibration resistance and reserve for in-cab devices. Douglas Insights estimates that 17.70 million of the 21.4 million batteries sold in 2025, or 82.7%, were replacements rather than original fit. Heavier cycling shortens starter battery life, so each extra kilowatt of parked electrical draw pulls a replacement forward by months. Large-frame tractors and combines now carry two 12-volt batteries more often than a decade ago, which lifts batteries per machine to 1.3 for tractors and 2.0 for combines in our ledger. Telematics modules that stay awake overnight add another small, constant drain.
Electrification adds 1.2 points, the largest single contribution. The Fendt e100 V Vario entered series production at the Marktoberdorf tractor factory from the fourth quarter of 2024, with Germany, Norway and the Netherlands as pilot markets, according to the Fendt product page. A 100 kWh pack priced above USD 25,000 is worth more than 210 starter batteries at our blended price. Douglas Insights counts 0.096 million lithium-ion traction units in 2025, a small number that already carries USD 225.9 million of revenue.
Asian tractor sales add the last 0.8 points. Mahindra sold 505,930 tractors in India in FY26, up from 407,094 in FY25, and exported 20,473 more, per its 1 April 2026 release. Every new tractor leaves the line with at least one 12-volt starter battery, and most Indian tractors return for a replacement within three to four seasons. Exports of 20,473 tractors, up 17%, carry Indian battery fitments into Africa and Southeast Asia as well. Together, 1.1 plus 1.2 plus 0.8 points equal the 3.1-point volume leg.
Price adds a separate 2.6 points a year, as the battery mix shifts from flooded lead-acid at about USD 82.6 a unit toward AGM, EFB and lithium-ion. Short verdict: the mix pays more than the count. In agriculture, a 150 hp tractor battery costs nearly twice a small-tractor unit.
What limits battery spending on tractors, harvesters and forwarders?
Three headwinds remove about 1.2 points of growth from the battery market before 2035: longer-life lead-acid designs, swings in farm income, and lithium-ion pack price deflation. Each one is already netted out of the 3.1% volume and 2.6% price legs in the base case.
Longer life removes 0.3 points. Enhanced flooded and absorbent glass mat (AGM) starter batteries outlast basic flooded units in vibration-heavy field work, so a tractor that once needed a battery every 3.4 years stretches toward 4 years. On a fleet of 31.6 million tractors, half a year of extra life cuts annual replacements by roughly 1.6 million batteries.
Farm income cycles remove 0.4 points. Replacement buying is deferred when grain prices fall, and many growers jump-start an ageing battery for one more season rather than pay USD 120 to USD 180 for a new heavy-duty unit. Forestry contractors behave the same way when timber prices weaken. Batteries wait.
Pack deflation removes 0.5 points from the price leg. Lithium-ion cell prices keep falling, so the revenue per traction pack drops even as kilowatt-hours per machine rise. Douglas Insights expects the average lithium-ion unit price of USD 2,355 to fall in real terms through 2030 before mix effects lift it again.
Which battery chemistry leads: flooded lead-acid, AGM and EFB, or lithium-ion packs?
Flooded lead-acid starter batteries lead with 53.7% of 2025 value, or USD 1.36 billion, because they remain the cheapest 12-volt option for tractors and forestry machines. Lithium-ion traction packs grow fastest at 15.6% a year as electric tractors and compact machines move to series production.
| Battery segment | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | Growth 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flooded lead-acid starter batteries | 53.7% | USD 1.36 billion | 3.1% | USD 1.85 billion |
| AGM and EFB batteries | 27.6% | USD 700.5 million | 6.2% | USD 1.28 billion |
| Deep-cycle batteries for compact and utility machines | 9.8% | USD 248.7 million | 4.0% | USD 368.2 million |
| Lithium-ion traction packs | 8.9% | USD 225.9 million | 15.6% | USD 962.6 million |
Flooded lead-acid starter batteries hold USD 1.36 billion because 16.50 million units sell at about USD 82.6, mostly into replacement bays at tractor dealers and rural battery shops. AGM and EFB batteries take USD 700.5 million from 3.43 million units at about USD 204.0, since premium tractors and combines with start-stop idling and heavy cab loads specify them from the factory. Deep-cycle batteries for compact and utility machines earn USD 248.7 million on 1.37 million units at about USD 181.5, powering side-by-sides, feed carts, electric fencing and sprayer pumps. Lithium-ion traction packs reach USD 225.9 million from only 0.096 million units, because a single pack ranges from a 5 kWh compact module to the 100 kWh Fendt battery.
Lithium-ion traction packs are the fastest-growing segment at 15.6% a year, rising to USD 962.6 million by 2035. Electric tractors, autonomous robots and electric forestry cranes all need traction storage measured in tens of kilowatt-hours, not the 1 to 2 kWh of a starter battery. Readers tracking driverless machines can compare our Autonomous Tractors Market report.
Where are tractor and forestry batteries bought, region by region?
Asia Pacific leads with USD 1.05 billion in 2025, or 41.3% of global battery revenue, because India and China run the largest tractor fleets. Asia Pacific is also the fastest-growing region at 6.6% a year, reaching USD 1.99 billion by 2035.
Asia Pacific grows fastest because agriculture there is still mechanising and tractor sales keep climbing: Mahindra alone sold 505,930 units at home in FY26, and every unit enters the replacement pool within four seasons. Europe holds USD 614.2 million, or 24.2%, and grows at 5.3% to USD 1.03 billion, helped by forestry harvesters in the Nordic countries and the first electric tractors in Germany, Norway and the Netherlands. North America accounts for USD 568.5 million, or 22.4%, and rises at 4.9% to USD 917.3 million on large-frame tractors and combines that carry two batteries each. Latin America contributes USD 210.7 million at 8.3% of the total, expanding at 6.1% to USD 380.8 million as Brazilian grain and sugarcane fleets mechanise. Middle East and Africa is the wildcard at USD 96.4 million and 3.8%, growing 3.67% a year to USD 138.3 million; tractor loans in East Africa could lift it faster than modelled.
Who supplies starter and traction batteries to farm and forestry machinery?
Douglas Insights puts the top-three battery suppliers at about 38.5% of 2025 market value, with Clarios the leader at an estimated 16.2% share. The rest of the battery market is spread across regional lead-acid makers and machine builders that integrate their own lithium-ion packs.
Clarios, through its VARTA brand, sells the Promotive EFB and Promotive Silver ranges for agricultural vehicles, positioned on vibration resistance and starting power. EnerSys reported fiscal 2025 net sales of USD 3.62 billion, including USD 1.48 billion in its Motive Power segment, in its 21 May 2025 results; its farm battery position rests on deep-cycle and motive power know-how. Exide Industries sells a dedicated leak-proof tractor battery range across rural India, where its dealer reach is the moat. John Deere agreed on 14 December 2021 to take majority ownership of Kreisel Electric, an Austrian maker of battery modules and packs with about 160 employees in Rainbach im Muehlkreis, giving Deere in-house traction packs. AGCO, through Fendt, integrates the 100 kWh pack in the e100 V Vario at Marktoberdorf. Mahindra is the largest single buyer of tractor starter batteries in India, with 526,403 tractors sold in FY26 including exports.
| Company | Battery role | Position built on |
|---|---|---|
| Clarios (VARTA) | Starter batteries, EFB | Vibration-rated Promotive range |
| EnerSys | Deep-cycle and motive power | USD 1.48 billion Motive Power segment |
| Exide Industries | Tractor starter batteries | Rural Indian dealer network |
| Kreisel Electric (John Deere) | Traction modules and packs | Captive supply to Deere since 2021 |
| AGCO (Fendt) | Pack integrator | 100 kWh e100 V Vario battery |
| Mahindra | Original fit buyer | 505,930 domestic tractors in FY26 |
Douglas Insights estimates EnerSys and Exide Industries at about 11.6% and 10.7% of 2025 battery value respectively; these shares are our estimates, anchored on disclosed segment revenue where it exists.
How much does a tractor or harvester battery cost per unit in 2025?
A flooded 12-volt tractor starter battery costs about USD 82.6 on average in 2025, while AGM and EFB units average USD 204.0 and lithium-ion units USD 2,355. The blended price across all 21.4 million batteries is USD 118.6, set by the mix more than by list prices.
Realised price bands are wide. Flooded starter batteries for small Asian tractors sell from about USD 55 to USD 110, and heavy-duty flooded units for 150 hp tractors from USD 120 to USD 180. AGM and EFB batteries for combines and forwarders sell between USD 160 and USD 320. Deep-cycle batteries for compact machines range from USD 120 to USD 260. Lithium-ion traction packs span USD 1,500 for a 5 kWh compact module to more than USD 25,000 for a 100 kWh tractor pack. Douglas Insights projects the blended price rising 2.6% a year to USD 153.3 in 2035.
Charging gear is priced separately; see our Industrial Battery Chargers Market report for the charger side.
How does EU battery regulation reach tractor and harvester batteries?
Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, dated 12 July 2023 and in force from 17 August 2023, covers every tractor and forestry machine battery sold in the EU. Starter batteries fall under its starting, lighting or ignition (SLI) category, while larger traction packs count as industrial batteries.
The EU Batteries Regulation defines an SLI battery as one designed to supply electric power for starting, lighting or ignition, including auxiliary or backup use in machinery. Rechargeable industrial batteries above 2 kWh, which includes the 100 kWh tractor pack, must carry a carbon footprint declaration under the regulation. Europe accounts for 24.2% of battery revenue, so these duties touch roughly a quarter of the market.
For battery makers, compliance raises the cost of each traction pack but favours suppliers with traceable lead and lithium supply chains. Lead-acid recycling chains are mature. Lithium packs lag.
Why do forestry harvesters and forwarders wear out batteries faster?
Forestry machines replace batteries about every 2.8 years in our model, against 3.4 years for tractors, because crane hydraulics, cold starts and constant vibration stress every cell. Douglas Insights counts 0.31 million forestry batteries a year from a modelled fleet of 0.43 million machines.
A forestry harvester runs long shifts with heavy electrical loads from the head computer, lighting and cab heating, and many carry two 12-volt batteries in series for a 24-volt system. That doubling is why forestry, with only 0.9% of the machine fleet in our ledger, buys 1.8% of replacement batteries. For battery monitoring on these machines, see the Battery Management System Market report.
How fast are electric tractor battery packs moving from pilot to series production?
Electric tractor battery packs moved to series production in the fourth quarter of 2024 at Fendt, and lithium-ion traction revenue rises from USD 225.9 million in 2025 to USD 962.6 million in 2035. Compact electric machines supply most early pack volume, and their traction batteries outnumber large tractor packs by a wide margin.
Large-frame electric tractors remain rare because a 100 kWh pack gives about 4 to 7 hours of partial-load work, according to Fendt. That suits vineyards, municipal work and livestock yards, not 12-hour tillage. AC charging at 22 kW refills the Fendt battery in about 5 hours. Douglas Insights reckons traction packs will reach 21.6% of battery revenue by 2035, up from 8.9% in 2025.
How far can the farm and forestry battery forecast stretch by 2035?
The base case puts 2035 battery revenue at USD 4.45 billion, the slower case at USD 3.73 billion and the faster case at USD 5.30 billion. The spread comes from tractor sales and the pace of electric machine adoption.
In the base case, volume grows 3.1% and price 2.6%, giving 5.78% revenue growth. The slower case uses 2.0% volume and 1.9% price, a 3.94% path, if farm incomes stall and lead-acid life extends further. The faster case uses 4.3% volume and 3.2% price, a 7.64% path, if electric tractors scale beyond pilot markets. Mahindra’s FY26 record of 505,930 domestic tractors, reported on 1 April 2026, supports the base volume leg.
Add one point to annual battery unit growth and 2035 revenue rises by USD 451.2 million; take one away and it falls by USD 413.4 million. Published forecasts for farm equipment batteries run from about 6.2% to 12.3% a year. Our 5.78% sits below that band because we price lithium-ion deflation explicitly. We stay cautious.
Douglas Exclusive: the Farm and Forestry Battery Replacement Ledger
The Farm and Forestry Battery Replacement Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 14 inputs that counts 21.4 million batteries a year. Those inputs are 4 machine fleet sizes, 4 batteries-per-machine ratios, 4 replacement intervals, one original fit volume and one sourced FY26 tractor sales figure. It counts how many batteries the installed base consumes each year.
| Machine class | Modelled fleet (million) | Batteries per machine | Replacement interval (years) | Batteries a year (million) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tractors in service | 31.6 | 1.3 | 3.4 | 12.08 |
| Combines and self-propelled harvesters | 1.9 | 2.0 | 3.2 | 1.19 |
| Forestry harvesters, forwarders and skidders | 0.43 | 2.0 | 2.8 | 0.31 |
| Compact, utility and side-by-side farm machines | 13.2 | 1.0 | 3.2 | 4.12 |
| Original fit on new machines | n/a | n/a | n/a | 3.70 |
The ledger finds that replacement drives the battery market: 17.70 million of 21.4 million units, or 82.7%, go into machines already working. Tractors alone consume 12.08 million replacement batteries. Replacement rules. The finding matters for suppliers: dealer and aftermarket reach decides share more than factory contracts do. Fleet sizes and intervals are our modelled assumptions, not an official register.
How the model reaches 21.4 million farm and forestry batteries and USD 2.54 billion?
The model multiplies 21.4 million batteries by USD 118.6 to reach USD 2.54 billion, across 5 regions, 4 battery segments and 4 machine classes. Each segment is units times its own price, and the four segment values sum exactly to the total.
Segment receipts: 16.50 million flooded units at USD 82.6, 3.43 million AGM and EFB units at USD 204.0, 1.37 million deep-cycle units at USD 181.5 and 0.096 million lithium-ion units at USD 2,355. The model uses 23 data points, including 6 primary-source documents. Cross-check one: the ledger total of 21.40 million matches the unit build exactly. Cross-check two: segment 2035 values sum to USD 4.46 billion against the USD 4.45 billion top line, a 0.15% gap. Cross-check three: regional rows sum to the global total in 2025 and 2035 within USD 0.1 million.
How long does a tractor starter battery last in field duty?
A tractor starter battery lasts about 3.4 years in our model, and AGM or EFB units stretch that toward 4 years. At 31.6 million tractors with 1.3 batteries each, the interval sets 12.08 million replacements a year.
Heat, deep discharge and vibration are the usual causes of failure in agriculture and forestry work. A tractor parked with GNSS receivers powered drains the battery in weeks. Shorter intervals in hot climates explain why Asia Pacific replaces faster than Europe. Heat kills batteries. Fleet managers who log battery voltage can extend life by 6 to 12 months.
