On 10 February 2025 Saint-Gobain completed its acquisition of Fosroc, a construction chemicals maker with expected 2024 revenue of USD 487 million, lifting the group’s construction chemicals sales to about EUR 6.5 billion across 76 countries and putting the world’s largest plasterboard producer in charge of one of the widest ranges of set-control additives. The plaster accelerator is the small, cheap additive that decides how fast a gypsum or cement plaster sets, and on a wallboard line it decides how fast the whole plant runs. Douglas Insights values the plaster accelerator market at USD 351 million in 2025, USD 351.3 million before rounding, and forecasts USD 598 million by 2035, a compound growth rate of 5.46% a year. The receipt is about 548,000 tonnes of accelerator sold or made in 2025 at an average USD 641 per tonne. The volume leg adds 3.6% a year as board lines, machine plasters and cement renders spread in Asia, the Gulf and Africa, and the price leg adds 1.8% a year as buyers move from plain ground gypsum toward coated, heat-resistant and liquid systems. The study sits within Douglas Insights coverage of construction materials and follows the published Douglas Insights research methodology.

What counts as a plaster setting additive, from wallboard lines to dental casts?

The plaster accelerator market covers about 548,000 tonnes a year of additives that shorten the setting time of calcium sulfate and cement plasters, worth USD 351 million in 2025. A plaster accelerator works by seeding crystal growth: fine gypsum dihydrate particles or dissolved sulfate ions give the hemihydrate somewhere to start crystallising, so a slurry that would set in 25 minutes sets in 3 to 8 minutes.

The plaster accelerator study splits value by chemistry into Ground gypsum accelerators, Potassium sulfate accelerators, Calcium formate and nitrate accelerators, Aluminum and zinc sulfate accelerators, Heat-resistant coated accelerators, and Liquid and blended accelerator systems. It splits volume by application into Gypsum wallboard manufacturing, Gypsum hand and machine plasters, Cement-based renders and plasters, Gypsum floor screeds, and Dental, casting and mould plasters, and by form into Powder accelerators and Liquid accelerators. Concrete admixtures, shotcrete accelerators, retarders, foaming agents and the gypsum itself are excluded. Ground gypsum made inside a board plant is counted at a merchant-equivalent value, because it is a real input the plant would otherwise buy. The binder that cement-based renders rely on is sized in the Cement Market report.

What did Saint-Gobain’s February 2025 purchase of Fosroc change for set-control suppliers?

The Fosroc deal closed on 10 February 2025 and added 20 plants to Saint-Gobain. Announced on 27 June 2024, it brought about 3,000 staff and made a plasterboard maker the largest single seller of plaster accelerator chemistry outside its own board plants. Saint-Gobain had already bought Chryso and GCP, and Fosroc had grown about 11% a year since 2021 with a strong base in India, the Middle East and Asia Pacific, the regions that lead growth in this report.

For plaster accelerator buyers the deal matters in two ways. Independent plaster and render makers in the Gulf and India now buy set-control additives from a group that also competes with them in finished plaster, and several have moved part of their volume to Sika, Perstorp and regional sulfate suppliers. Douglas Insights treats the February 2025 closing as the start of a shift toward branded systems, and the thread runs through the drivers, players and 2035 outlook below.

What drives plaster accelerator consumption on board lines and plaster sites?

Four forces lift plaster accelerator volume by 3.6% a year, and new gypsum board capacity is the largest. The US Geological Survey puts world gypsum output at about 160 million tonnes in 2025, and US wallboard sales alone reached 26 billion square feet, according to USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. A 12.5 millimetre board uses about 8 to 9 kilograms of stucco per square metre and 25 to 60 grams of plaster accelerator, so each new 30 million square metre line in India, Vietnam or Saudi Arabia adds roughly 900 to 1,500 tonnes of accelerator a year. Douglas Insights estimates board capacity growth adds about 1.6 points a year to plaster accelerator volume.

Machine-applied gypsum plaster is the second driver. Spray plaster replaces hand-mixed sand and cement render on interior walls in India, Turkey, the Gulf and Eastern Europe because one crew covers 250 to 350 square metres a day instead of about 60. Every bag of machine plaster carries a plaster accelerator and a retarder in a tight balance, and dosing rises as contractors ask for faster recoat times. Douglas Insights estimates machine plaster adds about 0.9 points a year to plaster accelerator volume.

Faster board lines are the third driver. Plants in Europe and North America now run at 150 to 200 metres a minute, against about 100 metres a minute two decades ago, and every extra metre a minute needs a slightly faster set at the knife. Higher line speed pushes plants from plain ground gypsum toward heat-resistant coated accelerators that survive the hot stucco, and Douglas Insights estimates line-speed upgrades add about 0.6 points a year to plaster accelerator volume and most of the 1.8% price leg.

Cold-weather and fast-track rendering is the fourth driver. Calcium formate and calcium nitrate let cement-based renders set below 5 degrees Celsius and let contractors apply a second coat the same day, which matters as builders in China, Central Europe and North America compress schedules. Douglas Insights estimates cement render work adds about 0.5 points a year to plaster accelerator volume. Together the four drivers take plaster accelerator volume from about 548,000 tonnes in 2025 to about 781,000 tonnes in 2035.

What holds back plaster accelerator growth?

Three restraints hold plaster accelerator growth to 5.46% a year, and weak housing in the richest markets is the first. USGS data show US housing starts fell about 6% in the year through August 2025 and US crude gypsum output fell 4% from 2024, and Europe’s residential building permits have stayed below their 2021 level. Douglas Insights removes about 0.7 points a year from plaster accelerator volume growth for slow new-build work in North America and Europe.

Lower dosing is the second restraint. Board plants now grind their own accelerator finer and coat it better, so a modern line may need 30% less plaster accelerator per square metre than it did in 2010, and process control software trims overdosing further. Douglas Insights removes about 0.4 points a year for dosing efficiency.

Substitution of wet trades is the third restraint. Drylining with board in place of plaster in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and parts of Asia removes hand-plaster volume even as it adds board volume, and board uses less plaster accelerator per square metre of finished wall than a two-coat plaster. Douglas Insights removes about 0.3 points a year from plaster accelerator volume for this switch.

Which chemistry carries the value in plaster set control?

Ground gypsum accelerators carry the most plaster accelerator value at 31.4% of 2025 revenue, USD 110 million, while Liquid and blended accelerator systems grow fastest at 8.41% a year.

Plaster accelerator chemistry 2025 value Share 2035 value CAGR 2026-2035
Ground gypsum accelerators USD 110 million 31.4% USD 173 million 4.61%
Potassium sulfate accelerators USD 76.2 million 21.7% USD 123 million 4.90%
Calcium formate and nitrate accelerators USD 62.9 million 17.9% USD 116 million 6.31%
Aluminum and zinc sulfate accelerators USD 44.3 million 12.6% USD 66.9 million 4.21%
Heat-resistant coated accelerators USD 34.4 million 9.8% USD 67.1 million 6.91%
Liquid and blended accelerator systems USD 23.2 million 6.6% USD 52.0 million 8.41%

Ground gypsum accelerators are worth USD 110 million in 2025. Board plants ball-mill gypsum with sugar or starch to create billions of seed crystals, and almost every wallboard line in the world runs on this plaster accelerator, much of it made on site.

Potassium sulfate accelerators are worth USD 76.2 million in 2025. Potassium sulfate is cheap, dissolves fast and works in both board and bagged plaster, which is why it remains the standard soluble plaster accelerator in Asia and Latin America.

Calcium formate and nitrate accelerators are worth USD 62.9 million in 2025. Cement-based renders, tile adhesives and cold-weather plasters use them because they speed cement hydration without the chloride that corrodes steel lath.

Aluminum and zinc sulfate accelerators are worth USD 44.3 million in 2025. Their sharp, strong effect suits casting plasters and fast-setting patching compounds, though dosing must be tight because overdosing weakens the set plaster.

Heat-resistant coated accelerators are worth USD 34.4 million in 2025 and grow 6.91% a year. Coated grades keep their seeding power in hot stucco, so high-speed board lines in Europe, North America and Japan pay a premium for them.

Liquid and blended accelerator systems are worth USD 23.2 million in 2025 and grow fastest at 8.41% a year to USD 52.0 million by 2035. Automated dosing on new board lines and ready-mixed machine plasters prefers pumpable plaster accelerator that meters precisely, and formulated packages carry the highest margins.

How do wallboard, plaster and render applications split the tonnage?

Gypsum wallboard manufacturing takes about 46% of plaster accelerator tonnage in 2025, some 252,000 tonnes, because every square metre of board carries seed crystals. Gypsum hand and machine plasters take about 24%, some 132,000 tonnes, led by bagged spray plaster in India, Turkey and the Gulf. Cement-based renders and plasters take about 18%, some 99,000 tonnes, mostly calcium formate in China and Europe. Gypsum floor screeds take about 7%, some 38,000 tonnes, as anhydrite and alpha-hemihydrate self-levelling floors spread in Germany and France. Dental, casting and mould plasters take about 5%, some 27,000 tonnes, but carry the highest value per tonne because dental stone and ceramic mould plaster need exact setting times.

How do powder and liquid forms split the value?

Powder accelerators take about 88% of 2025 plaster accelerator value, some USD 309 million, because board plants and bag plasters dose dry. Liquid accelerators take about 12%, some USD 42.2 million, and gain about 4 points of share by 2035 as new lines adopt closed-loop pumped dosing.

Which region buys the most plaster setting additive?

Asia Pacific consumes the most plaster accelerator, USD 145 million in 2025 or 41.3% of the total, growing 6.32% a year to USD 268 million by 2035. China holds the largest board base through China National Building Material and its Beijing New Building Materials unit, India adds new board and spray plaster plants each year, and Vietnam and Indonesia build new lines.

North America takes USD 79.4 million in 2025 and grows 4.22% a year to USD 120 million, held back by slower housing starts but supported by high-speed lines that pay for heat-resistant grades. Europe takes USD 75.2 million and grows 3.91% a year to USD 110 million, the slowest region, as weak new-build work offsets renovation under the EU building energy rules. Latin America takes USD 20.4 million in 2025 and grows 5.90% a year to USD 36.2 million, led by Brazil and Mexico, where drywall is replacing block and render in commercial buildings.

The Middle East and Africa is the fastest-growing region for plaster accelerator at 7.41% a year, from USD 31.3 million in 2025 to USD 64.0 million by 2035. Saudi Arabia’s giga-projects, new board plants in Egypt and the Gulf, and cheap local gypsum from Oman and Iran make machine plaster and board the default wall systems, and Fosroc’s Gulf base puts Saint-Gobain close to that growth.

Which companies make plaster setting additives, and how concentrated is supply?

Douglas Insights estimates the Saint-Gobain group holds about 14.2% of 2025 plaster accelerator value, counting its Placo board plants and its construction chemicals arm, and the top five groups hold about 45.7%.

Company Plaster accelerator strength Est. 2025 share
Saint-Gobain (Placo, Chryso, GCP, Fosroc) Captive ground gypsum in board plants plus merchant set-control packages after the February 2025 Fosroc closing 14.2%
Knauf (including USG) Captive accelerator for the largest board network in Europe and North America 12.6%
China National Building Material (BNBM) Captive accelerator for the world’s largest board capacity 9.8%
Etex (Siniat) Board and plaster plants in Europe and Latin America 4.7%
Sika Merchant accelerators and additives for renders, mortars and plasters after the MBCC integration 4.4%
Perstorp, Lanxess, Yara, Tessenderlo, Compass Minerals and regional suppliers Calcium formate, calcium nitrate and potassium sulfate sold to plaster and render makers 54.3%

Advantage in plaster accelerator rests on grinding and coating know-how, a laboratory that tunes set time to each gypsum source, and bulk logistics near the plant. Board makers keep ground gypsum in-house because it is critical to line speed, while merchant chemical makers such as Perstorp and Lanxess compete on calcium formate purity and Tessenderlo and Compass Minerals on potassium sulfate supply.

What price does a tonne of plaster setting additive fetch in 2025?

A tonne of plaster accelerator sold for an average USD 641 in 2025, and Douglas Insights expects about USD 766 by 2035. Potassium sulfate sells for about USD 500 to USD 700 a tonne, technical calcium formate for USD 700 to USD 950, merchant ground gypsum for USD 250 to USD 450, and coated heat-resistant grades for USD 1,100 to USD 1,600. Dental and casting grades can exceed USD 3,000 a tonne. The USGS puts calcined gypsum at about USD 62 a tonne at the plant, so a plaster accelerator costs about ten times the stucco it treats. The average plaster accelerator price rises 1.8% a year as buyers shift toward coated and liquid systems.

How does synthetic gypsum from coal plants change dosing on board lines?

Synthetic gypsum made up about 39% of US gypsum supply in 2025, according to the USGS, and its purity and particle shape change how much plaster accelerator a board line needs. Flue gas desulfurisation gypsum is purer than most natural rock but arrives wet and with fine, uniform crystals, so plants tune accelerator dose every time the source changes. As coal plants close in the United States and Europe, board makers switch back to natural rock or to imported gypsum from Spain, Oman and Mexico, and each switch means new trials and often a stronger plaster accelerator package. Douglas Insights estimates source switching adds about 0.2 points a year to plaster accelerator price growth in North America and Europe.

Could plaster setting additive sales reach USD 768 million by 2035?

Plaster accelerator sales reach USD 768 million by 2035 only in the faster outlook; the base case is USD 598 million inside a range of USD 450 million to USD 768 million. The slower outlook assumes housing stays weak in North America and Europe, Gulf projects are delayed and board makers trim dosing further, setting the legs at 1.6% for volume and 0.9% for price for USD 450 million. The faster outlook assumes Indian and Southeast Asian board capacity doubles, Saint-Gobain and Sika push formulated packages after the Fosroc closing, and liquid dosing spreads, setting the legs at 5.4% and 2.6% for USD 768 million. Each 1-point change in volume growth moves the 2035 plaster accelerator figure by about USD 60.3 million. Published growth estimates for plaster accelerator range from about 4.4% to 6.8% a year, and the Douglas Insights figure sits in the middle because it counts captive ground gypsum at merchant value.

Which laws on construction products and workplace dust govern plaster setting additives?

Three sets of laws shape plaster accelerator use, and the EU Construction Products Regulation is the newest. Regulation (EU) 2024/3110 of 27 November 2024 replaces Regulation (EU) No 305/2011 and adds environmental declarations for construction products, which pushes plaster and board makers to document every additive, plaster accelerator included. EU REACH registration covers potassium sulfate, calcium formate and aluminum sulfate, and the United States regulates respirable crystalline silica exposure at 50 micrograms per cubic metre, which shapes how plants handle accelerator powders ground with gypsum.

Douglas Exclusive: the wallboard accelerator dosing map

The wallboard accelerator dosing map records plaster accelerator dose, chemistry and line speed for 186 gypsum board lines in 31 countries, about 58% of world board capacity. Lines running above 150 metres a minute use about 42 grams of accelerator per square metre on average against 31 grams on slower lines, and 64% of lines built since 2020 run coated or liquid grades. Related coverage sits in the Cement Market, Facade Market and Extruded Polystyrene Insulation Materials Market reports.
