On 5 January 2026 Ingevity completed the sale of its North Charleston crude tall oil refinery and most of its Industrial Specialties product line to Mainstream Pine Products for USD 110 million at closing, according to the Ingevity investor release, moving one of North America’s largest sources of tall oil rosin to a new owner. Douglas Insights values the rosin resin air entraining agent market at USD 386 million in 2025, exactly USD 386.3 million, and forecasts USD 664 million by 2035, a compound growth rate of 5.57% a year. The receipt is units times price: about 175,600 tonnes of rosin-based air entraining admixture sold in 2025 at an average USD 2.20 per kilogram. The volume leg adds 3.6% a year as highway, airfield and dam concrete in cold and wet climates needs entrained air, and the price leg adds 1.9% a year as pine chemical costs rise and blends move upmarket. The study sits within Douglas Insights coverage of construction materials and follows the published Douglas Insights research methodology.
What is a rosin resin air entraining agent, and which products does this study leave out?
A rosin resin air entraining agent is a concrete admixture made from pine rosin that creates billions of tiny, stable air bubbles in fresh concrete so that the hardened concrete survives freezing and thawing, and Douglas Insights counts 175,600 tonnes of it sold in 2025. The rosin resin air entraining agent model covers five chemistries: Gum rosin soaps; Tall oil rosin soaps; Wood rosin resins; Modified and saponified rosin blends; and Rosin and synthetic surfactant hybrids.
The rosin resin air entraining agent study also splits revenue by form into Liquid solutions and Powders, and by application into Ready-mix concrete, Precast concrete, Road and airfield pavements, Dams and marine structures, and Mortar and masonry. Fully synthetic air entraining agents based on alkyl sulfonates or fatty acid soaps without rosin, foaming agents for cellular concrete, and defoamers are excluded. Neighbouring products are sized in the Plaster Accelerator Market and Cement Market reports.
What did Ingevity’s 5 January 2026 refinery sale mean for rosin resin air entraining agent supply?
The Ingevity sale moved a business with about USD 130 million of 2025 revenue to a new owner, and Douglas Insights estimates that tall oil rosin from North American refineries fed about 31% of North American rosin resin air entraining agent output in 2025. Ingevity announced the deal on 4 September 2025 and said the assets earned low to mid single digit EBITDA margins.
For rosin resin air entraining agent formulators the sale raised two questions: whether Mainstream Pine Products keeps running the refinery at the same rate, and whether tall oil rosin prices rise as the new owner seeks better margins. Douglas Insights assumes a 4% to 6% rise in North American tall oil rosin contract prices for 2026, which adds about 0.3 points to the global price leg in that year. The deal also shows a longer trend: crude tall oil supply depends on kraft pulp mills, and every mill closure in the US South removes rosin feedstock for air entraining agents.
What drives rosin resin air entraining agent use in freeze-thaw concrete?
Four forces add about 3.6% a year to rosin resin air entraining agent volume, and highway and bridge spending comes first. Concrete pavements, bridge decks and barriers in freezing climates must carry 4% to 8% entrained air, and most transport agencies specify it by exposure class. Airfield aprons and runways in Canada, Scandinavia and northern China face de-icing chemicals as well as frost, which raises the specified air content by about 1 point. Douglas Insights estimates road and airfield pavements used about 27% of 2025 rosin resin air entraining agent tonnage, and that highway programmes in the United States, China, India and Canada add about 1.2 points a year to volume through 2030.
Ready-mix growth in Asia is the second driver. China’s northern provinces, Inner Mongolia and the Tibetan plateau, along with Kazakhstan, Mongolia and northern India, all pour concrete that sees dozens of freeze-thaw cycles a year. Douglas Insights estimates Asia Pacific ready-mix producers bought about 78,000 tonnes of rosin resin air entraining agent in 2025, and that rising ready-mix penetration, which replaces site-mixed concrete with dosed admixtures, adds about 1.1 points a year to global volume.
Dams, water and marine works are the third driver. Mass concrete for dams, spillways, canals and harbour walls uses entrained air to improve workability and durability under wetting and drying, often at air contents of 3% to 5%, and a large dam can take 2 million cubic metres of concrete. Douglas Insights estimates Dams and marine structures took about 12% of 2025 rosin resin air entraining agent tonnage, and that hydropower and water storage projects in China, India, Ethiopia and Pakistan add about 0.6 points a year to volume.
Lower-carbon cement is the fourth driver. Concrete made with fly ash, slag or calcined clay needs a higher air entraining agent dose, because unburned carbon in fly ash and the fine particles of calcined clay absorb the admixture and destroy bubbles. Douglas Insights estimates each 10-point rise in supplementary cementitious material share raises the average air entraining agent dose by about 12%, and that the shift to blended cements adds about 0.7 points a year to rosin resin air entraining agent volume through 2035.
What holds back rosin resin air entraining agent volumes against synthetic surfactants?
Three restraints keep rosin resin air entraining agent volume at 3.6% a year, and synthetic competition is the first. Alkyl sulfonate and alkyl ether sulfate air entraining agents cost 10% to 25% less per effective dose in large plants. Douglas Insights estimates rosin chemistries held about 38% of global air entraining agent tonnage in 2025, down from about 46% in 2015, and removes about 0.6 points a year from rosin resin air entraining agent volume for this loss of share.
Feedstock volatility is the second restraint. Gum rosin from tapped pine trees in China, Indonesia and Brazil swings in price with harvest labour and weather, and Chinese gum rosin moved between about USD 1,500 and USD 2,600 per tonne between 2020 and 2025. Douglas Insights estimates that each USD 300 per tonne rise in gum rosin lifts gum rosin soap production cost by about 9%.
Weak construction in Europe and China is the third restraint. Chinese housing starts fell by more than half between 2021 and 2025, and European cement volumes stayed below their 2021 level. Douglas Insights removes about 0.4 points a year from rosin resin air entraining agent volume through 2028 for this slump.
Which rosin resin air entraining agent chemistry carries the value?
Gum rosin soaps carry the most rosin resin air entraining agent value at 29.5% of 2025 revenue, USD 114 million. Rosin and synthetic surfactant hybrids grow fastest, at 7.84% a year.
| Rosin resin air entraining agent chemistry | 2025 value | Share | 2035 value | CAGR 2026-2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gum rosin soaps | USD 114 million | 29.5% | USD 202 million | 5.9% |
| Tall oil rosin soaps | USD 100 million | 26.0% | USD 158 million | 4.6% |
| Wood rosin resins | USD 83.1 million | 21.5% | USD 124 million | 4.1% |
| Modified and saponified rosin blends | USD 48.3 million | 12.5% | USD 94.1 million | 6.9% |
| Rosin and synthetic surfactant hybrids | USD 40.6 million | 10.5% | USD 86.3 million | 7.84% |
Gum rosin soaps are worth USD 114 million in 2025. Gum rosin soaps lead because China, the largest user, makes them from its own tapped pine rosin, and because they are cheap to produce at about USD 1.60 to USD 2.20 per kilogram.
Tall oil rosin soaps are worth USD 100 million in 2025. Tall oil rosin soaps come from the rosin fraction of crude tall oil, a by-product of kraft pulp mills in the United States and Scandinavia, and grow 4.6% a year, held back by pulp mill closures.
Wood rosin resins are worth USD 83.1 million in 2025. Wood rosin resins, extracted from aged pine stumps and sold in the United States as neutralised Vinsol-type resin, grow 4.1% a year because many state transport agencies still list them on approved products lists, but stump supply is finite.
Modified and saponified rosin blends are worth USD 48.3 million in 2025. Modified and saponified rosin blends, which add stabilisers to rosin soap for use with fly ash and slag cements, grow 6.9% a year as blended cements spread.
Rosin and synthetic surfactant hybrids are worth USD 40.6 million in 2025 and grow fastest, at 7.84% a year to USD 86.3 million by 2035, because they pair the stable bubble shell of rosin with the consistency of synthetic surfactants and work well with polycarboxylate superplasticisers.
How do form and application split rosin resin air entraining agent revenue?
By form, Douglas Insights estimates Liquid solutions take about 81% of 2025 rosin resin air entraining agent revenue and Powders about 19%, mainly for dry-mix mortars and bagged products. By application, Ready-mix concrete takes about 38%, Road and airfield pavements about 27%, Precast concrete about 14%, Dams and marine structures about 12%, and Mortar and masonry about 9%.
Which region uses the most rosin resin air entraining agent, and which grows fastest?
Asia Pacific is the largest rosin resin air entraining agent region at USD 172 million in 2025, 44.6% of the total, and it also grows fastest, at 6.85% a year to USD 334 million by 2035. China makes and uses most of the world’s gum rosin soap, and northern Chinese highways, high-speed rail viaducts and water projects need entrained air. India adds volume as the national highway programme pushes into Himalayan states.
North America uses USD 91.9 million of rosin resin air entraining agent in 2025 and grows 4.2% a year to USD 139 million. Freeze-thaw exposure classes cover most of Canada and the northern United States, where wood rosin and tall oil rosin soaps are long established.
Europe uses USD 73.0 million of rosin resin air entraining agent in 2025 and grows 3.85% a year to USD 107 million, the slowest region, because synthetic surfactants have taken more share in Germany, France and the United Kingdom.
Latin America uses USD 27.4 million of rosin resin air entraining agent in 2025 and grows 5.8% a year to USD 48.2 million, supported by Brazil’s own gum rosin supply and Andean hydropower dams. The Middle East and Africa is the wildcard at USD 21.6 million in 2025 and 5.37% a year to USD 36.5 million, where entrained air is used less for frost than for workability in dams, canals and marine structures.
Which companies supply rosin resin air entraining agent to concrete producers?
Douglas Insights estimates Sika holds about 12.4% of 2025 rosin resin air entraining agent revenue, and the top three suppliers hold about 30.2%.
| Company | Rosin resin air entraining agent strength | Est. 2025 share |
|---|---|---|
| Sika | Global admixture range, enlarged by the MBCC Group purchase in 2023 | 12.4% |
| Saint-Gobain (Chryso, GCP, Fosroc) | Admixtures for ready-mix and precast in over 70 countries | 11.1% |
| Master Builders Solutions | Air entraining agents for pavements and infrastructure | 6.7% |
| Mapei | Admixtures and dry-mix mortar additives | 4.3% |
| Pinova | Wood rosin resin for air entraining admixtures | 3.6% |
| Chinese gum rosin soap makers, Harima, Arakawa, Kraton, Mainstream Pine Products and regional formulators | Rosin feedstock, rosin soaps and local blends | 61.9% |
Advantage in rosin resin air entraining agent supply rests on feedstock access, approved product listings with transport agencies and technical service at the batch plant. Sika completed its purchase of MBCC Group in May 2023, according to its media release, adding a business with CHF 2.1 billion of 2022 sales, and had to sell MBCC admixture assets in several Western markets to win approval; those assets now trade as Master Builders Solutions. Rosin producers such as Kraton and the new owner of the Ingevity refinery sell feedstock to formulators.
What price per kilogram does a rosin resin air entraining agent fetch?
Rosin resin air entraining agent sold at an average USD 2.20 per kilogram in 2025, and Douglas Insights expects the average to reach about USD 2.66 by 2035. Chinese gum rosin soap solutions sell for USD 1.20 to USD 2.00 per kilogram, tall oil rosin soap solutions for USD 1.80 to USD 2.60, neutralised wood rosin resin for USD 3.00 to USD 4.50, and hybrid and stabilised blends for USD 2.80 to USD 4.20. At a dose of 30 to 130 millilitres per 100 kilograms of cement, a rosin resin air entraining agent adds only about USD 0.05 to USD 0.30 to the cost of a cubic metre of concrete. The rosin resin air entraining agent price rises 1.9% a year as pine feedstock tightens and the mix moves toward hybrids.
Which specifications and laws govern rosin resin air entraining agent sales?
Almost every rosin resin air entraining agent is sold against a written specification, and Douglas Insights estimates about 88% of 2025 rosin resin air entraining agent revenue came from products tested to ASTM C260 or EN 934-2. In North America, ASTM C260/C260M-24, the standard specification for air-entraining admixtures for concrete, sets limits on setting time, compressive and flexural strength and length change. In the European Union, admixtures carry CE marking under Regulation (EU) No 305/2011 on construction products, with EN 934-2 as the harmonised test method, and EN 206 sets the minimum air content for exposure classes XF2 to XF4. China applies GB 8076 to concrete admixtures, and India applies IS 9103.
How many air bubbles does a rosin resin air entraining agent create, and what dose keeps them stable?
A rosin resin air entraining agent creates hundreds of billions of bubbles per cubic metre of concrete, most of them 10 to 300 micrometres across, and Douglas Insights estimates about 72% of 2025 rosin resin air entraining agent tonnage was dosed to hit a 5% to 7% air target. Frost resistance depends less on total air than on bubble spacing: a spacing factor below about 0.20 millimetres protects the paste from ice pressure. Rosin soaps form a tough, charged film around each bubble, which is why they keep bubbles stable during long haul times and pumping better than many synthetics.
How wide is the 2035 spread for rosin resin air entraining agent revenue?
The base case takes the rosin resin air entraining agent market to USD 664 million by 2035, inside a range of USD 515 million to USD 838 million. The slower case assumes synthetic surfactants keep taking share and pulp mill closures cut tall oil rosin supply after the Ingevity refinery sale, setting the volume leg at 2.1% and the price leg at 0.8% for USD 515 million. The faster case assumes highway and dam budgets in Asia and North America stay high, blended cements lift the average dose, and hybrid blends win back share from synthetics; it sets the legs at 5.0% and 2.9% for USD 838 million. Each 1-point change in the volume leg moves the 2035 rosin resin air entraining agent figure by about USD 67.0 million. Published growth estimates for the rosin resin air entraining agent market run from about 4.3% to 7.2% a year, and the Douglas Insights figure of 5.57% sits inside that range, near the midpoint.
Douglas Exclusive: the rosin resin air entraining agent pine feedstock ledger
The pine feedstock ledger traces 84% of 2025 rosin resin air entraining agent tonnage back to its rosin source, covering 19 gum rosin tapping regions, 23 crude tall oil refineries and 3 wood rosin extraction plants. The ledger shows that China and Indonesia supplied about 58% of the gum rosin behind air entraining agents, that 11 tall oil refineries in the United States and Northern Europe supplied most tall oil rosin, and that a single refinery sale such as Ingevity’s can move 5% to 8% of regional tall oil rosin supply. Douglas Insights uses the ledger to test how far each rosin resin air entraining agent chemistry is exposed to a feedstock shock.
